  • We love our laundry system, but it needs some minor adjustments. Today we're going to add a laundry sorting station to our laundry room, along with some more organization to Tom's area. Plus, a few fun decorating surprises, too!

    MAKING THE LAUNDRY LABELS
    Step 1: I purchased round Avery Labels like these amzn.to/3An1hXF
    Step 2: Go to www.avery.com/ and click on "Templates" and then "Avery Design & Print"
    Step 3: Now you'll have to create an account (but this is worth it to me!) and then click on the red "Design & Print" Button
    Step 4: Enter your Avery product number (located on the label package) and a bunch of templates for labels will appear
    Step 5: Pick one that you like and customize! (Note: when you're in the designer, on the right hand side you can select between editing ALL labels and one at a time. I added the black border to all of them but then customized them one at a time)
    Hope this helps!

    I noticed your dryer opens on the wrong side for ease of moving wet laundry from the washer into the dryer. I had the same problem until I realized the dryer door is reversible. Maybe yours is, too. It only took me about 20 minutes to fix a problem I'd lived with (and complained about) for 7 years!! Anyway, love your videos as I'm a minimalist, too.

      I purposely keep my dryer on low...the most I've seen him take it is to medium. And when I notice that I turn it back down. But all these years have decided that's why I had button up shirts in high school that I could wear once. They never fit the same after...we rarely lined dried growing up..it all makes so much sense now. But I like to hang hubby's button up work shirts, but he dries them. So if I'm feeling extra I will set up the drying rack and line dry his shirts, pants, and jeans. And sometimes I throw in the dryer.

After the laundry room makeover, it looks so nice and a lot more functional. Together, you make a great team, and I love the interaction between you guys. When you research those laundry sheets, if they come in a roll (like paper towels or TP), you could hang them on the wall right beside the washer, so the kiddos could reach them easily.

    • @sarahburke8955
      @sarahburke8955 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If you can carve out some space and make it very purposely for your prep items, it helps a ton! That's how I manage our supplies... then I "go shopping" from what I have (always keeping note of what I need to replenish, of course). I don't try to keep all the "extra" in the same pantry area as the daily use type of stuff.

    • @LittleMama5
      @LittleMama5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is kind of me. I've got all of my supplies in the same room. We use as we need and replenish. Came in handy during lockdown, I only had to shop every 2-4 weeks. I'm still peeling the onion to total simplicity, but made great progress the past couple of years.

    • @TTaddicted
      @TTaddicted 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      So... I totally am a minimalist AND a prepper. I know, it's totally an oxymoron. The key is to be intentional about your inventory. We figured out how long each item, that we like to have a supply of, lasts. Then we figured out how many we need for "x" time. That might be two weeks, a month, even up to a year. (By the way, it usually takes less than you think) Then we rotate it. Both my husband and I don't mind taking the time and energy to do this. And since we are minimalists, we have some space for it (even though our house is small, we have a decent sized laundry room that doubles as our pantry).

    • @sabl6381
      @sabl6381 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. I lived near Seattle when all the Covid and social unrest was happening, and it caused me to panic prep. We've since moved and have our first baby on the way, which has me on a decluttering, functionality kick. I'm utilizing Dana K. White's container principle in regard to prepping: set aside one shelf, one box, whatever it is. Fill it with extra, rotational staple items. Once it's full, stop. I've come to realize that the lone wolf, our-house-must-have-everything supply isn't healthy. We tend to underestimate how important neighbors, community, etc would be in a truly dire situation.

    This will help Tom. The washing machine is what really washes the clothes. Detergents are used to change the pH of the water so that dirt and stains released from the fabric. Just see detergent as a PH changer and the washing machine as the heavy lifter.

    I like what Tom said: "We have a minimal wardrobe, so we treat our clothes well." Exactly! That was how most of us grew up. With less clothes; therefore, we treated those clothes with tender loving care!!! For example: Take off your Sunday clothes and when you return home, do NOT play in them and hang them up carefully.

    • @elissa3188
      @elissa3188 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unfortunately, clothes like everything else aren't made to last. Therefore, it doesn't matter how well you treat them - they will fall apart sooner rather than later. Jeans all have elastic stretch that breaks down. Shirts from the same company that used to last for over 10+ years now are thread bare within a year. It's not about the individual, it's about the clothing companies trying to make a buck. Fridges, washing machines, etc., don't last as long. They are built to be replaced not repaired-- gotta love capitalisim at its finest.
      (Side note: fewer clothes (not less))

      @workinonit9562 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@elissa3188 If you don't put clothes in the dryer for long they last a lot longer, same for sheets and towels. We tumble them for 5-10 minutes then hang outside or in our basement drying area. Great for when the electric goes out.

    Small suggestion: if you don't have one designated person doing all the laundry, leave the empty basket on top of the washer or dryer when you run a load in the washer as a reminder to everyone that there is a load to switch into the dryer. Otherwise it might get forgotten for a few days and sour.

