The film gives the impression of the passage of time because of the revelations along the way but the time frame is actually a few hours in a single day where you see the broken dreams and empty promises of a lifetime. I agree Burt Lancaster gives a riveting portrayal of a man’s life derailed. My speculation about Ned is that he had a mental breakdown and that he slipped away from the mental hospital where he had been “keeping himself” for the last few years.

In the begining of the film, he's running as if he's a grown young man breaking into the adult world, (rite of passage)but escaping from an unloved childhood.
His life of wealth, success and excessive pleasure, through manipulation, fails to fill the void, as is the life of many narcissists.
Notice how the film ends with him in a fetal position?
Notice how he runs and hugs the lonely boy, who he thinks is going to dive into the empty pool?
He relates his life to the boy.

I love this movie. Seems to me he has a psychotic break with all reality Bird Man of Alcatraz and Elmer Gantry are great. Love Burt. Thanks for the review
