" Walk This Way' " was originally just an Aerosmith song in the 70s when it was initially released. This later collaboration with Run DMC revolutionised the music industry, bringing two cultures and styles of music together. Thanks again for this wonderful reaction to my suggestion!!!🙂
Wait . This Was Aerosmith Song Originally 🤯 Wow ! I Had No Clue . Although I Haven’t Heard The Original Version Yet . I Love How Both Aerosmith & Run DMC Came Together For This Legendary Collaboration . Thank You For Trusting Me With Your Request Paul 🙂
Yes, the song here is basically exactly as the original from early 70s Aerosmith. Just added the scratching and the rapping style, but words all original Aerosmith and instrumental all original. Run DMC had been sampling parts of it for awhile so eventually the two groups came together for this. Very funky song from Aerosmith. You should check out the original!
This not only brought hip-hop/rap more into the mainstream, it also basically resurrected Aerosmith's career! They were in a pretty defunct state until this video hit MTV. The success and debauchery they experienced in the 70's had done them in, but this video kick-started their career again.
I graduated in 1987. We had the best music. No one cared about color or genre. This song brought us all together. It was about having fun then. Its fun to watch the kids discover this. Our genration was cool.
The genius thing about this collaboration is the fact that when Hip Hop was just starting off in The Bronx in the late 70's, it was done at Block Parties where an MC would use percussive beats of popular songs and fade between them and eventually this turned into scratching. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of this and he said that he started off using Aerosmith records to scratch with.
The funny part is that DMC really didn't want to do this. He thought the idea was ridiculous. There's a great bit of interview here on YT where he tells the story and admits how wrong he was, because this really blew up!
Yes. This is an iconic moment in music. Rock radio stations didn't play rap. Rap radio stations didn't play rock. This really gave artists permission to experiment and step outside genre norms.
As a little black girl growing up when this came out - I was into punk rock and New age music - so I knew the lyrics to Aerosmith's Walk this way and my brothers were into the hip hop side. So, duets were a blast...
The real hero of this convergence of two styles is Producer Rick Rubin, who got the two groups together in the studio, and created this epic moment. Aerosmith had gone through a rough stretch for about five years, and Run DMC had been on the upswing, and then this happened. Good karma for both groups, and for the music industry as a whole. BTW, Aerosmith just announced their"Final" tour a couple of days ago, after 50 years on the road. I first saw them right after this album, "Toys In The Attic" was released, and a bunch of times since. Great energy.
This was released in 1986, in the same year Beastie Boys released their debut album "Licence to ill". On it, 2 of their most famous songs ever: "No sleep till Brooklyn" and "Fight for your right (to party)", which where also crossovers between rock and hip hop. In 1990 Public Enemy and Anthrax released "Bring the noise", a crossover-version of the PE song. And in he 90s a whole new genre was born which was a mix of Metal music and Hip Hop elements: Nu Metal, with bands like Papa Roach and Linkin Park. So yes, this collab was really ground breaking and influential.
Thank you, as important as this song was, too many people are ready to forget the Beastie Boys (they all want to remember Eminem as the first (only?) successful white 'rapper'). IF ONE artist was responsible for revolutionizing the genres together it was them.
It was awesome to see these two genres start grooving together back then. Thrash metal band Anthrax did the same with Public Enemy and the song "Bring the Noise"... Check that out as well.
We all knew it was groundbreaking, believe me. It was a huge hit. Aerosmith were already legends and Run DMC were big stars so this really started something.
I remember when this song came out. I was in grade school. Heavy metal was kinda over our heads and rap was only for the black kids. When this was all over MTV, my friends were all like, “what is this???!!!! Give us more!!!!” If you liked that, check out the collaboration of Public Enemy and Anthrax doing “Bring the Noize.” I was in high school when that came out. They set the precedents for metal/rap blends to come.
This is considered breaking down the wall or breaking the barriers between rap/hip hop/rock &roll. As someone who loved both types of music, this was incredible. The song was great but the meaning was soo much bigger. Great reaction. Btw Ive seen both in concert. Incredible.I really miss the old days but look forward to the future
I am pushing 80 years of age. I Texted the Run DMC/Aerosmith "Walk This Way" video to my grand-daughter ( in her early 20s ). She was familiar with DMC, but not Aerosmith. I told her that besides being nice to listen to, I loved the way their feelings went from dislike at the beginning to mutual appreciation and cooperation by the end.
