One of the my dad's repeated sayings to me growing up was, "You know, you can go broke saving money." It took me awhile to get what he meant, but it makes me smile still today. He taught against spaving before it had a name, haha! Wise man, who I miss...
I'm the worst spaving customer. When salespeople tell me about a "buy 1, get 1 half off" offer, I tell them I don't need two but now that I know they can sell it for less, I'll only buy one if they sell it to me for 25% off. They get mad or frustrated, and repeat the offer to buy two, and then I just smile and say "thanks anyway, I'll just wait for it to go on sale."

I was in a conversation a few days ago where one of the people said if you buy this product you will save 50%. I said well you do know that you don’t actually say 50% you spend 50%. Another person in the conversation muttered under his breath, but isn’t that the same thing. I didn’t say anything, but spending 50% is not saving 50%. You still spent 50%.
If you don’t spend anything you save 100 percent :-)
The "loyalty to a store" really hit home for me. I used to buy my professional wardrobe almost exclusively at Talbot's. I knew the sales people, the store manager, and when my book came out in 2014 they actually hosted a book-signing for me. It took me months after I retired to quit going in to say hello, browse, buy.... etc. The day I got notice from the parent company saying that since I hadn't used my Talbot's card in so long, my account was being closed felt a little weird. But y'know what? I don't need $60.00 leggings.
Spending cash makes a difference. Watching it leave my pocket is painful.
I love how you mentioned the "permission" aspect of speaking with your partner. So many people get upset about discussing purchases with your partner. It's crazy how many times people get disgusted by me and my husband discussing purchases. We keep up with different parts of our budget. We're not asking for permission when we say "can I", that's just an easier way of saying do we have this in the budget right now.
I agree, how is having a discussion with your partner about money 'asking permission'? We discuss anything over $100...... Especially, if it is a want and not a need.
Totally agree. We have a limit which doesn't require a conversation. If he wants to buy a 6-pack of his favorite ale, I'm not going to stop him - he will, however, have to share one with me. LOL!
My entire family does this and I used to as well. They buy things just because it was “on sale”. It’s not saving money if you’re spending money you don’t have, on things you don’t need, and will never use…
I have learned with those deals, the best way to save money is to not spend it. I don't need 3 peppers for $5. I just need one for $1.66

Cool new word! Thanks for the video. I see my friend fall for "spaving" all the time. He got new portable plug in wall heaters because he said it would save him on his heating bill. When I asked "how much?" He couldn't tell me. He wanted a bigger refrigerator and went to Rent a Center ( ugh! I know), because they were having a 50% off sale. He ended up with a used refrigerator that he is going to make payments on. I did the math and he could have gotten 2 new refrigerators for what he will ultimately spend. He never fails to demonstrate this wonderful new word! Great video

Spaving is a sort of fun word because I still have to think about the meaning. However the word reminds me of scamming. Maybe it means scamming.. .
Yes! Self-discipline is a must, and takes a lot of practice!
On the BOGO' s ( Buy 1, Get ...), I like to add the prices of the items up, divide by the number of items in the offer, then consider the price each. Some I memorize the actual percentage of savings. For example, the Buy 1 Get second 1/2 off is a 25% savings IF you buy in units of 2.

I unsubscribed to everything that I'd previously sent to my junk email 2 months ago. I love having an empty junk mail box! Nothing to tempt me!
You know what though, there are still emails coming through and I considered myself quite careful in checking of unchecking those marketing boxes upon making purchases!
I think it may take a full year before I've found everything! Worth the effort though as seeing a bunch of unread emails in my inbox were like a silent to do list, and sometimes I'd miss things that actually needed my attention.

I thought about spaving as situations like when you go beyond your budget, buying 10 litres of vacuum packed juice instead of the 1 we usually buy because it is 60%% off so I haave saved a great amount!
Have watched your program for several years & have enjoyed them a lot. I am the oldert of 12 children and frugal is my middle name (according to my friends). You are doing wonderful work at teaching people how to be wise with their finances. But even more, you are teaching how to work together and as a family, to reach you goals and dreams. I kind of did this 10 minutes ago and in the past. If I see shipping will be $20 on a $100 dollar order, I may put in a $200 order so I am paying 10% in shipping instead of 20%. (In this case I may buy more that I was thinking about for a second order so I am paying shipping once and not twice. IE. Larger orders rather than multiple smaller orders if I can't get free shipping.) My order today was using a 10% discount so I spend just over $150 to make the discount cover the $15 shipping...so "free" shipping. Everytime I had the money and wanted all the items. However, my post does go to show two ways of Spaving that may not be suitable for you. Never by anything you can't afford, no matter the price. PS: 10% is not a real discount in most cases, so many companies will "give" you a 10% code for signing up for their mailing list, which may cause you to buy stuff you never intended to buy.
I remember when K-mart was going out of business and everything was on clearance. I went in to check it all out (not right away, but before everything was all picked over), and I was looking at prices and thinking to myself, “This is a clearance price?” Then I pulled out my phone and checked out prices for the same item at Walmart and they were the same if not Walmart was still cheaper than the clearance Kmart prices!

