How does the government even come up with these numbers? We’ll talk about it briefly ans then we’ll tell you how you can double-down on saving, even while prices continue to rise.

NO way in the world is the government representing inflation as it really is. That being said it is what it is and we have to work with what we have. Something I am noticing is the more stressed I have become (some personal and business stuff) and my sleep is suffering, I find myself slipping into old bad habits. Time to refocus and get myself back together.

We pretty much shop what's on sale at the grocery stores. My wife has that amazing ability to look in the fridge and from what's there, come up with something good to eat, which is great. Another thing is, she will cook a meal but with enough for two or three meals of leftovers, we'll have leftovers the next night and/or the night after, and then she freezes what's left. Tonight we had beef and gravy left over from New Year's Day, over mashed potatoes, with some freshly cooked vegetables. The key is to make things that make good leftovers, as well as having something that freezes well and can be used later, whether as the same dish, or as an ingredient. Example, leftover chili gets frozen and then used to make something else, whether it's a taco salad, used in place of refried beans, or whatever creative use comes up. Last night was spaghetti that was frozen a couple of weeks ago, had some freshly cooked green beans and a salad. It's also very handy to have stuff like that on hand if you're working and not wanting to come home and cook a whole meal.
Another handy thing: we watch in-store for clearance items as well as checking the specials, and pick up food to donate to the local food bank. Example, one of the local stores has boxes of cereal for $1.49 and others for $1.99. We really don't eat much cereal any more, but the food bank loves it for the families with children who come in, or the homeless people in the area.

I do think they are giving an accurate indication. What is really happening is corporate greed. While I’m here, I just wanted to thank you for teaching me about loss leaders. The first time I REALLY paid attention to my local grocery flyer I saved $30 btwn loss leaders and the digital coupons. And it was all food I regularly eat. I did the same thing today. Saved $34, and even the cashier was amazed. I bought boneless skinless chicken breasts in a value pack(regular 4.99 a pound, down to 3.99, down to 1.67 with digital coupon clipped), cheddar cheese, frozen lunches for work came in at $1.50ea, etc…. So once again thank you so much.

Honestly, it’s not inflation as much as “shrinkflation” - corporations are giving us less product for the same price. The biggest companies are merging and giving less choice to the consumer. Meanwhile, the CEOs are posting ridiculous profits and passing that on to shareholders not consumers. While some in the government are trying to deal with this, those bankrolled by those big corporations are preventing any regulation or change to the status quo.

I was looking for baked beans yesterday. All of the brand names contained "Bioengineered Ingredients" 😮 Not to mention the High Fructose Corn Syrup.
I find that it is much better & often cheaper to make my own pre-made mixes (ie chocolate cake, pancakes, pizza mix, cookie mix, biscuit mix, ect) I buy the ingredients in bulk and use glass jars or individual ziplock baggies to store my mixes.

It's not dishonest, especially when store employees tell you to do that. They know how much is in stock, and when they expect to restock. Sometimes it's also done to remove items with short expiration dates.

In the Aug-Sept time frame of '22, we came across tp at Grocery Outlet and a good price compared to other stores. We bought enough to "last a year" and within 2 to 4 weeks the price we paid became a great price. With only 2 packs left (I guess we guesstimated wrong) we bought again this past Wednesday. From what I can tell, a pack about the same size has gone from $11.xx to $15.xx since October-ish '23; honest price comparison of tp is about impossible and would require a super computer. Still we bought enough to last a bit over a year. My sensitivities only hope that the price doesn't tank between now and when we need to buy again. - This type of bulk buying for the larder is how we have been saving against inflation.

If impulse spending is a problem, look at having groceries delivered or curbside pickup.
Eliminate the temptation to buy things you won't use, don't need, have no room for.
If spending money on junk is a problem, makw it impossible.
Freeze your debir and credit cards.
    Freeze that checkbook,too.
Set your router to block all online shopping sites.delete those emails from stores.

Regarding food, it's useful to get back to first principles, namely that food is meant to NOURISH. I don't bother with coupons or 2-for-1 deals if the stuff is UPF food-like substances full of crazy amounts of sugar and weird chemicals or based on white bleached flour, etc. Also, a lot of people will say that this "food" is cheaper, but that's not my experience. Potatoes, root vegetables, cabbage, and dried beans and pulses are usually pretty cheap, and if you know how to cook them you can enjoy lots of delicious meals---and avoid the burgeoning epidemic of chronic illnesses that result from a diet of UPF rubbish. If you live in the US where your government somehow can't provide universal health care, saving money by buying this stuff can end up costing you a fortune.

CPI is a flawed system. It misrepresents your Inflation. E.g. CPI states used car prices have increased as did food because I do not need to buy a car I careless about that inflation. Food increases in smaller % do it states per the CPI that it had a small increase BUT I buy food all the time do my costs are up. If the used car prices drop they assume inflation is dropping because the cost of a car is much higher than food. But food bring higher means I have less money to bug something I have to buy vice buying a used car. Just sample it also has appliances, or other bug ticket items. Everyone has a different items on the CPI that affect them. Hardly anyone has every item on the CPI in their budget.

That's a really great question. We try follow the intent of the store. If the coupon says "one coupon per customer "then we feel like we can both be separate customers. If it says "one coupon per family "then we really try to use the coupon the way the store intended for it to be used. HyVee allows you to use a coupon each time you walk in the store. So we could go multiple times throughout the week or go to a different location and there honestly wouldn't be an issue at all.

Im not sure if you can timers fir light fixtures and lamps to come on or turn off off during hours used the most.
I saw someone on a television show who cut the electric off 100 % at night til the morning
And then ive heard of people using timers on the fridge freezer doors an alarm goes off after the appliance door is open longer than a set time

Does the Govt give anything accurately? Hmmm
Do they honestly have our best interests in mind?

They are absolutely NOT accurately rating inflation. For example, the Social Security cost-of-living increase was something like 3% this year I want to say… My husband’s 90-year-old grandmother is living on Social Security and her homeowners insurance is probably going to at least go up 20%.!! On top of all of her utilities and groceries going up! How are people on SS supposed to live?

If grandmother has savings, she can increase her insurance deductible to lower her insurance cost. HTH

Here's an example of how the government lies to you find said we have increased jobs over the past 3 years by whatever percent or numbers well of course jobs have been increased because everybody quit their jobs during covid and now they had to get new jobs so of course that is going to increase new jobs.
Don't believe what the government tells you they lied about agent Orange.