I was a child, but my mother was a huge Aerosmith fan, and I would listen to this in the car, and it was my first introduction to Rap. I was 4 at the time, and growing up, I listened to both Rap and Rock in my years to 18, and never understood why so many people who liked ONE genre wouldn't even give the other a chance. Plus, this song was the first Rap song played on Rock stations at the time... which was a HUGE deal... and also, some would say, Revived Aerosmith's Carrier, and we see how much amazing music they did after this!
Run DMC and the Beastie boys (Kings, and the princes of rap) both came out around the same time, and this was DMC's biggest hit since My Addidas. Rap was just starting to be accepted in small areas around the country.
Being born in the late 60’s I’ve gotten the chance to enjoy all types of Great music but when we take 2 different types and join them and love this is the way we should all enjoy each other 😊
The single most important record in rap/hip hop. It tore down all the walls that separated rap and hip hop from mainstream radio and mainstream audiences.
Growing up never listened to rap until after this track..It was sort of the old school Rock introduced and welcomed rap to the mainstream for a lot of kids who didn't know any better. First time I heard it was like a religious experience, had my head phones on listening to local Rock radio. After it played they got so many requests, The DJ started playing it every hour on the hour. Us white kids had never heard something like that before...was magic
I will forever be grateful to RUN DMC for taking a chance on Aerosmith to do this video. Aerosmith was down and almost gone do mainly to substance abuse. RUN DMC helped bring them back.
back in the 80s we were breaking down walls and building unity, someone thought that wasn't the way to go. Kudos to Aerosmith and Run DMC trying to unite us.
You might also like "Bring the Noise" by Public Enemy and Anthrax! It's another rap/metal collaboration that happened around the same time as the Aerosmith/Run D.M.C one.
i remember one of the members of run dmc telling the story of how this came about and a lot of dj's in the 80's would play and mix the original at house parties and when their manager collabed with steve tyler he thought it was a joke at first and thought it would not mix well but in the end him and all the members knew they made history with this one song and blazed the trail for other artists to do it and i remember growing up when this song came out and we all knew the dance steps to it and i still know them till this day and steve taylor to this day says this is still one favorite collabes cause it brought one of their great songs to another audience in a new way
Run DMC was already doing rock/rap songs before this. Two albums before this. It was the actual collaboration and the VIDEO that took it to the next level. RUN DMC's star shot way up and AEROSMITH came back from the dead and had whole revival thanks to this song (Their song incidentally). I mean, it's basically a rap song as is - in it's original form. WIN/WIN for both groups. I was always surprised they never got back together to do another one. The whole "Raising Hell" album is great. Integral part of my high-school soundtrack. And I CAN confirm ... lots of rockers and even alt-rockers were into it at the time. Pretty cool.
I remember when this came out as a teenager. It was mind-blowing. But I also remember a couple of years before that when Mick Jagger said rap and rock could never mix. 😆
There's a great vid here on YT, part of an interview, where DMC tells the story of how this happened. It's really interesting, you should check it out! This was a groundbreaking video, I remember when it came out on MTV. Great stuff, I love how the mutual irritation eventually turns into appreciation between the two camps. :)
This was from Aerosmith’s TOYS IN THE ATTIC album from 1975 and I saw them in 1976 in San Antonio. Then this hit the airwaves in 1986 with MTV having it on often but it was what brought not only different cultures together but also different generations and it just felt good to jam to it.
It was really Rick Rubin who merged these two together especially since, RUN-DMC was originally not feeling the collaboration at all, but it was Rick Rubin who convinced RUN-DMC to go with it and basically the rest is history. That 10 to 12 second breakbeat from Walk this way by Aerosmith was definitely a breakbeat us Dj's used to cut up.
Yeah, this song is definitely proof. And very important, because like you said it paved the way. After this you had groups like Public Enemy redoing an older song by teaming up with a metal band. That eventually gave way to the rap-rock movement with bands like 311, P.O.D. and Rage Against The Machine, who just had straight-up rappers fronting them.
