I was 13 years-old when this song came out. If I remember correctly, most of these legends came from an awards show, and spent the whole night into the dawn, recording this song. All for free. Such a beautiful mix of different genres, voices and cultures.❤

Another thing that happened was "Hands Across America". Literally a chain of people holding hands across the country. I believe they did every state but I'm not completely sure of that. It was an incredibly emotional moment. Hundreds of people showed up EVERY where when the chain was coming near them. I seem to remember that the chain was broken in a few places, mostly rural places that didn't have much of a population but that was it. I'm really proud of being part of that.

A very telling fact, Michael Jackson was the ONLY artist under 30 (age 27). Most were over 40. This is a time when looks meant almost nothing. These were true musicians, singers, and artists who spent decades of blood, sweat, tears, and true talent to make some if the best songs and music. Even MJ had over 2 decades of hard work and experience by that time.
Sadly, we will NEVER see a collection of great musical artists ever again. Today it is more looks and promotion than talent and hard work.
Good news is today marks the 38th Anniversary of this legendary recording. Yep, it all happened in the evening of January 28th, 1985
He was 26...early 1985.....truly a talent ...and like you said...he was the youngest and still had 20 years experience....the youngest person in terms of their career was Cyndi... everyone else was vets and in some cases already legends....such as the oldest Ray....who I thought was like 100 years old when I was a kid...he turned 55 that year......my sister is 55 now.....she graduated in from high school in '85....a trip
..and the age thing should have meant nothing!! Todays generation doesn’t seem to know that. There is less appreciation and acknowledgment of the greatest of the past musically 😊

This was one of the biggest charity songs that still resonates with me.
I'd seen the documentary for this song not too long ago, and it is fascinating. The only way to gather all artists into one recording studio to record a song was after an awards ceremony where many artists gathered. After the American Music Awards in '85 the artists shown made their way to A&M studios in Hollywood. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, all artists were given a demo made by Jackson prior to the awards ceremony. Everyone had a feel for the song, but no solo parts were planned until they'd all arrived in the studio. That was when the brilliance of Qunicy Jones took over. Everyone worked through the night, and I do recall seeing Diana Ross sitting in a fetal position from exhaustion. In the end, the artists wound up leaving the studio around 8:30 the next morning! This truly showed that hard work paid off, and the rest is history.
Bruce Springsteen was the last one to do the solo. Quincy said that Bruce was one of the hardest working musicians that he ever met. The day before Bruce did a 4-hour concert with the E-Street Band. Bruce said that the band came on at 10:30 that night and got off at about 2 in the morning. He then had to eat a lot at the after party. He was in New York. He then had to fly to L.A. He said that he never even slept on the plane. And he then went to the American Music Awards that night, And he went to do the song after that in his truck. When he did his solo it was 6 in the morning. Then he had to fly back east to do a concert that night. He might have been up over 72-hours.
I too enjoyed the documentary and gained an even greater appreciation for each of these amazing. singers! ♥️
Great Song, but it also raised over 60 million dollars to help fight famine in Ethiopia. It's Amazing what us humans can do when we pull together. We need more of that in today's world. ✌️~n~ ♥️

They never get mentioned but I understand that some are to young to know I appreciate you for this reaction my mom passed away from Covid Complications and I cry every time I hear this it reminds me of my childhood I remember the day it aired March 28th 1985 I was 9 years old and the world 🌎 was like it stopped there will never be a collection of talent like this ever in life they do have a recent one for Haiti 🇭🇹 but it ain’t nowhere near this caliber of talent

The level of talent in that room was amazing and legendary, and yet legends like Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston , Madonna , Prince(he was invited but didn’t come, Luther Vandross, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty and others were not there. We were so spoiled with so much talent that an event like this could be done, it was so well received and well respected at the same time. It was truly a legendary historical moment!
Whitney was not yet a legend because her debut album came out later that year.....crazy right?

This was when I was a teen. I am amazed of how many people know all of these stars, and what time they came on the video. Yes, it does cause an emotional reaction since they were raising aid for African children who were going through a famine.

I was 14 when this song came out and all of these artists were at the top of their game. If you think this is amazing now it was that much more amazing at the time of it's release. I think we need the current batch of artist to do something like this now to try to heal the division in our world.