I do buy on bogo for food items, and I will certainly do a better job of tracking price per unit moving forward. I think I’ve been getting good deals, but I can be more careful. Oh no! I thought spaving would be good! I have been really thinking about my savings recently and budgeting to prioritise this. Instead of getting a buzz from spending money, I have been getting that feeling when at payday I put money into my savings. Essentially, spending on myself or spaving😂. Kmart blue light specials where the ultimate definition of spaving. While the blue light special with Aldridge cheap the fact that you had to wait in the store for 15 minutes between a blue light special and the next one only caused you to spend more money as you're wandering the store
When it comes to TV sales (tv shopping shows), I have noticed that they say "buy now before the show ends and you get a second one for free".
But if you wait and go look elsewhere, you find that the item only costs half.
They say you get one free, but they put the price high so that you actually pay for the two
I am a grandmother now and wish you had been around forty years ago when I was raising my son - I would have been saving my money. I divorced my DH 20 years ago and was living with my mother then and wished I had realised I needed to be more frugal then. Later when my sister was helping me look after Mom she accused me of spending too much. She and her son were very demanding. I had made a big mistake asking for her help and I had mistakenly thought her son was a working man.
What is past is past and I am so glad I can take be inspired by your example and suggestions.

Kroger gets me too with the buy 5 save $5, etc. I do find that the spaving is heavier on spending.
I wish I had paid more attention to my parents frugal ways when I was younger but I was foolish. I have been trying to live the frugal life for about 4yrs now & it has really helped me. I'm about to make my last car payment! Yes! 😆
Never heard of spaving
Yes, so many times I have been guilty of trying to get the FREE SHIPPING on Amazon. And, now they have escalated the amount you have to spend to get free shipping.
A good deal is only a good deal if you need it in the first place! Having a firm grasp of this principle is very helpful in these situations. (I view TV adverts as a way to realise more things I don't need and, don't get me started on the airside shops in major airports!)
Personally, I can quite enjoy going down various rabbit holes on sites like Amazon, but have reasonable self-discipline, so don't fall for any of this stuff too often. I do have a rule that, with most sites where there is a minimum spend required to get free, I wait til I have sufficient 'needs' to reach that amount before I order.
I think of Ibotta as spaving. Every now and then there's a great deal, but most of the time it's just cheaper to buy the store brand even with the cash back.

Hope & Larry, one of the cleverest techniques I've seen but have NOT taken time to implement is to keep a "price book." It's a list of the purchase prices of things we buy all the time, at what store, and the date.
Retailers are very good at taking advantage of our psychology! Great tips! Love your content. Was not familiar with the term, but definitely with the concept. One thing I do to avoid the problem of minimums for free shipping is to have some standard items that will definitely get used that I know the usual price (e.g. laundry detergent, cat litter), and add some combination of those. That way I’m not just adding something that I don’t really need for the sake of free shipping. I don’t add those items unless they are the normal price (or lower) than what I would pay in the store though.
The supermarket puts items on sale that are Buy 5, Save $1 each. I used to stock up (overspend) even though we were already stocked up. Now I choose 5 items we actually NEED. Yesterday, I bought 5 items we were totally out of and saved a fortune by not spending more to save more.
I actually did this and Saved in the long run. I bought a large air conditioner for the window and shut off my central air for the summer and have saved a Lot of money!!!
Limited time offers, or you must make a decision now! I was always taught if it sounds to good to be true or a quick decision, It's a scam.
😮 new word to me. I like the phone a friend option. I agree I'm not asking for permission to buy but sometimes a second pair of eyes always helps.
"Spaving" really occurs worst when you have an expensive hobby/interest.. and someone offers a "deal" that you KNOW by experience is a GREAT price.. but you don't need the item just NOW.. but you MIGHT later. Plus getting that item doesn't mean you have all you need to actually make use of it.. ergo.. you have to go out later and purchase even MORE stuff. Many an item was purchased by ME like that.. and now I have to try and "downsize" (get rid of) all that.. at a loss in some cases.
Hobby Lobby and retail stores are expensive for a reason, folks.. to keep you from buying what you don't truly need!