This song blew my mind as a kid hearing it on the radio. Both groups, instant favorites. I’m a white dude from Ohio and this rocked my suburban streets
"Walk this way" was originally a hit single by Aerosmith in 1975 from their 3rd album 'Toys in the attic'... it became Aerosmith's first platinum+ selling record. The title came from watching the movie 'Young Frankenstein' one night... there was a line in the movie, "Walk this way..."👹 In 1986, Run DMC was a rap group coming up in the scene and working w/ Def Jam producer Rick Rubin... (the late DJ) Jam Master Jay had come across the record 'Toys in the attic' and sampled the opening beat to 'Walk this way' for a new track... Rubin heard the track and knew the Aerosmith record; he suggested that Run DMC cover 'Walk this way'... Now, none of the 3 members of Run DMC knew the song or Aerosmith's music... and when they read the lyrics, they refused. "HELL NO!" Still, Rick Rubin contacted Aerosmith about using the sample and asked them to meet w/ Run DMC... Now, Aerosmith in 1986 were a commercial failure at that point... the original band had split w/ their guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford between 1979 and 1981, and Aerosmith was literally touring clubs in 1983... They reunited the original Aerosmith for a 1984 tour and finally made some money. But the band's 1985 album 'Done with mirrors' was a flop, and Aerosmith desperately needed a hit single... plus, their managers decided that they needed to get the entire band clean from drug & alcohol abuse, because they were a mess... So, Steven Tyler (vocals) and Joe Perry (guitar) went to meet Run DMC in a studio... they saw the 3 guys hunched over a table and assumed that they were doing drugs... But when they got closer, they saw Run DMC eating McDonald's fast food 🤣🤣 Steven Tyler explained to Run DMC that 'Walk this way' was about his first sexual encounter in a threesome w/ 2 honeyz 😂That sold the group on covering the track... They became friends and also did the music video together. Run DMC's cover of 'Walk this way' became a huge hit in 1986, crossing over the rock and rap genres for the first time and gave Aerosmith MTV exposure for the first time ever... As a result, Run DMC had the biggest record of their career ('Raising hell') and Aerosmith's career was resurrected in 1987, when their next album 'Permanent vacation' sold 5x platinum in the US. In 2002, Run DMC did their final tour opening for Aerosmith... after the murder of Jam Master Jay that year, the group was over... Aerosmith has always credited Run DMC for giving back their popularity in the 80's after years of decline since the 70's.
I'm happy to see that you enjoyed this unique fusion of genres. I you'd like to hear more of it, you might want to check out the Anthrax-Public Enemy collab 'Bring the Noise'
Love it! Brings me back to Wynnbrook Elementary School 5th grade…RUN DMC fan and when this song came out..😮 It changed a lot of peoples minds on Rock and Rap!!! My Adidas 👟❤❤🙏🏻
Great reaction, I’ve been waiting for you to get to this one I knew it was coming:). This moment was quite revolutionary at a time when hip hop was struggling to get air time on MTV this performance really opened it up
I've been listening to Aerosmith since high school back in early seventies. They ruled the airwaves for years. The eighties came along and drugs, personalities and infighting kinda set them back. Their album sales weren't that great, although that had a few hits, to keep their label happy. So a stint in rehab and a genius idea spawned this. They had a second life into the nineties with a number of hits and stilk tour to this day.
Most of their stuff after Toys in The Attic were complete Trash. I mean. Really trash. Like.....If it wasn't the 80s, nobody listens to this stuff anymore trash.
'The Magnificent Seven' by The Clash is kind of overlooked. Great reaction, you were as excited as I still am after all these years. Steven Tyler acknowledges that it saved his career. I say it proves Rock 'n' Roll and Hip-Hop actually BELONG together.
One of the best collaborations between rock & hip hop!! It was a huge success and I really love the music video! Kinda crushing on Steven Tyler, tho!! TY 👟👟 “Walk this way”
This song had already been a hit for Aerosmith dating back to its 1975 release on their iconic Toys in the Attic album. Run-DMC did a great job with keeping the beat on track so that the guitar blended smoothly with their version. If yo want to see another crossover like this you should check out the Anthrax and Public Enemy collaboration of Public Enemy's Bring the Noise. You might also enjoy Anthrax doing their own fun rap song, they were fans of rap and just wanted to have fun, called I'm the Man.
