- Joey Jordison was one of the most influential drummers in metal history. And he was arguably one of the top drummers of all time.
As the founding sticksman of Slipknot, he inspired thousands of metalheads around the world to learn the drums.
His insane skills, his showmanship, his masks, his gear…he was just cool.
In this video, Ash Pearson of Revocation talks about why Joey Jordison was, truly, number one.

Joey didn’t just pull ideas from metal. For example, in the chorus of “Wait And Bleed”, he created a groove with the snare and rack tom - not a common choice in the genre, but a great one. The iconic intro from “Duality” is one of the most recognizable metal drum parts out there. The kick pattern fits the riff perfectly. In “All Hope Is Gone”, the double kick matches the guitar part nicely and the fills carry over the bar line (a very Ulrich move).

5:25 -- Playing with large bands
It’s tough enough to coordinate playing styles, creativity, and personalities in a three or four piece band. With nine members in Slipknot, Joey knew how and when to simplify his parts to elevate his bandmates’ parts.
Not every musician is willing to put aside the ego and do what’s best for the music, but check out “Liberate”, “My Plague,” and “Duality” for examples of how he’d leave breaks in the drumming where it made sense.
There’s a lot every drummer can learn from Joey Jordison.

Joey played at blazing tempos with precision. He’d also combine a lot of ideas in a short period of time when the song called for it, like the combo of thrash beats, blast beats, fills, and double bass in “Disasterpiece”. He also nailed the fast tom patterns in “Tattered & Torn”.

Gotta be his gig with Metallica. His ability to adapt to a very different kind of metal was exceptional and he also proved that he was a better drummer for Metallica than Lars with one bloody show. Long live Number 1! Oh yeah and the spinning drum kit!🤟
And he did it all with a mask, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants. That's all I can think about when I watch him drum. It makes me sweat just watching.

The man's movements were so clean it made him look like a robot. As a drummer, Joey's passing was the most difficult celebrity death that actually affected me emotionally. R.I.P.
How did he die? Just recently starting to really listening to them. His drumming is amazing.

For me it was Chris Cornell first that really hit me hard, as I grew up a massive fan of both Soundgarden and Audioslave, and I honestly didn't think any other celeb could hit me that hard until Joey passed followed by Chester 2 months later.
The greatest drummers in history are the ones who are pulling off what sounds like the impossible while being able to play without destroying the song. Just about every great band who's climbed to the top of their music style has had a drummer who has led the way.

@@spranckx David isn't mentioned enough. The drumming on Korn's first two albums is out of this world. Funky, catchy, and hard hitting. Haven't heard another drummer play with that style since, which shows the creativity.
Joey and David were both my favorite drummers growing up, amazingly talented musicians.
His drumming is so technical while he hits the drums super hard and I have no idea how he did it throughout his whole life. RIP Joey

It's rather thrashy compared to Slipknot, but dude was hella clean and definitely would give Joey a run for his money in terms of headbanging. 😅

That intro is one of the best drum patterns I ever heard in a song ever.
This was my exact experience watching Disasterpieces for the first time. I actually bought that DVD before I had ever listened to either Iowa or the band's debut album and was absolutely blown away by Joey. I couldn't believe that he could play with such vitality, precision, and technical mastery song after song after song. There's a moment during "Liberate" where he tosses his stick up in the air just as Corey says, "I can't see from here, but I can smell your fear" and catches it before slamming into the next groove that I must have rewound and watched 100,000 times. Words like "legend" are reserved for people like Joey.
I remember meeting Joey when I was like 5 years old (I’m 16) and I can still hear the subtle joy in his voice when I ran up in my little jumpsuit and mask, he gave me a high five before we left. I remember the day I found out he passed, it crushed me to the bottom of heart. We’ll always miss #1

As a teenager, I couldn't work out why Joey always sounded different to me than a lot of other drummers. I think it's because he had a musicality to his playing that you don't often see.
The Eyeless intro will always be one of my very favourite drum fills ever, ever. Rip Joey, you inspired a generation