Here's how I avoid buying things at the grocery store that I don't need.. READ the FLYER before you shop. Bogos will be listed.
Plus.. NEVER leave cc info for 'next time'. Just the idea of that freaks me out.

I had not heard of the term "spaving" but I soon worked out what it was. I have an unrelated problem of overspending and that is: charitable donations. I give regular donations to a handful of charities but I frequently get emails asking for donations and they are ALL worthy. Sometimes I can say, I do enough and delete the emails and other times I think, if I were hungry/homeless or whatever, I'd want people to donate. I'll consider how well off I am compared to so many others and consider it my duty to donate, but it can become a substantial amount over the course of a year. I should probably just budget a set amount for donations, but I feel so mean when I ignore their requests.
You don't want to burden the charities you donate to by becoming a client through overspending. You'll cost them and others more than you donated to get back to your previous financial security.
You are right. Most of the requests are for worthy causes. We set a budget amount for charitable donations and only give from that amount. It limits my choices, but that not a bad thing. It helps govern my emotional giving. Best regards.
Digging this video, guys! I've always said there is something fishy about bogos. I normally don't buy them, mostly because I feel the expiration is near. You guys are sooo right! We MUST be vigilant, and put on our FULL ARMOUR , for the daily battle. 🤑

As always very useful info, keep them coming, the key here is timing , to know when you need to buy something or skip buying many times very difficult task
I put everything I want into the cart online and then pare it down to fit the budget. If another couple of dollars gets me free shipping I check whether shipping is more expensive than the gap and if it is then I already have some chosen items to add to get over the line. That way I am always glad to have whatever was a last minute add, and when I look at that thing in my house it is a symbol of having saved the shipping fee. :)

Our Food Lion grocery store does this alot. They also do buy any 5 of these items take $1 off each. I avoid anything in that so called sale but take advantage of the bogo by only buying one item which does save.
I have done the buy one get one half price before. It's the store brand of dairy ease. That I take at least once a week. Did the same thing for my Mom. With cover the counter meds and nutritional drinks.
Wow! Another word to add to our repertoire of finances! Spaving! I don't know how you feel about what I've been doing over the last year since it wasn't addressed, but I have been buying things I don't need at the moment when on sale at the grocery store since prices are through the roof now and we will most likely continue to see that as well as shortages here and there. I've bought mostly when on sale and still do sometimes....ex: Kroger has had some great 99 cent sale items and I've bought probably at least 20 cans of Campbells soup. I know they will be used, so have been spacing that way. We do a lot of our meals from scratch, but sometimes not, so it's nice to have those items. Thank you again for your always great advice!

Not sure if they have this in the USA. In Australia we have 2 things called Afterpay and Zip Pay. It's where you buy a product either in store or online and you can then spread out the payments over time. Afterpay works where you pay 25% of the cost straight away and then 25% more each 2 weeks until the item is paid off. Zip Pay is where you commit to making regular payments on the item. You can choose the amount but there is a minimum you have to pay. You can spread the payments over 12 months but you do pay a monthly fee on top of the regular payments With each payment system you have to apply and you are a given a credit limit of how much you can spend. Because it is offered pretty much everywhere it is often used. A lot of people get overburdened with having to find the money for repayments.
I've seen the "after pay" option on some web sites. I always wonder why someone would do that? 😬
With living rurally, prime never gets us anything in less than 4-7 days, so we don't pay for prime. We keep our credit cards out of shopping apps, so no easy spending. 😊

Sometimes you need to spend money to save money. Your spending makes your accounts go down in the short term but over the years of taking that savings and reinvesting in things that saves you money, the savings compound. Your lifestyle isn't changing but your cost of living decreases. Example: Plant a garden. You need to invest in the garden and if you invest the savings in a greenhouse the savings compound. A different type of compound savings is a heat pump. You buy one that you can install yourself (savings one) The heat pump lowers savings but they use half the energy of a gas furnace (savings two) and the energy credit of 30% is given for the heat pump ( savings three ).
This type of savings increases your quality of life and saves you money.
I'm a suckered for Kroger's "Buy More, Save More" where if you buy 5 or more, you save another $1 per.

