Lars greatest strength musically was always in informing the arrangement of the songs. Without his input classic songs would have been mediocre to lame. That said he could continue to do that and have a much gnarlier drummer write and play drum parts and Metallicas metal cred would be higher.

I was at this gig. It's the only time I've ever seen Metallica, and it was awesome because Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, and Lars's drum tech played the entire show, and none of them knew any of the recent bad Metallica songs, so it was all Black Album and earlier. If you were gonna see Metallica after about 1993, this was the show to catch, man.
Joey was a really astonishing person. He probably enjoyed this stage more than Metallica itself. Was huge fan of them - and the only one with the guts to play with them when the official drummer wasn't available. I still think god ass is shaking every night over his pieces in heaven while he stages.
Hes just an outstanding drummer and incredibly professional. How many great bands he has covered, how many slipknot songs he has written. So well respected and rightly so. Basically the drummers choose the songs / set list, due to what they knew to could play at short notice. There were about 4 drummers who played in total. Amazing gig glad I was there.
The dynamics are so dramatically different. It's so interesting to hear his style with this band. When they were rehearsing this with Joey, I'm sure Kirk probably said. " It's the double kicks in between that are fucking with me".
To "true" metal fans he may not be in the top of the crop of drummers, but for someone who Joey was his "get your feet wet" into the world of metal. Watching this video gives me so much joy knowing how much this ment to him. RIP Joey Jordison and forever will be you be included in my list.🤘🤘