I feel the only reason this one came together is because of who put it together. I mean, who would say NO to Qunicy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie. Those 3 made this event happen. Quincy Jones even put a sign over the door to the studio that read "CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR" because he wanted them all to realize that this was not about themselves, but about putting together something special that would beniefit the needy people in Africa. Every one of these singers is a LEGEND in their own right. But to me, STEVIE WONDER killed it! To me, he sings with more passion, emotion, and soul than anyone out there. Just my opinion. This was shot and recorded in the early morning after an award show. These artists volunteered their time for the cause. MJ came up with the idea and Lionel Richie wrote the song. Quincy Jones directed and produced. Sad part is that we lost more than half of these artists
A correction is necessary.... This project was not Michael Jackson's idea. The legendary Harry Belafonte, an amazing singer, actor, humanitarian, and civil rights activist, was moved by the images he saw of those suffering in the famine in Africa. He had an idea he took to talent manager Ken Kragen about a benefit concert with the top stars, and Kragen suggested a recording be put together instead of a concert. They sought out Quincy Jones to produce and direct the project.
Quincy, who of course had worked with MJ on a number of his albums and had worked with Lionel Richie, assigned the writing of the song to Michael and Lionel. Most of the various singers and musicians who were brought on board to take part were expecting to be in town at the same time to attend the American Music Awards Show. They agreed to forego the customary after-show parties and gather and work through the night to record their solo and choral parts together. And magic happened.
It is a good thing to know how the project actually came about. There are several videos about the development of the USA for Africa project and how the song was recorded, as well as countless articles detailing the events, and there is coverage in Wikipedia and on other online resources.
It's sad though that many fans just make assumptions about Michael's involvement. MJ thought of and directed several other projects, but this one was not his idea.
His contribution was invaluable as a co-writer of the song "We Are The World" and his name recognition with the public and his participation with the other stars really helped the promotion of song and album to fundraise for the famine relief.
However, everyone who gave their names, their time, and their talents to the project and the compassion behind it, did it not for the spotlight, but to help others who were starving and in dire need. The most important things are the help it generated for those people and the impact it brought to the human spirit, not just in the U.S., but around the world... evoking a generosity and connection this world needs now more than ever.
God bless people like Belafonte, and Michael, and Lionel, and Stevie, and Ray, and Springsteen, and Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, and all the other singers and musicians who took part.
Bless those, too, who supplied studio space, equipment and other production needs, radio and TV coverage, promotion, and so forth. May the countless others be blessed who bought the record with the song or the whole album that was produced, or who were moved to donate monies for relief of the hungry and suffering in Africa during that time.

At the time, of course, we were all overwhelmed by the flood of emotion unleashed by such a collection of talent, and more, SKLL, all together, just as you were. All these years later, what i keep trying to imagine is what it must have felt like,for each of them, to be a part of such a performance, among so many legends. It must have been very humbling.

You will never see this again, it's different damn world now. at each others throats so the rich can divide the spoils. My cousin went to school with Stevie Wonder at the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing MI. Cindy Lauper, with the colorful hair, just blows my mind. Stevie and Ray too. I am 52 years old and have heard this song sooooooooooo many times and I STILL get chills every single time I hear it!!! It was THE most epic collaboration in music history and I feel extremely blessed that I grew up in that decade! I'm so glad to see this still touches people the way I see that it has touched you. I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of the 1996, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it is been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the Americans awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented by Jane Fonda) that shows that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.

In 1984/85 Africa, specifically Etheopia. There was a severe drought and people were dying by the millions from famine. This song was made to help out Africa. If you notice there is absolutely no racism here. No segregation, no egos. People with nothing but respect for each other and helping out a terrible tragedy. This is how we should be as human beings. People helping people. Everyone here is a true legend.

I was 18 when this hit the waves. Seeing all of them together is just like a time jump for me. You could not do anything like this today: In the making of this song, you had White, Black and Asian singers. Rock, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Blues, and Country singers, Christians, Pagans and Jews. Heterosexual and Homosexual singers. All coming together and giving their all to better the world. You try doing this today and the "hate" will be slinging hate before they even get past the studio doors.

One example of the brilliant production of Quincy jones. He puts voices together like instruments in an orchestra. A timeless message, much needed today. This song should be a daily vitamin for every person in the us. The energy would shift overnight. If you haven't done it yet, check out another of his classics called The Secret Garden. 🔥🙏💞 Importantly, the song was done for the specific purpose of raising money to help other people in need.
13 when this song dropped after the Grammys show. It's ALL we talked about the next day at school, and i can't remember how long afterwards. This song was a part of so many school programs and impromptu lunch concerts. What a time it was ❤
This came up in my feed so I decided to give it a look. I appreciate your reaction and I understand how it touched you emotionally. This is something, an event, that sadly we may never see again and that's tragic. I graduated high school in 1982 so this was blasted all over MTV and we all were star struck seeing if we could name all the singers and celeb's in the video. It didn't matter if you were a rocker, new wave or into hiphop...everyone appreciated the effort they put into this.
This was back in a time when we did not have social media, cell phones so there was always one house we all went to and watched the new music videos, you could tell the house cause of all the beach cruisers and skateboards out front! Such fond memories and watching this and your reaction stirred those up again. Thank you for that. With all that said, my favorite singer in this? Steve Perry! Look him up, lead singer for many years under Journey then a fantastic solo career.

I was 9 when this came out. It was such a huge event. I remember every top of the hour on MTV they played this song. Now im someone who is a classic rock/ metal fan and this is one of the most inspirational songs ever. One of the few songs that make me cry. ❤❤