Eyeless was what got me into Slipknot, in large part to Joey’s playing… of course Disasterpiece is also just a freaking feat! The guy set a high bar for drummers in heavy metal

I'll never forget watching him spin in the air drumming like a madman live. Truly one of a kind. I feel lucky to have grown up in the era I did. I got to see him and slip 6x in my life.
Pledge Of Allegiance tour back in 2002. Slipknot, Rammstein & System of a Down. 'Knot was touring Iowa & I watched Joey do the aerial spinning drum solo as well. Unforgettable concert. Best I've ever been to

Watching him play Disasterpieces live while spinning around on the pentagram. Followed by the "not until I say, Jump the fuck up" If you've ever been in the Zero Bullshit, you know what I'm talking about. Going to a Slipknot concert in the 2000s was a life changing experience. He's the reason I started drumming and started listening to heavier metal. It was heartbreaking to hear he died on my birthday man... I'll never forget when he threw his drumstick to me in Toronto. Your spirit lives on through us all! Us maggots never truly die, because one simple fact. You cannot kill what you did not create. Stay (sic) everyone.
I saw Slipknot and Shadows Falls in 2004 or 5. The Subliminal Verses tour, one of the best concert experiences I've ever been too. Had a friend go see them recently and they don't do the spinning drum solos anymore. It will never be the same without Joey.

Saw him live 3 times with slipknot. One show he played a complete solo with his drum set lifted in the air, inverted, and spinning around. Another show they were playing SIC and his drum kit once again went way up in the air and spun around inverted. Amazing drummer and an amazing person.
Saw them once and his drum solo was unbelievable! I rem him being lifted, if that wasn’t enough inverted then the spinning!! And remember his setup having so many drums….was in awe!!!

Mr. Jordison is one of the most recognized drummers ever and somehow still underrated. I can't even fathom writing these songs. It's otherworldly to me.
I am surprised that you did not talk about his incredible performance with Metallica. I am not fan of Slipknot myself, but that concert with Metallica was one of the best ever. Being in a band and playing most of the songs of another band and live, is a real genius.
Not to mention they played more songs then he practiced for with them in that set time.
Impressive to fill in with that many songs, but then again what he plays on drums in Slipknot vs what he would have to play for Metallica… not even close 😂😂

Joey and The Rev are what got me into taking drums more seriously when I was a teenager and it's such a bummer to realize that the guys you looked up to musically and helped you discover a life-long love are both gone

13 years ago I was shocked with Rev. If I'm still drumming to this day, it is because of him. And Joey passing away shocked me again after all these years. Feeling the same after all these years where you were just a kid who is passionate about drums 13 years ago really hits me to the bottom of my heart.
RIP both, legendary drummers who were able to touch millions of lives in their short existence.

What I admired the most about Joey is the fact that he stayed humble. He stayed looking out for other bands on a big and small scale. Dude had so much knowledge and passionate for music. Quiet spirit with such a bright light…excuse me…😭🤧❤️

In my opinion, Joey’s drums on Til We Die just add more of an emotional feel and sound to the song. The song is very underrated and even not known to some. Joey was a great part of metal history. RIP #1

Joey truly was the reason that the nu metal scene incorporated some death metal drumming and technicality. I don't know which song it was but I think "wait and bleed" was one of the first songs I've heard combined with "left behind". Joey truly was a drummer that kept pushing forward and was looking for the extreme in every corner of the history of drums. He loved bands like satyricon, deicide and some grindcore stuff and you can really hear how he worshipped this kind of music. He understood music as an all in all package and really wrote songs within songs on his drum kit. It inspired me to strife towards this extremity in music and pushed my imagination to the limit of what a drummer can actually create.

