"The Swimmer." A truly extraordinary movie. From an exceptional short story by John Cheever. Superb performance by Lancaster deftly supported by a roster of character actor pros. Catch it if you can.

Bless Gilbert's heart...he was able to keep it PG for the aloted time. How great it would have been to see him go off on a tangent...RIP.

I love that movie! Burt did it at the exact right time in his life.. loved All Burt Lancaster's movies, Janice Rule did a good job playing his ex also.. I sure miss Robert Osborne as well!

i first saw this a couple of years ago - I had just finished a collection of Cheever short stories and saw an ad for a boutique DVD of "The Swimmer" i said to myself, "It can't possibly be a film of that story about the swimming pools, can it? That would be so weird!" but it was, so i picked it up. A wonderful film - almost surreal without any self-consciously "weird" elements. Some find the acting to be "stilted and artificial" but I think the acting style adds to the sense of disorientation that the film cultivates.
A fine film, well worth the watch.

The late, great Robert Osborne will always be a TCM legend!!

Gilbert did a good job explaining this movie because I felt it was very hypnotic also and pulls you in but of course people who are into action films or superhero movies would find this terribly boring .

The Swimmer is on TH-cam Movies right now for free...Neddy swims through the gamut of wealth in suburban Connecticut pool by pool. The pristine private pools he shamelessly takes advantage of comes to a grinding halt when he enters the public pool crowded with a mass crowd of the less fortunate. The dichotomy is jarring. It has one of the most haunting endings you can imagine.

      Neddy!
Found the first house on Zillow a while back. The pool, that view, even the statues are still there.

The first time that I saw this film, it was also very late at night, about 1989. I still don't know anybody else who's seen it.

I agree with everything that Gilbert said about this interesting film. Who knew? 😊

Care for a deluded martini? Found this gem while Mad Men was on and we were doing the martini float in the pool. We'd watch it at least once during the summer and quote the lines.
    Fun times.

Seriously! The Swimmer followed by Freaks, then The Conversation and Blow-Up (a great pairing, though i'd have reversed the order). Talk about hypnotic films!

George C Scott in this role ? ... nope .
I mean I'm sure he could have done a brilliant job with it but Burt Lancaster was perfect for this job and more believable as the charming guy with the women .

My wife n' I find it unwatchable, everyone self-consciously "acting" including Lancaster. Most strange.

@@NeilDohertyMusic "nobody talks like that in real life!" In 1968 Country Clubs, everybody talked like that.
