  • I can't continue using single wall tents anymore because I'm sick of the level of condensation build up with the tents.
It's not only the tent that gets wet with the condensation it's my sleeping bags, sleeping mats and clothes.

Hi Dan, I personally have got on with single wall tents, yes you do get some condensation but for me it's not been a huge problem. I used to have a 3ful 1 person tent but it got torn with some wind so at the moment I'm using a tarp.

I have a Taga 2 and it's a fantastic tent. For the money it is about the lightest tent in its class. I've used it in the height of summer and remained cool. Camped in storms and it's been perfectly waterproof.
Of course there is condensation, but I pitch late and leave early. I also have the door open until I'm ready to sleep, so in the morning what little condensation there is mostly drys out in the time it takes to make and eat breakfast, and a quick wipe with a microfibre drys up any excess moisture.
For hiking and wildcamping a bit of moisture management is a small price to pay when the equivalent double skin (Naturehike) tent is almost 1kg heavier

My 'go-to' is my Helsdon Hammock tent with a tarp over the top to make a nice vestibule. Failing that just a tarp and if conditions require it, I add a mozzie net. Condensation is very rare in my neck of Australia but I can imagine it would be a pain. You are spot on to point out not everyone has the problem. Shows how international your channel has become and how we need to operate to local conditions. Were I to come to the UK I would be taking my direction from someone like you with reliable local knowledge. When I camped in the US you can bet your life I took solid advice regarding bears and cooking in camp! We don't have that problem Downunder, either.

  • @thetattooedangler
    @thetattooedangler ปีที่แล้ว +4

Might I suggest that instead of doing a give away, you sell the tents and donate the proceedings to your local mountain rescue team? With wild, stealth and ultralite camping becoming more popular, especially with inexperienced creators on YT, the emergency services are being stretched more than ever. A few extra quid would be very welcome in the summer months.

I agree totally, also when windy, it rains inside. There's a dew point, when it gets to that temp, water in the atmosphere condenses into water. I got soaked once in a hammock, water condensed on everything except my skin. 2 walled tent for me unless in a hammock.

MSR Hubba NX is good for coping with condensation. I’ve heard burning a small UCO candle lantern at night drives off the moisture too.

Dan, I have a Lightwave Sigma, a single walled tent made of a special, carbon impregnated, breathable fabric, which allows condensation to pass out through the tent walls. It's not a cheap option, but pretty good and very light.

I avoided them for a while. Then I picked up a Vik 1 and took it out in really damp conditions. It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. I love the tent. For the next time I go out in damp conditions, I'll try out the 3FUL tyvek quilt/bag protector to see if it'll help with my quilt getting soaked. The UCO candle lantern helped burn off the humidity in the tent when I was cooking in it. I keep a microfiber cloth nearby to wipe down the walls.

Even using upper-end tents with rain flies, I had condensation problems while camping in the Northeastern United States. We did multi-day camps, often in damp or wet weather. It was not always possible to dry bedding each day. Too often, wind and wet combined to press the fly and the tent wall together, blocking evaporative air flow.

Truth is my go to tent is the phoxx 2v2 i bought a new one last month and now the fly sheet is joined to the inner, so no more problems pitching up the tent in the rain and where the poles sit in they have added some adjusters that you can slacken off to get your poles in easier and then tighten up, they've made a great tent even better.

I think the problem is a single-wall tent with a sewn-in groundsheet. My MLD Duomid if floorless. It suffers from condensation but generally it rolls down the steep walls and drips harmlessly to the ground. If it's windy I will get some condensation spray but then I use a bivvy bag. On a quiet night I have a one-person bathtub groundsheet which stops my pad sliding around in the night, meaning my sleeping bag rarely touches the tent walls. If I'm concerned about that I put the toe of my bag into my rain jacket to protect the bag.

I doubt it would do you Dan, filming and comfort wise. but a snugpak Ionisphere ticks most box's for me.
the flysheet is tiny, which means less surface area for condensation to latch onto.
its pretty long so footbox of sleeping bag is in no danger of rubbing against the tent walls. its low profile, stealthy.
    but that means uncomfortable.
you just can't have all ways I suppose.

The only way to avoid condensation in a tent overnight is airflow so if your scared of the dark and need all the doors and window vents closed, then your stuffed, I always leave a door open or at the very least, in the coldest weather a door unzipped. So I'll happily take one of your single walled tents as IMHO there ideal for 3 season UK camping

I’ve found out that our hot tents from one tigress that is the first one that I sore you use is only 1.9kg. So I was thinking if we leave the pole out and use a trekking pole or cut a piece of wood that would take the weight down a bit and make it easier to back the tent in your pack. What do you think 👍👍👍👍

I have used single walled 50 years ago. Try putting a tarpaulin over the top might help.
Condensation happens mostly due to the outside temperature, being different from internal temperatures. Its usually colder outside than in the tent. We createte this as we breath it clings tothe tent fabric and forms water or a mist condenstion.
    Hope that helps.

A tent that is waterproof, has no condensation, has two doors, has Y2K zippers and has a colour that blends with the surroundings in the woods is perfect.

@@englishwoodsman I dare say your right, but i have seen others put up tarps above there tents to provide a outside area to cook ect & or have a small fire as well, seems handy if its rainy, but as you say condensation is the problem. Even so hang on to the best of them & dont throw the baby out with the bathwater, a solution might be futher up the road.

I had a robens starlight tent for a while as it was recommended by a relative as being simple to use and high quality, he uses his in northwestern Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, imagine my shock when it was stolen from the cargo hold of a coach going to Wales just before March 2020. Thinking of replacing it with another 😊

i am one of those expensive equipment guys you dont like .... i probably have the biggest tent collection of any one i know of (its not a collection i use them) i got quite a few Hillebergs and Helsports and even some fjällräven and alot of other tents to and NO there is no perfect tent and even it comes to my favirite tents it depends on the situation ..... and with the single wall tents its not my thing either but there are versions that work better than others .... i have a cupple of bibler style or assult tents for mountain expedition use that are made out of event or other breateble materials they do work alot better when it comes to condensation but the material can freeze up and then the breatable material dont breath anymore so they have their flaws to i do like my hillebergs more than most my other tents but because of what they are designed to do (4 season tents) they are not the best vented tents either ..... but any tents will have condensation issues is the conditions are there for condensation to form