today i almost bought a notebook , but left the store that had both my final choices for a good deal empty handed --because the clerk tried to talk me into more expensive ones, with even "better" discounts.
i said: well, the discount is higher on this, but so is the price, it still comes to 100 € more than the ones i want, and he looked at me like he never heard that before.
i wallked back to the ones i actually wanted, where he then tried to sell them for "just 10€ more" , BUT i get a (cheap) protective bag and a flimsy mouse with it.
i said: i have those at home, in good quality, no i dont need back up, its a waste of space with a 10€ price tag.
it went back and forth, and eventually i left and bought one on their website over in store pick up for the same price.
i went inside the store because i wanted to support the offline business and the workers, but those spavings are way more awkward in person than online.
I leave my money in cash.If i order anything i use my chime card and i have to physically drive to walgreens to put it ON the card and then order .It helps

Sometimes the store raises the price before they offer the B1G1 deal.
When I heard spending in order to save I thought you meant f.ex. spending 20.000 dollars on a greenhouse in order to save 400 dollars on vegetables a year, which might also be an idea for a video 😉. While there are a lot of other reasons why people prefer homegrown vegetables, if you garden while on a tight budget, you should always do the math before buying expensive equipment.
I get it. I really do. HOWEVER, there are times when I've shot myself in the foot because I bought the cheapest thing I could find and it was a waste of money and I ended up getting much more use out of the more expensive product I originally rejected. I'll never buy a cheap pair of sneakers again, for instance. The cheap ones don't protect and support my foot properly and wear out in a New York Minute. I'm far better served by waiting for sales on the name brand. Maybe you could do a video about the times it pays to spend a bit more - thus actually saving money.
At CVS if the sale is bogo and only one is available, they will sell you that item at half price.
I see these promotions all the time at a local grocery store (I.e. - Buy 2/Get 1 Free). But since I have limited storage in my kitchen, I usually pass. I can see it would help to save money for people in larger families but for me, that math would not really work. My goal is always to use up what I have on hand.
I have another topic you may want to check into. I was at a grocery store yesterday and needed toothpaste, but it was more expensive than where I usually buy toiletries. I considered going to the other store, but thought I may save the gas money and time by buying it while I was already at the grocery. I usually make a list of toiletries, and paper products that I'll need in the next couple of weeks and get them all at the same time and in the same place. But I ended up just paying the extra price!
I like the new word. I only spend on those types of sales on what I need for like shampoo and conditioner and other cosmetics that I normally buy. BUT Other than that, I got marketed too and fell for the Mither’s Day marketing bad! I spent over budget only to get the x amount gift at a special price. I returned it and bought it online to send out of state and spent way less and under budget! Whew!😅
Never heard of spaving, but I do it! My family lives in MN and I live in Arkansas. When I plan a trip home, for 2 months before I go, I watch the sales flyers for the stores I don't have here. When I see a fantastic deal I send my son to the store to get it and I refund him when I get there. Example: Canned mushrooms were 3/ $1. He picked me up 2 cases after letting me know the expiration date. I got enough to use before they expired. Spaving can be an awesome thing if it's done right :)

I don’t spave often. My mother is close to being a hoarder (she just doesn’t hold on to literal garbage- otherwise, she is a hoarder), I can’t space if it means I am going to have something I don’t need sitting around taking up space for any lengthy period of time. I look at buy one, get one half off and my heart rate goes up. Unless it is something I use regularly….then, I try to stack that deal with coupons and rebate apps and then tell everyone O know that I am the shrewdest shopper on the planet.
I hate amazon too. Ridiculous get rid of amazon, walgreens almost gone and same with cvs

Some of these spaving offers aren't too bad of a deal IF the quantities purchased work with your usage rate. You may find that stocking up a month's worth or even 1 years worth of product is acceptable for some level of savings or just plain convience over shopping and buying more often. The problem is figuring out just how much you use. I will often write a purchase date on an item's packaging in permanent marker, or the date iit is opened for use when figuring usage rate. It seems like personal hygine and grocery store condiments are the hardest for me to guage.

A good spaving? Having to power wash and treat decking before it dries out/cracks and I need to replace which will be more costly

If you spend money to save money, that can also be a good thing if you plan it out. For instance the extra in my grocery budget for legitimate deals. Right?
Oh, absolutely! I think if something is a good price, you would buy it anyway, and it's in the budget, then these incentives can be a real help. The problem comes in when you spend money you didn't intend to - which is what I think happens far more often than average.
Sounds like spaving is something I do.
When the sales person says you can save 50% I think to myself that i can save 100% if i dont buy it at all! Because to be honest i really don't need it!

I think part of the equation has to be whether people are buying things they would not normally have purchased or don't need or items are really priced too high - even with the discount. With a deal like that, gee whiz, there are SO many things you can do with some extra English muffins that I don't think I would see that as spaving. Great comment, which points out important considerations in the spaving conversation.