Wooow you miaa came across Legends Aerosmith and Run DMC collaborating to one another with Rap and Rock this was Awesome 👍 on Aerosmith Original song Walk This Way
I believe run DMC originally just came out with their own hip-hop version of it, but at DJ somewhere got the idea to mix Aerosmith and Run-DMC together and the rest is history.
Aerosmith's was rapping when they originally released this song back in 1975. BTW, Steven Tyler has a daughter named Mia. I remember waterskiing with her and Steven Tyler's ex-wife Cyrinda Foxe when I lived at their house on the shore of Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire back in the mid-80's. I never got to meet Steven, but I lived in his house. Still seems crazy to me after all these years. Sadly, Cyrinda passed away from a battle with brain cancer several years ago.
Really? Wow , I Had No Clue . This Comment Is Super Informative , Thank You For All This Info . Steven Tyler Named His Daughter Such A Beautiful Name 🥰 Wow , That’s Too Cool !! You Used To Waterskiing With Mia & Her Mom !! That’s The Coolest Thing To Me , What A Memory To Share 😊 And Living In Their House 🤯 That’s Bananas !! Rest In Peace To Cyrinda Foxe , That’s Devastating 🕊️
This was so 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥, and and Steven Tyler and the guys from Aerosmith was kinda of blowing back up after having a stellar 1970’s , this was right on time in the 80’s!
Rick Ruban was the genius. He produced it and brought them together. I remember when this came out. I was a 10th grader. :D | You need to check out the version of Bring the Noise by Public Enemy and Anthrax. Now that was a thing.
" Walk This Way' " was originally just an Aerosmith song in the 70s when it was initially released. This later collaboration with Run DMC revolutionised the music industry, bringing two cultures and styles of music together. Thanks again for this wonderful reaction to my suggestion!!!🙂

It was pretty good. It was like one of the first meeting of the groups.

Yeah that makes sense, Aerosmith / Tyler were just as influenced by funk master James Brown as they were by the British blues rock.

In 2002, Run DMC did their final tour opening for Aerosmith... after the murder of Jam Master Jay that year, the group was over... Aerosmith has always credited Run DMC for giving back their popularity in the 80's after years of decline since the 70's.
Yes they were Pioneers
I'm happy to see that you enjoyed this unique fusion of genres. I you'd like to hear more of it, you might want to check out the Anthrax-Public Enemy collab 'Bring the Noise'
I LOVED this collaboration as a kid. 5 years later, Public Enemy & Anthrax followed suit w/ Bring The Noise 😊
They are two of the best in their Logue that why they worked out together so well
Yep that one is amazing🍻
One of the best collaborations between rock & hip hop!! It was a huge success and I really love the music video! Kinda crushing on Steven Tyler, tho!! TY 👟👟 “Walk this way”
Dope.. video joined perfectly to the piece to breaking down walls in society ❤
Born in 50's, great show.
Loved it Mia😊
Thank You Patty 🙂
Hip hop use so many rock riffs and always have, you'd be amazed how much rock music has been sampled or riffs have been used by hip hop acts.
Incredible
Rap Rock goodness.
Wooow you miaa came across Legends Aerosmith and Run DMC collaborating to one another with Rap and Rock this was Awesome 👍 on Aerosmith Original song Walk This Way
Aerosmith featuring RUN DMC!
I believe run DMC originally just came out with their own hip-hop version of it, but at DJ somewhere got the idea to mix Aerosmith and Run-DMC together and the rest is history.
You are correct
I remember when this song came out . I had heard of Run DMC , had no idea who Aerosmith were or that this was their song .
Was she the mother of Liv?
Really? Wow , I Had No Clue . This Comment Is Super Informative , Thank You For All This Info .
Steven Tyler Named His Daughter Such A Beautiful Name 🥰
Wow , That’s Too Cool !!
Yep …. Genius 🤘
Rick Ruban was the genius. He produced it and brought them together. I remember when this came out. I was a 10th grader. :D |
You need to check out the version of Bring the Noise by Public Enemy and Anthrax. Now that was a thing.
Truly a musical "You got your chocolate in my peanut butter" moment!