Slipknot, as they got older leaned more and more towards Thrash & Death Metal. Not a Thrash or Death Metal Band as such, but my God they really do have A LOT of both Thrash & Death Metal in there, undeniably; harmonised tremolo riffs with blast beats/long double kick runs, multiple vocals ( high and low) & with sweep picked shred solos is pretty Death Metal if ya ask me.
His double kick was so clean too!
I believe that a significant part of Slipknot's success is JJ's playing and his genius in composing

As a D&B head/DJ and massive Metal fan, hearing him play over that amen break Sid lays down on Eyeless still, 20 years later, amps me the hell up.

Watching Joey play Disasterpiece was THE reason I picked up the sticks. Eyeless, Liberate and Eeyore were my favourite songs to play on the drums. Not only a lot of technicality, but a huge amount of emotion to be felt when playing. I was gutted when he was fired from Slipknot, I never listened to any of their new stuff after that. His passing genuinely hurt, such a huge inspiration taken way too young.
I'm so glad Ash is guiding us through Joey, two great drummers.
Makes me tear up a little. Joey was really a special part of drum history. Anyone who thinks differently needs a foot up their no no hole.
More than just drum history, the history of metal, his passion for it and to explore it, the murderdolls was a very fun way to get into metal when they, the more brutal slipknot, his look and style, I think a lot of people would not of discovered metal without him, his mark on the genre is an enormous one.

You're not going to find me praising his skills, he was mediocre. What he and Slipknot did was resurrect metal from one foot in the grave. I don't give two shits if you think otherwise, all opinions being such, but it's fact that he reignited a whole generation of drummers to go metal. Slipknot as the whole brought so many people in to extreme metal as a gateway nu-metal band... you must have an IQ lower than your shoe size if that history isn't apparent to you. When I started playing drums I heard Slipknot for the first time and it made me want to play exactly like Joey. He gave me so much inspiration along with Chris from Lamb of God. (Sic) was the song that stuck in my head for years and even till this day. Thats when I knew I was gonna play this style of drums for the rest of my life

Joey Jordison doesn't feel like any other drum virtuoso, he sounds like the drums are just magically doimg that. That's how smooth and yet eclectic his playing is.

JJ was a musician first and a drummer second. If yall want to see the full range of his creative thinking, look up his work on the Roadrunner All Stars record. He was a team captain and his group did four songs. Four incredibly different takes that he masterminded. Incredible stuff, even if a couple of them aren't metal.

I will never forget at age 8 watching the ‘Left Behind’ music video.
It absolutely blew me away and Joey’s drumming immediately drew me in.
I got my first drum kit shortly after and found my passion. He truly changed my life as I’m sure he did countless others.
One year today and it still doesn’t seem real.

One of, if not THE most influential drummers in heavy music. The loss of Joey felt like such a monumental loss of my childhood and it was a massive blow. Slipknot died with Paul and the final nail in the coffin was them firing Joey. RIP to one of the greatest drummers of all time.

I think that video of the Eyeless intro live perfectly sums him up. So fast, so tight, all while having the time of his life and hair whipping so fast it would make even standing difficult, let alone playing the drums.
God, I LOVE watching Joey's drumcam videos. By far the most intense, creative, f*cking insanely talented and original drummer I've ever listened to. Everything he played amazed me.
This is a beautiful tribute to one of the best artist in the world. Without knowing it, he influenced my life and as an adult I watch videos of him in awe. Thank you for keeping joeys spirit alive!
Joey wasn't just an immensely talented and technical drummer - he was one hell of an entertainer, too. Miss you in the band, 1.
My favorite slipknot song is “The Shape”, for multiple reasons.
On top of being the heaviest/most underrated song they’ve made (in my opinion), I feel it showcases Joey’s creativity. The verses, for the most part, are just ambient noise with a two note base line. Joey follows the bass with his foot while playing a thrash beat over it, but somehow makes it groovy. The chorus to me is really where he shines creatively. It’s a tremolo riff, and I feel if that riff was given to any other metal drummer, they probably would have either put a blast beat over it, or just laid some heavy double bass over it, but Joey grooved that tremolo, and it was the first time I’d heard something like that.
He took a song that if played by anyone else, would have been noise and double bass, but he took that song and made it groove, all while keeping a heavy feel. That song, to me, is the true genius of Joey Jordison!

