elitefts.com - So You Think You Can Deadlift? (Part 1)

- Welcome to the long-awaited follow-up to Matt Wenning's popular "SYTYCS" series. This time, Matt targets the pull in the same expert fashion that he did with the squat. We brought in loyal elitefts™ customer and amateur strongman competitor Ryan Minney as our training subject and his form is broken down, analyzed and a thorough plan to improve his deadlift is laid-out.
Wenning covers:
1) the importance of the deadlift
2) why we focus on the conventional DL
3) body position/mechanics
4) spinal arch
5) static muscle strength
6) collecting data to determine weakness
7) basic set-up
8) avoiding a break in upper back position
9) transferability of pin-pulls to deadlifting
10) make your back a solid piece of iron
11) leg strength vs. back strength in the pull
He starts Ryan at 135, progresses to 225, 315, 365 and around 405. Bar speed is important. Make every one of your reps (including warm-ups) "fast, violent and perfect!"

THIS, is what I've been looking for. I have just started back with deadlifts after over 16 years and really needed someone to help me with fundamentals and technique. Big J helped a lot, and this dude is awesome. I'm going to be 56 and have never been great at this lift, and don't want to hurt myself, but this will help a LOT. Thank you!
Hey all just wanted to say I just hit my miss weight in this video for 5 reps today and went 20lbs over! Thanks Matt and Dave Tate for the opportunity to learn.
Excellent! :D
Ryan Minney way to work man! I will watch the other vids in this series later... fuckin tired. But I have a 600 lb deadlift that I lost through ineffective training . 585 at Worlds 2 weeks ago. I missed 595. Time to train. All the best!
If you look at videos of various elite deadlifters, record setters, etc, you'll notice the head position is highly variable and mostly up to personal preference. As long as your back is aligned right, your head can go where ever. If you think about it, the weight is transferring to your back at the shoulders, so as long as your neck positioning doesn't weaken or affect your back, it won't really matter. Some get a lot of benefit from leading with their head, others pack their neck, etc.
I am in love with this "So you think you can" series. I am learning SO MUCH. I finished watching the squat one and learn't at least double of what I already knew in such a short time!! Thank you for these videos.
What a great instructor. This is what the Internet was made for. Free quality education. Thanks
Dave very technical, cant thank you enough. How anyone could not like this is beyond me.
You know what absolutely pisses me off when I watch this video? Planet Fitness ad. commercials that perpetuate the bullshit stereotypes of heavy lifters... Just look at Matt Wenning in this video. He's strong and manly as fuck, but just listen to him. Listen to how calm and articulate he is. Strong, smart, and dedicated.
I've loved both the bench and squat videos and learned so much from them. I want to thank you guys. I've been waiting for a deadlift video for a while and here it is! I am so happy! Please make an overhead press, power clean, bent over row and so on videos in the future.
Thanks so much for informing us so well!
Just what I had in mind. My deadlift got a lot better when I started to maintain a more "neutral" head position and not looking up and "arching" my neck
keep up these videos they are very informative. These are hands down the Best Form Videos on TH-cam. Awesome Job.
Hey man, thanks so much for taking your time to make this video. You have a good talent for explaining things well and making things easy to understand.
Thank you for this! Deadlifting is by far my favorite exercise, and this is a very clear, complete and extensive tutorial. Thanks again!
Great Video. I love the cue to pull the bar back and thrust the hips forward . . .I needed a cue for initial phase of the pull. Excellent
Loved the so you think you can squat series and now this. Quality videos.
Jesus, it's the BEST deadlift explanation ever! He explains everything I wanted to hear. Many thanks!
Definitely having the back issue when get up to like 90-100%. These videos have been helpful.
Doing some heavy t bar rows with good form (keeping back straight like in deads) really helped with keeping my back straight while maxing out on deadlifts.
Such a great coach and full of knowledge. Definitely live these videos thanks for posting, they help out my training quite a bit!
Great video, loved the squat series. When can we expect part 2? Thanks
Excellent video. I currently deadlift 405x4 and my goal is 500 the form is really coming into play now that i cant just muscle up the weight. this video has some excellent points and i'm going to try everything i saw here next deadlift session :)
It's my birthday! Really! Great present. Thanks!
This video and the other "So You Think You Can" series vids and articles should be required reading and watching for ANYONE who wants to lift.
This was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting these.
omg, i wish i had someone like you to teach me this. i learned a lot just from the first part of this program. i'm at work right now, but i'm really itching to go deadlift right now and apply what i've learned so far. good stuff!
Thank you very much for this!!! This the type of information I've been wanting. As a new old lifter this is great info to help get started correctly.
ive been waiting for this for so long
14:55 is some amazing advice, thanks so much Dave. Your videos are great.
Been waiting for this for too long! Liked the video once I saw the title!
Awesome Matt ! Pls keep the videos coming !
Looking forward to part 2
Awesome video man... Appreciated.
Excellent info! Any videos or tips on grip strength? Its my biggest weakness in regards to pulling, thanks
Is his head position okay...? I was under the impression looking up at the ceiling is bad.
I've been waiting so long for this! Thank you!
MY GOD IT'S FINALLY HERE!!
Finally I have waited for this for a loong time!!
Awsome. Been waiting for this one!
Steve I use a spud DL belt and center it over the belly button. When to use it is personal preference I typically see injury once weights go over 350 consistently. Some never wear them some swear by them personally I am a better safe than sorry guy.
Can't believe that this day has come!
