  • Freediving is expensive. Every dive trip I do requires international flights, hotels, transport, etc, adding up to thousands. It also requires good weather, clear ocean conditions and luck .I will either need to give up my job and go full time channel, or discontinue it. But if I go full time, how will I make an income... This year I need to make a decision

    TH-cam ad revenue isnt enough for smaller community channels, and more viewers should realize that if they find something if worth they should help continue it.
    But if you would do more videos, like your tutorials are really goodyour videos that might help fill the video gap and bring a little of ad revenue?
    gear review videos once in a while could be good as well
    I hope you get enough help from viewers,
    you are first channel i patreon!

      Mantas. Thank you so much! When your pledge came through it really made my day. I wont be charging for the moment, at least until I have figure out a way forward. But when I do get my plan together, your support is going to be so worth it. Thank you thank you thank you..

      Yeah man! Do some gear reviews! I would love to see the low down on some gear before I bought it. You dive frequently, so the info will be on point. Also, you could maybe get some companies to sponsor you? Give you the gear to review?

      I have dived pretty much all the sites nearby... so I'm having to fly further and further, so basically that it what has taken me to this point. Flying half way around the world, dropping a few thousand USD, then not getting a video cause of bad vis is not really something I want to continue doing. At least if I was fulltime, I can wait for better conditions, then get the vid. The question is, will I be able to go full time. Anyway, thanks for your comments... stay subscribed, lets see what the future holds.

      Think of creating a content, that is useful for brands and agencies that market to freedivers and beyond (like tourists, swimmers, sport accesories like cameras), tour companies, diving centers, PADI needs to grow their freediving course now, etc. This will help you funding. Get not only a content, but also sales and marketing strategy. Also, make sure to study Creator Playbook content. First tip would be to create series, rather then releasing one video. Try to take more content on one trip. On the other hand, it's always worth to wait.

      i 100 percent agree with this comment FreeDiver HD. You're my all time favorite YTer and that doesn't just come down to the freediving, its the style and personality of your vids as well. I say take that leap of faith even though I'm not at this stage sure what it means for you. I will support you and this channel regardless but know you have a very loyal fan here in Indonesia! Im saving up to open an ecotour in remote east Indonesia, its a dream of mine to have you visit me and do an episode in East Indonesia with me. The sea and reefs here are littered with WW2 plane and shipwrecks as well that are really unknown to the outside eye.

    How about you stop traveling so often to expensive destinations and gear some of your videos more towards the average freediver, i.e. making videos about breathe holding techniques, exercise routines, stretching, meet-ups, freediving gear, etc... As loyal viewers we dont always need extremely high quality content to remain interested in supporting your channel. Just some advice from a fan. thanks

      Basically, he needs to work on description of videos, so non-fans can find them. And on the other hand, if freediving is so unpopular, he needs to rethink his content strategic goal not only presenting nice shots, but also promoting freediving for regular Joes.

    • @grantkorte1132
      @grantkorte1132 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, perhaps this sailing deal would add a realm of adventuring in his videos that would make daily vlogs an interesting option and that way ppl who don't free dive would still enjoy the videos

    You have some awesome videos. You have to love doing what you're doing but money is prohibitive, and I totally get it with having bad days because of weather or what not. Only the best (or worst) stuff typically makes it online. I hope you keep diving no matter whichever decision you make, and even if it's an update a year because you can't go full-time, that's okay. Be safe diving out there.

    your TH-cam channel is my motivation to make my own freedive videos.. i havent uploaded it to facebook because of this copyright issues. ever since I watched your videos I became more inspired to hold my breath longer and dive deeper down the ocean. I hope you can visit Philippines one day.. there are a lot of interesting dive sites here that you can possibly add to your soon to be channel.. freedive community in the Philippines is getting bigger and bigger by the way.. you can make this community even bigger if you continue to make inspiring videos like this.

If this mean anything to you, i really think your videos are THE best out there, without compare. You go man! Would love to see you succeed. In a few weeks me and my buddy will travel and try our hands at freediving for real. Many years ago, you inspired me to get some equipment and start dreaming and having a go at it by myself. Unfortunately it has taken a while for it to become reality, because of lack of diving sites and diving buddies. The french west coast, which is our planned route, should have loads of WWII wrecks I reckon. You probably know better than me in that area. Also, I loved it when you went vegan! Your passion and commitment is inspiring. Good luck, and all the best. Keep fighting for what you want, I'm sure you can do this! /AB

      Just come to the med :) Malta for example is freediving/wreckdiving heaven and as an English speaker you would have plenty of work. Freediver instructors, or as a shipper even. It's not expensive to live, especially Gozo. You can fly to Cyprus and Spain/Italy for 50-120 dollars rounddtrip. You can produce more content than you can edit every week, just by taking a bus and plunging down one of the dozens of wrecks, caves, underwater tunnels, tuna pens etc etc etc etc.

