The memes started because someone, or several someones, set the song to clips from Kingdom of Heaven and other films depicting the crusades. Either they missed the "It was 1527..." lyrics at the beginning, or the mention of "Castel St Angelo is waiting...", or they ignored that and went purely on the refrain.

I dont know about the Swiss guard, but i know in my country ( Portugal) The Templars there after the events in France, they just rebranded the institution. Instead of the Templar order they became the Order of Christ, very similar flag Often seen later on in Portuguese ships on the sails during the age of discovery, they were sponsors of many innovations and technologies about navigation at the time. You see the Templars were spread out across many countries in Europe, just because they were banned in France and excommunicated, the Order were still powerful, with military, and a banking system, from what i know those institutions in each country just rebranded the name, but kept doing its businesses
I don’t remember the very first Sabaton song that I listened to. I remember, I was into anime amv’s. And there was this playlist about high school fleet, which is a bunch of schoolgirls who learn operate military vessels. A lot of Sabaton songs were used in a playlist made of AMV’s. There was midway the last stand etc. Excellently made videos those ones. But I think that was my first exposure to sabaton. However, I noticed in the songs that they actually were mentioning dates, places or even people so went and did some research and found out about sabaton then.