In some parts, Joey was trying his best to keep them all together at a steady tempo, but he was forced to adjust to keep in time with them. Yea I don’t like trashing Lars but they do sound stronger than normal here, there’s no denying it
Lars greatest strength musically was always in informing the arrangement of the songs. Without his input classic songs would have been mediocre to lame. That said he could continue to do that and have a much gnarlier drummer write and play drum parts and Metallicas metal cred would be higher.
Metallica with a drummer wow
Jajaja man. That shit was funny!
Savage
If only he did this with megadeth instead
@@deivyleon409 Dirk Verbeuren is even better than Joey man, have you even heard Soilwork?
@@deivyleon409 ew
This was a true life “Rockstar” moment. RIP Joey
Yeah its almost like Joey's own personal encore performance. So sick.
Joey's version of Creeping Death is my all time favorite! Also, I can't help but smile when James can't stop himself from chuckling from Joey's drumming in Seek And Destroy... man, I wish I was at that concert!
RIP Joey, One of the greatest drummers of all time
Lars' drum kit is still going through therapy after this. Never knew it could be played in such a way 🤘
lars should be metallica's manager
he cant drum anymore.
Erick Thor You really wanna go there? He can still play songs alrighty, though he needs some massaging after conserts. The only thing that has deranged in his playing is the intensity, he is quite old and can't hit the drums as hard as he did, though in drums hitting everything as hard as possible isn't necessary, tempo and good groove is the base, though FUCK Lars doesn't care much about tempo.
you know.. i can see that happening.. i believe there will come a time when lars wants to call it quits on drums and but james and rob keep will going.. not sure about kirk with his dementia..
@@_Only_Zuul kirk has dementia?
Pretty sure he is or was at some point.
Watching Joey play in Metallica is incredible in itself, but what we are actually seeing is a dream of his childhood come to life right before our eyes. Absolute Legend. #1 whether it's this world or the next that the 'wind spills before him'.
I love/ respect that joey doesn't push the boundaries of Metallica too much, how ever is able to put forth his own signature sound. Joey, wherever you now brother thank for being there for us, and setting the tempo. I love you bro
22:20 Joey you rock! Thank you!
RIP Joey Jordison ❤
1:10 For whom the Bell Tolls
7:35 Creeping Death
15:20 Seek and Destroy
I was at this gig. It's the only time I've ever seen Metallica, and it was awesome because Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, and Lars's drum tech played the entire show, and none of them knew any of the recent bad Metallica songs, so it was all Black Album and earlier. If you were gonna see Metallica after about 1993, this was the show to catch, man.
Proud to say I was there. What a privilege 👏 RIP Joey
Why did they have Joey play instead of lars?
@@RETIREDAMATUERLars was at the hospital
Drums on creeping death sound amazing...
The should have played it faster than usual to keep up with joey. And for god sakes we need jasons backing vocals.
@@dancingbear614 I miss Jason!
It´s weird but it sounds better with Lars.
@@leatherandtactel You think it does
@@psychosis345 I think it does, and at the same time, it does. It´s a happy coincidence.
Joey was a really astonishing person.
He probably enjoyed this stage more than Metallica itself.
Was huge fan of them - and the only one with the guts to play with them when the official drummer wasn't available.
I still think god ass is shaking every night over his pieces in heaven while he stages.
Dave lombardo also did a couple of songs with them on this set
Here after he passed away. Rest In Peace Joey🤟
Pretty amazing how he managed to fit in so good and stay fresh without practice before with the band, almost staight after his own show with Slipknot.
I salute you, fellow NeO fan
He’s just a genuine good drummer ahah
He's metallica fan since he's a kid. He once said that he wouldn't be the drummer he is if there was no metallica. He knows every song
Hes just an outstanding drummer and incredibly professional. How many great bands he has covered, how many slipknot songs he has written.
So well respected and rightly so.
My number 1 drummer of all time and if he is not yours, he is certainly in the conversation.
Lars is so bad 😂 all the years practice as we. Probably why he is so mad all the time.
This was like the most flawless performance of Seek they have EVER played!
Is sad when they are so used to Lars and his horrendous tempo, and when a drummer plays the song in tempo, they cant follow. Joey is spot on and Metallica is rushing the beat. Damn.
lxl KHARMA lxl wtf do you expect lars couldnt do the show
nah prob. because they are used to doing bit fast
Metallica speed up their songs live because half their songs are 8 minutes long. Theyd be doing half day concerts if they didnt lmao
Also why they cut parts of songs, like intros and fills and such.
e115x525 You have no idea what you’re talking about. Rushing a song will shorten by max 20 secs. Over a course of a show that’s 5 mins
Best drummer Metallica has ever had
joey jordison is the reason why i love heavy metal, you can see he didnt want to steal the limelight he can play harder than that, no hair flicking just loving music and doing what he does best. gives me goose bumps everytime i watch or listen to joey. miss you all the way from the land down under Australia
Rest In Peace Joey Jordison… You were a truly talented and gifted drummer 🥀
The band honestly looks like they're having a blast with him on the drums. Laughing and smiling instead of looking pissed off and shaking their heads.
I've seen this so many times and I still get chills. Metallica is my favorite band I could never imagine playing drums for them...Joey's gone but definitely not forgotten
What a weird sensation, so sad that Joey passed away, this concert is so nostalgic and awesome. RIP legend.
The night Metallica realised what they could've been
Great comment!
What! Be even bigger! 😆😆😆😆😆
This is quiet possibly the dumbest comment on this entire website. Congratulations.
Metallica would be 100000% the greatest band of all time with cliff still on bass and joey on drums
Nah, if I know correctly, Lars helped with so much of the sonwriting of metallica. And I personally think that Lars' style fits Metallica.
I love how he still has his mask on, Iconic.
Imagine how awesome it must feel to play a song with your favorite band
i know lars is his influences but im never know jordison favourite band is metallica
Ask Jay weinberg, he can answer that
James face at 10:26 hahahha "That´s some fast mother+8(=%/ "
Yeah i could be doing this every day ;)
Thank you Lars for being in the hospital that night and we all have the opportunity to enjoy the 🐐 Joey. unwittingly you gave the world this unforgettable life experience
One of the best crossovers in anime history
Not a good idea choosing a mid tempo song like Bells for Joey. Should've chosen Dyers Eve, so we could finally see the double bass for once.
They literally didnt play Dyers eve live until later that year yet though.
Basically the drummers choose the songs / set list, due to what they knew to could play at short notice. There were about 4 drummers who played in total. Amazing gig glad I was there.
Robert Dingley 3, it consisted of dave, joey, and flemming larsen, the drum roadie
Actıally, they asked Joey which songs u know? And want to play, creep and bells was his choose
This song would fit lombardo better i think. Lombardo can thrash and do mid tempos. Lombardo can pretty much do anything
The dynamics are so dramatically different. It's so interesting to hear his style with this band. When they were rehearsing this with Joey, I'm sure Kirk probably said. " It's the double kicks in between that are fucking with me".
Lmao underrated
The comments section is just everyone hating on Lars..
IKR
( I love it) 🤣
As it should be
Haha because he's a fuckwit.
Get what he fucking deserves
With good reason
You got to see Joey’s skills on full display. Absolute command of the tempo and skilled drumming to go along with it. RIP to a legend
#1 for a damn good reason. My absolute favorite drummer ever. An absolute mythical legend, Joey Jordison. Rock in Power
joey straight killed it. awesome show all around
18:23 omg!!! sounds cool
Love that drum solo in Seek and Destroy (until about 18:40) - gives me goose bumps. Awesome!
JJ was undoubtedly one the greatest drummers of all time. He’s now apart of the pantheon of drummer gods may he Rest In Peace
The world has lost a truly great man. RIP Joey you magnificent bastard!
Love how Joey adds his own tone to the second song, a lot of Double bass kicking while playing the song great 👍🏻
To "true" metal fans he may not be in the top of the crop of drummers, but for someone who Joey was his "get your feet wet" into the world of metal. Watching this video gives me so much joy knowing how much this ment to him.
RIP Joey Jordison and forever will be you be included in my list.🤘🤘
The first time I've heard Metallica play with a drummer
I think your device doesn't support drumming or what
Joey put the “metal” back in Metallica that night.
Rest In Peace Joey 😞
"Metal"*
Couldn't be more true. James' happiness that night don't lie. RiP Joey
10:32 - James' smile says everything about Joey's playing with them.
the best version of Creeping Death ever! Amazing Joey , i can not stop listen it
Making Joey play For Whom The Bell Tolls is like using Excalibur to cut bread
More like Joey getting to play For Whom the Bell Tolls with Metallica is like him ripping Excalibur from the stone and immediately using it to cleave a mountain in half in a flash of otherworldly light leaving Merlin speechless.
This is the first time I’ve ever heard this and how amazing!! I first saw Slipknot at a nightclub after they had released their self titled album. Joey was the most talented member of Slipknot as well as one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. I’m so glad that he got to play with Metallica before he got sick. He killed it!! Poor Lars was probably almost out of a job after missing only one night 😂
It's weird seeing metallica play with a competent drummer. Rest in Peace Joey.

This is one of Metallica's greatest performances. Joey nailed it on every song he did. One of the greatest drummers of all time. He made all musicians he jammed with sound way better. Rest in peace Joey.
This is definitely nowhere near their best performance
DOUBLE KICK IN METALLICA? GODDAMN JOEYYYY RIP BROTHER

In some parts, Joey was trying his best to keep them all together at a steady tempo, but he was forced to adjust to keep in time with them. I think he did a great job, and I like how he improvised on the rolls and fills. I think Dave Lombardo had more success keeping the overall tempo steady on Battery and Four Horsemen. Always my favourite thrash drummer ever!
Lombardo probably is the best thrash metal drummer... followed near by Benante.
one of the best drummers ever lived, rip joey
That feeling how the drums should sound in Metallica.... Bravo!