    Yeah I had a similar thought process. I would love to do something full time but if it doesn't pay i can't play. I do however have a small yacht. You could pick up something similar for relatively small amount of money then fund a bigger and better one as your channel grows. Maybe team up with another channel who already has gone full time sailing. Then give tutorials in person as you go around the world. Happy to help any way I can just drop me a line if you need. I can live vicariously through you.

    Do what you can. I supect a boat would help to travel around a bit more. Also freediving is quite limited in terms of scope. Learning about someones experience travelling and life in general is quite interesting. My thoughts anyway.

    I agree with what others already have stated; amazing videos and thanks for sharing! But please don't pretend that you're loosing money by traveling and publishing videos on YT. That's like stating that your vacation trips around the world is like your second job. :P And trust me, a new video every week would be way too much. Quality before quantity, and so far you've done a fantastic job!

    • @freediverhd

    • @t3llmike
      @t3llmike 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want to earn money on your hobby, try combining different revenue streams. YT might be your advertisement channel, but see what you can do with that for your benefit. For one, have sponsored links to places where we as viewers can buy similar equipment that you're using in the videos, or to the different hotels. Talk to the representatives for tourism at some of the countries you're showcasing, get sponsorships from manufacturers, tourist destinations, dive centers etc. That might give some income. And have sponsor messages in the videos. That might help a bit as well.
      Also, what about organizing freediving trips, acting as a guide, or organize some freediving lessons even? I know that I would be interested in spending quite much on a awesome freediving trip where I could learn a thing or two, and at the same time meet others with the same interest, and get to visit some awesome places. Just some tips. :)

    Hey you should check out used sailboats, they can be relatively cheap, much cheaper than $35,000! I have been watching your videos for years now, and you have inspired me to learn how to freedive.

    Wow, it's so sad that an amazing channel like this is struggling to get funded while there are people that just play videogames and make a fortune...
    I discovered your channel about 2 weeks ago, and I couldn't believe that your videos have "only" a few thousand views. Your content is really great. It inspired me to go back to freediving and spearfishing. I know the freediving community is small, but I bet many people who are not freedivers would also love to watch your videos. Maybe you just need to reach more people (not sure how to do that though...)
    I've made a pledge in patreon (unfortunatelly only $5.... I wish I could give a lot more, but I am also in a phase in my life where I need to save a lot to do the things I want) and I'll definitely show your channel to my friends.
    If there is something else I can do to help, please tell me. I wish you all of luck, and I really hope you can manage to make a living from what you trully love, because that's my dream too.
    Cheers!!

    What is the vest way to get into free diving/ how did you learn it? I am 16 and go to a local dive club once or twice a week. I can hold my breath without moving arround 2:30! Is that good?

    • @sanctious
      @sanctious 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a class. Before my first class my best time was 2:10. During my first class I got up to 3:36 (but that is higher than average). Now I'm an instructor in Guam. If you want to compare your untrained ability to my untrained ability before then 2:30 is a very good time in my opinion!

    • @satisfaction3078
      @satisfaction3078 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Guam Guy but i breathed like 3 minutes relaxed so had a long time to be ready... Do you know where to make classes? So where to search?

    • @sanctious
      @sanctious 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are supposed to take your time to breathe and relax before you hold your breath. Depends where in the world you are. Try to googling then "freedive course" and [name of you town, state/province] and see what you get.

    dean, i think that you may be misunderstood in saying that there isn't enough interest in freediving to get millions of views weekly. Your videos are very interesting and i show them to my friends and family, none of whom had heard of free diving. However, after seeing videos of it and learning more about it, they are all interested and enjoy seeing the videos. Not everyone can freedive, but most people will be interested in it if they simply learn about it. My point is that if you keep up the great work, i think you will eventually see exponential growth of your channel, especially if some of your videos go "viral" and reach the trending page of youtube. good luck!