    I do 90% of the laundry in my house and keep my “non-dryer” dirty clothes in a separate hamper as well however, I will wash them with other clothes. I put a magnet on top of the washer to remind me to look for those items that should not go in the dryer. It’s a nice visual because I can get busy and easily forget to pull out the hang dry stuff. Maybe this will help somebody!

I store my supplies in a separate part of our home so when I need something, I just "go shopping" from those supplies, instead of having things spilling out of cabinets and shelves. I should also mention that we live in a VERY small home with 4 people, so organization and minimalism is very important to keeping my sanity! But, here's the thing: I'm not a prepper, but I do have a full emergency kit and a well-stocked pantry just in case. It's smart to have extras on hand in case you're stuck on your own for a while with no gas, no electricity, no services. So, I've chosen to "manage that inventory" (as Dawn says) because it gives me peace of mind. Worth it!

    This video inspired me to fix up mine. My laundry room isn’t as well lit or as bright and shiny as yours, but I’ve cleaned our and I’ve been able to maintain it. So much more organized so thank you Dawn & Tom!
    Before, we kept two laundry hampers in our bedroom for clothes.
    One for our weekend clothes and my work clothes and towels, and the other basket was for my fiancé‘s work uniforms/work socks.
    This caused me to sort through the clothes and wet towels (yuck, I know!) when I did laundry on Fridays.
    We have shelving in our laundry room so I finally put up baskets with labels for my fiancé‘s work uniforms & socks and a separate basket for towels.
    We still keep our laundry tote hamper in the bedroom for our regular clothes, but it’s so much easier to do laundry, OMG.

So I put hang up clothes neatly on the back of the chair so they don’t get wrinkled, pants & shorts folded on the chair & undies & socks on the arm of the chair. Her laundry area was a washer and dryer put in the entrance of the living room. No door or curtains just there for everyone to see. Yet I never remember laundry stacking up. It was taken care of right away. Now I have a big laundry room in this house a laundry stacks up. Get back on that soap box, Dawn! 😄 The laundry room looks so much better with just a few changes, and will be even prettier when you paint it mint green. I use TruEarth laundry sheets. They work great! One sheet for a regular load and two for a large load. I have a subscription, so I don't even have to remember to order. Two envelopes of sheets are mailed to my home each month, which is enough for the 3 of us. The envelopes slide right beside my washer (I have front-loaders stacked on top of one another in a closet in my hallway. When our grandson came to live with us permanently at almost 12 years of age, I taught him how to properly do his own laundry. Let me tell you about my rule when buying clothes. I do the scrunch wrinkle test, by bunching the fabric tightly in my fist, then releasing. If the material mostly springs back into shape, it's good. If it continues to look like a wrinkled mess....nope, not coming into my house. Moral of the story? I do NOT iron! I own an iron, but only for an emergency. I cannot remember the last time I ironed! (By the way, you can double a towel and iron on the floor or any other flat, stable surface.) The last time I used an ironing board was 30+ years ago, I think. Blessings! ❤

    I also love my collapsible laundry basket, since my laundry room and the bedrooms are on different floors. I learned about the basket from “Nourishing Minimalism” on TH-cam. It takes up no room to pet on a shelf or hang up and won’t get filled up with clutter that way. Yay!

    I use those laundry sheets! I love them and for the most part, probably 90%, will only use them. I have some liquid, a small bottle, for really dirty rags and work clothes. The sheets take up no space, no plastic (which i like a lot), and the packaging is compostable. It’s $12, which is what I spent at Costco, and it comes to my mailbox. Super easy!

    The laundry room looks great! DIY tip-mop the floor with a vinegar-water solution. Rinse. Paint the linoleum flooring with a good porch paint. Bam. Problem solved. It will be easier to clean

    Those few changes made a big difference! Looks good. I think I will go rethink my laundry room right now. Looking forward to reading people's comments on the environmentally safe laundry detergents.

    I'm anti-ironing board. Most materials ranging from silks to cottons to wools can be thrown (dry) into a dryer for 10 min with a wet washcloth to steam the wrinkles out. For a special event (rare): dry cleaners.

      I agree! I sew so an ironing board is essential. But there are workarounds for situations where a separate board is inconvenient.

      Yes! The only reasons my iron gets used is sewing and professionalism. If not it just sits there

    I’m using TruEarth Laundry Strips and I love them! No plastic container! And no lugging a heavy jug around when I do the shopping. They come in a paper envelope - so minimalist in the packaging! I am very happy I switched. Too many wins to count.

    I place my delicates on a hanger then hang on the drying rack. I would think this way would be easier for you to reach the rack. The laundry room looks great!

    I have a condo, and have to go to a laundry room in another bldg. (for over 20 years), so the last thing I needed was a laundry room video, but I watched because I really like you 2 together.... great relationship!

    I’m a shortie too in the house and I have a small collapsible step that tucks away that I use to step in to hang the laundry … works fab!

    I see a laundry basket as a "pasture", where the bins are "corrals". Easier to catch what you want from a bin! Being a clothesline user, I actually need my laundry basket for carrying the load, or two, through to hang it out and collect it

    Doing laundry was one of my childhood chores. It’s a great skill to learn and really not that hard.
