    Your comparison with ice hockey is spot on. Most sports go my turn/your turn. AFL and ice hockey are the only two sports where the ball/puck is perpetually contested. A unique aspect of both sports that makes both sports great.

    Umpiring an AFL game is different to umpiring most other sports. Umpires not only enforce the rules of the game, but also are expected to encourage the flow of the game, and this is even more so in finals footy. The result is that many minor infringements are not penalised, while others are called and immediately rescinded for 'advantage' to keep the game moving. The continued flow of the game means that even if an umpire does realise they made a mistake, there really is no allowance for them to take it back. In the contentious infringement late in this grand final, while the player was obviously tripped, the ball was immediately in clean possession of a team mate, and the umpire quickly called 'advantage', with the (required by management) desire to keep the game moving. 'Advantage', however, dissipated as soon as it was called, meaning that the wiser umpiring decision would have been to pull the game up. The umpire's decision was quick, and not necessarily wrong with regards to the way they are instructed to manage the flow of the game, but hindsight says he should have probably recognised there was no real advantage and paid the free kick instead.

    • @johndoe5061
      @johndoe5061 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's as simple as this... if a player chooses to continue playing after a whistle for a free, then the player has chosen to take advantage, or if it's a free kick for the opposition, then it would be a 50 metre penalty the other way. The brissy player decided to take advantage, but he screwed up his kick due to pressure. No crying about being cheated should be engaged.

    Great game, everyone looks for reasons and excuses as to why they lost, Brisbane complaining about the umpires in the last 1/4, the missed shots at goal in the last 1/4, had Collingwood lost we’d be complaining about the umps too, or the 18 behinds we scored, realistically we should’ve won by 40, in the end it was a great spectacle that it was so close and that’s all that matters

    We lost the game when Berry gave away that 50m penalty late in the fourth qtr. (Sidebottom) That's when I said "well that's the game".
    sorry we couldn't bring it home for ya Johnny. Here's hoping for success next year but, as you have found out, it's really difficult just to get to the Grand Final, let alone win it. All we can do is hope.

    Not a word about the ball being out of bounds ( missed by the umpires ) late in the last quarter, which led to Daniher's goal. A disgraceful NON call that nearly cost the Magpies victory. Both teams showed great ticker and both will remain strong in the coming years. Magpies forever.

      What about the out on the full earlier in the game that wasn't given. What about Nick Faicos ducking and getting 3 free kicks. Ducked enough to make a pond worth. Meanwhile Starcevich got decapitated and NO call. First half umpiring was deplorably biased towards Collingwood. It improved a bit in the 2nd half until that disgraceful advantage call

Just like the AFL Final we had one local team vs a Queensland team and just like Collingwood, the local team won by 2 points. Watch it when you can it was epic. Remember though it is Rugby League not Rugby union. Once you know the rules, you would love it. The ball can only be passed Backwards, they get 6 passes and try to score a Try by getting the ball over the try line, much like NFL but in Rugby the ball must touch the ground to be a valid try. much more of course but it's a start i you are interested in watching it,

    "Play on advantage" is only called after the advantage is taken. The Brisbane player (Neale) was tripped as he handpassed it & the umpire clearly blew the whistle to pay the free kick. After that, another Brisbane player (Bailey) kicked the ball. That's when the umpire called ,"Advantage". It was Bailey's choice, not the umpires. Just because the kick went to Collingwood & was not Marked by a Brisbane player, that's just too bad. Think about it, if everytime taking Advantage didn't work out, all they had to do is say they didn't hear the whistle, they would just say that, whether they actually heard it or not. Put it this way, if it had been a Collingwood player that kicked the ball after the whistle, then that would've been a 50mtr penalty on top of the free kick. Can't argue you didn't hear the whistle. That works both ways. 100% correct umpiring! TV commentators & former players need to learn the rules, instead of making an issue when there isn't one.

    • @darrylschultz9395
      @darrylschultz9395 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only reason they'd have played on in that situation if they really had heard the umpire had awarded a free, was if they'd seen a Brisbane player in the clear closer to goal that they could pass it to. There was no such player, so they clearly played on because they were unaware the umpire had awarded a free. The umpire should've recognised this and stopped proceedings.

    • @tcullen3684
      @tcullen3684 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @darrylschultz9395 Absolute rubbish! It's not the umpires job to second-guess players. They can't read minds or know what a player is thinking or if they have or have not heard the whistle. If it had been a Collingwood player that kicked the ball after the whistle, that would've been a 50 mtr penalty, whether they had heard the whistle or not. The choice to play on in that or any situation is the players choice, not the umpires. It is now & always has been that way. Prove me wrong, show me just one time in the history of the game, a situation where a player decided to play on & because it didn't work out, the umpire recalled it & gave the free kick anyway. Just one. Umpires don't tell players when to play on. They simply call play on after a player has done so.

    • @darrylschultz9395
      @darrylschultz9395 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tcullen3684 You say it was the player's choice to play on, but such a thing as making a choice is only possible when the player has an awareness a free kick has been awarded. In this instance there was clearly no such awareness-therefore no such thing as choosing what to do next, existed. In the player's mind, he was just doing the only thing available-i.e, continuing to play-and choice didn't come into it. I concede Brisbane still may not have won if the player had heard the whistle, and chosen to take the free kick(as it seems likely they would've done, since they were close enough to kick the winning goal with a good kick-and there hadn't been a Brisbane player closer to goal and in the clear to kick it to). Plenty of commentators and others seemed pretty outraged by what took place, but I guess you know better.😆 Brisbane were quite likely robbed of a premiership-you know it and I know it. I suggest just be happy Colliwobbles got away with a very lucky win. Cheers.

      @darrylschultz9395 Yes, I'm surprised that the number of so-called experts that don't seem to understand the rules. Particularly Matthew Richardson & Luke Hodge that started all this nonsense.
      So tell me Mr Expert, what rule should the umpire have applied in that situation. You know the one, the one that says the umpire can tell a player it's unwise to play on or recall the ball for a free kick if playing on doesn't work out for them. Exactly what number rule is that? Or how about the rule that says they may not have heard the whistle so cut them some slack! & why didn't that rule apply when Brisbane got the 50 mtr penalty earlier. Fair to say a stand call is a lot quieter than a whistle. Watch this, here's a whole panel of experts that don't so much as batter an eye lid when the umpire calls Advantage after Zac Bailey played on. Enjoy!

      @@tcullen3684 I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least a few of those with decades of experience in footy that know at least as much as you about it. But I wonder if you'll be so tolerant if Collingwood is in next year's Grand Final, and they're 50 metres out and less than a goal behind with a minute to go, when the umpire says take the advantage, despite there being no advantage. Poetic justice I think they would call it.

    You come from a very different culture. The two teams things would not wash here but I get how its different there when you have like two NY teams in things and go.for both. It's just different here. Its a bit like that in English football too. If you come from a little town with no chance of ever being big you go for them AND Arsenal or Liverpool or whoever. If you go for the crows you despise Port etc I think you will get a Brisbane flag but you could have been on the pies.