the main part of the shapes chorus are the vocals and joey complements them by following some parts of it and that makes the song really powerful
he's definitely studied a lot of jazz in his life, because I remember listening to a demo before Corey came in and there were one or two songs that he'd put jazz in the middle of out of nowhere and matched it up a lot. He certainly cared about doing what the other drummers weren't doing and loved the instrument.
The entirety of the Iowa album is just fantastic
Theres just something so clean and aggressive about the way he hits everythinf mechanically perfectly but so full of emotion. One of the good ones.

I loved all the songs that had Joey Jordison in it because man, I was always rocking out and jamming in my room, and now with him gone it has been one of those moments where I can enjoy his time with all of the bands that he played in until his final moments and just like that they took him away from us fans 😢😢 which left me heartbroken to say the least. Joey Jordison is gone but he is never forgotten. He will forever be known has the man, the myth, the legend of metal. Rock in Heaven

I will never forget their tour in 2001. I was 16/17 and my sister got me tickets to see them live in Berlin. When the drum kit started rotating, going in the air, flipping 90°, rotating again... all while he was playing and then the lights went out to show the big ass pentagramm. Man this concert was unbelievable!

I have Joey to thank for my career, my passion, and my purpose in life. It was his compositions that made me fall in love with drums and metal music from a very young age. My favorite moment of him will always be him blessing the London crowd with the drum solo performance of a lifetime, spinning around and upside down all to end it with a cymbal catch and a middle finger. R.I.P to the one who started it all. We love and miss you Joey.

I watched his last slipknot tour in Sydney 10 years ago, not because of slipknot, but because of Joey.
Joey and The Rev were two of my all-time favorite drummers. RIP to both and thanks for all of the memories!
His showmanship was also one of his many specialities. From hair windmills, to drum spinner-upside-downerers, to stick spins and more, there was an excitment to him that made you wanna see more of his incredible talent. A true legend, Rest In Peace

Best drummer to ever grace a drum set period. Not to say there isn’t other talented drummers today and in the past cause there most definitely is but Joey just hits different in every way possible behind the kit. Dude was a legend and inspired myself and so many others. He and Paul was slipknot.

I saw Joey live with Korn. Seriously, the energy would go up 10 fold no matter who he played with. I'm happy to have one of his signature snares with the S logo. It's one of my most prized possessions.

this man is so important to me, I remember me being around 8 coming from DR and loving the drums. For some reason when I had log into TH-cam my second day in the country to watch some drum videos, joey had came up and what intrigued me was his mask. man his mask was so sick! R.I.P the goat
Besides his technical prowess, god-tier drumming and unmistakable signature sound, the other thing about Joey is that of all the drummers in the 2000's he inspired by far the most people to start playing the drums. To me, he's not the best or my favourite, but man I love this guy so much. Bless him 🖤
I loved this video style. A real professional metal drummer going over another drummer's talents and abilities. Letting us listen to the original and then showing us what he's doing with nice clean camera angles. It's a really cool way to showcase some of our favourite drummers and why we love them so much.

Feeling emotional watching this video only now. I grew up listening slipknot and idolizing Joey. I wanted to play drum since I was very young and managed to get my first drum while watching videos of Joey everyday. Now I feel old... He was a pure genius and a truly good man. He will be missed.

Vendetta is definitely one of my favorite tracks that Joey created. I’ve tried and tried again to play that song, but I just don’t have the speed and stamina for it.
I remember being a little kid and my dad used to have four 16” subs in the trunk of a ‘96 Dodge Neon. I remember “Me Inside” playing in that car and the double bass made the seat feel like a massage chair.