Excellent. I'm so glad you say about pulling back and driving the hips forward, it confirms to me that I'm teaching it right to clients. I have them imagine there are chains attached to their shoulders pulling them back and towards the ceiling as they drive the hips forward.
Matt Wenning ftw!
Great info, this came out just before deadlift day woop woop!
Great video... Very well explained...
This was superb!Thankyou very much!
Dave's the man on deadlift
I actually hate doing pin or box pulls. Actually always feels harder to me. I feel i get better use of quads to break the ground when pulling from floor. Deficit even feels better than pin or block pulls for me.
Here we go
loved this video!!
it took ages...but was worth it!
Beyond awesome! Thanks!
The question is should I retract scapula (touch scapulas) or protract (away from body like in dip bar)while starting lift ?
freaking awesome video - solid gold!!!
Hey elites, do you guys do any events or so which i can participate or come over to your gym to learn stuffs from you guys?
Good stuff
What is the optimal place to situate the waist belt and at what max% should you start using it?
Well... i have a question regarding shoulder blades together. Dave posted a very amazing article and very shirt - standing erect in dl position and doing just that with the scapula - and looking at your hands (all that without barbell). See the angles? Now no wonder why i see Hulse sometimes with unlocked elbows or that some pwfters have many injuries.
I believed everyone in EFS had that under the coaching cues, so i'm confused.
Care to share Matt?
this video literally fixed my deadlift.
part 2 please dave!!!
Fantastic post, thank you :)
dave, your the man
Externally, my technique looks like what it should (generally speaking, I'm sure a trained eye could see problems), but my hamstrings just get shredded from conventional deadlifting. I don't know if I just have weak hamstrings, or if my mechanics aren't correct, but it seems a bit extreme how bad the DOMS are in my hammys after deadlifting. Any thoughts?
amazing video
Greattttt video!!
So informative!
This tutorial is awesome. Have the squatting one saved as well. I'm a noob at both lifts and have a lot to learn but this is gonna help me a lot. I was able to DL 275 today but it looked really sloppy compared to this. Just like Wennig said, my back rounded and my legs became dominant in the lift. I did try to pull it up as fast as possible tho. One question I have is how wide does my grip on the bar need to be.
good luck bro grip should be shoulder width
Andre Ledo
Thank you sir! Yeah I was watching myself pulling and I used my back too, its like I used everything except my upper body lol
Wenning might be a world class powerlifter but he doesn't seem to know much if anything about coaching. I would go to Starting Strength for anything related to technique. Mark Rippetoe uses 70 pages of pure information to describe how to squat in his book.
How do you solve for the problem of grip strength? Grip strength prevents me from doing as many reps as I should at heavier weight.
When's part 2 coming?
I'm surprised he never corrects his chin position. I sometimes have that same head/chin position issue too.
Great info
MOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRR DEADLIFT VIDEOS!!!!! PARRRRRRRRT TWOOOO PLEASE!!!!!
good stuff
Yes!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!
Thankyou!
Is there info on the mobility work he mentioned?
this is matt wenning
14:53 That is a gold CUE
how can I strengthen my back to prevent rounding?
saystart I’m gonna assume you figured this one out by now
Boring Story Well If anyone else looking for the answer, do bent over rows, dumbell rows and facepulls, all with good form. It helps a lot as long as you do ’em with good form and a straight back. All those excercises also help your bench.
Do deads with low weight, so your back doesn’t round and then strengthen your back. Scapular retraction is key.
Also learn correct bracing so you can keep a neutral spine, arching is WRONG. Ribs down, big breath, tight back and lift!
You don't say anything about the hands, should you always keep the same hand position? one, i assume your strongest over and one under? I usually switch them between sets but I don't lift nearly this much
Hello!
I'm 6'7 give or take. How far from the bar should I be?
whats up with the head position
Watch super training with mark bell..he gives a better description. .ex u don't arch ur back and keep ur head up..this dude gave a lot of good info..but mark bell being as great as he is I listen to his advice
How does Dave not say anything about his neck position?? it looks painful
Probably because thats Matt Wenning not Dave.
good video subscribed
brilliant
Haha oh man I tensed up so when he was doing that final lift.
release a "So you think you can grow a beard" and then ill be set for life.
where
"With that being said"... Yea, i'm a fan of The Bach' too!
i'm 130lbs, my peak was 385 lbs 1rm with decent form (no sloppy "humping the bar" kind of stuff). i honestly don't know what happened but it really hurts my lower back to deadlift 185 lbs now. i've taken 4 weeks off of anything that requires me to use my low back and so far, i can still feel it when i bend over. any ideas what happened? suggestions on what to do for recovery? i really miss squats and deadlift...
gotskittles did your back ever heal?
where's the intro music from?
FINALLY!!
Why is he dropping the weight? Is he suppose to do that?
best videos, thank you.
duder is looking at the freakin CEILING when he deadlifts...what's up with that?
Not a big deal
Possibly keeping his spine straight
Terrible form. I laughed when he said 225 was 50% his max- dude struggles at 315 and 225 sucked as well.
Finally !
PRAISE GOD ITS HERE
If he dropped his chin and head down instead of looking up that would of droped his hips a little. Bringing him to a better starting postition dropping his hips.
Fuck, i have to do form checks and film myself more.. Great advice, thank you hopefully i'll become a stronger me :).
LOL!!! That was pretty good!
RIP headphone users...
Damn it bitches, use proper audio recording the next time!
that bar drop tho-
laughed my ass off reading this comment.