    Maybe try and get some sponsors. Also maybe try and do some videos on out of water prep and such, what equipment and what techniques u use to dive. Although u have done those types of videos before, maybe u can add to it. Tips and tricks, how to find dive spots etc. idk just a suggestion. Hope u stick around but it's up to u.

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had tired the sponser thing... but they would send me gear (masks, flashlights etc) then I still need to spend say, 1000USD to fly to Guam so I could do a video = net loss for me. If sponsor is willing to pay say 1500USD to cover my costs it would work, but for far in my experience they are not willing to fork out that kind of money. The sponsor thing would be a nice bonus if I did live by the ocean.. but I don't, so I don't know if that's an option.

    7:30 When coming up be aware what is above you. You have even made a video where you do not look up and hit your head to a boat. There might be also stuff under water where you can hit your head. It is your responsibility to be aware of surrounding not your buddy. From one diving book (loosely translated) "When coming up look up. Keep other hand above your head to protect your head. Rotate while coming up to see what's above you."
    It just doesn't look very safe when you are coming up and your head is down. I assume that you don't walk backwards. Or drive to crossroads while looking backwards.

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure you got that out of a scuba diving book. Scuba divers go down, then only come up much later, since scubas dont have time pressure to return to the surface in a rush, they can take there time, look around, spin, etc. Freedivers are under time pressure to return to the surface - so I havent really seen freedivers surface arm raised, spinning. Since a freedivers air is limited, the aim is the stay as streamlined as possible. And hopefully the situation on the surface hasnt changed much since you went down *hope*. The boat collosion injuries/deaths I have researched occured while the freediver was already on the surface looking down - since there is where the diver spends most of his time, and they are hard to see. Ironically, this dive site, which is known as a shore dive and almost never has boats anywhere near it - one day while I was diving, a speed boat came straight through the dive site full speed, not giving a fuck that this is a well known dive site. It a tough call about being streamlined, and trying to be full aware on the surface - my best advice is to completely avoid dive sites where there is a boat risk... even if you see the boat, whats more important is the boat seeing you!

    • @juhva
      @juhva 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "And hopefully the situation on the surface hasnt changed much"
      In my mind safety is number one in (scuba/free) diving. And would not bet my head on luck. We can all think which way is safer when coming up. Looking up to surface or down to bottom. Boats are just one thing which you might bump. In the end is your head and you decide what to do with it.

  • @koenigsbier50

    Man, make this choice only for yourself, not for us. We all know you wish to live of freediving or simply live and freedive. If you have a big goal of buying a sailboat then do it or you will regret it one day! I personally don't mind even if you don't post a single video for 2 years. You know we won't unsubscribe because you don't post anything. And if one day you reach your goal and you start posting videos again, what an awesome surprise it will be for us to see a new video from you in our "subscriptions" feed.
    Also I agree with another comment, if you really want to keep this channel "alive" you can continue to make some content from time to time by posting some "tips video" like you did 3 years ago. I'm a very beginner but I follow you for a long time and that's always good to watch.
    If you go diving or even in a swimming pool you can also record some "live tips" like closer to an "online course" style video.
    We enjoy watching beautiful underwater places you go but we'd like also get better ourselves to enjoy too (especially beginners like me).
    So whatever the choice you make, it doesn't have to be 1 or 0 only.
    Save some money and post again in 1 or 2 years, I'm personally totally fine with it.
    Or continue posting very seldom from time to time when you travel somewhere (we all know money doesn't change the fact that you love freediving and for sure you will continue when you can) I'm totally fine with this way too.

    I really didn't care if I was seeing the same location many times. Ok, maybe 20 videos in a row might get to me, but all of the videos can still be different.
    This is especially true for videos that were over a year old for me. I'm simply not going to remember every exact detail and would gladly watch a new one of the same location.
    I'm also curious how much useable footage you get from an average dive? If doing multiple videos from the same dive is possible, I'm all for that.

    FreediverHD I know you might not read this but I have an idea for you. I don't know much about it but you can look it up. There is this new software called Filmstro. What you do with it is that you pay for a subscription and it allows you to use a vast amount of musical content by giving you the licenses through that monthly subscription so you can use all their music in youtube and still get money. It is pretty cool because you can edit the music at the same time you edit your video. It is hard to explain but look it up believe me. It might help you it might not but give it a chance

    OK my ideas to keep you going. 1) Online drop shipping dive gear 2) Expand the subject of your content to include travel, travel tips, history, culture and food of wherever you're going 3) Expand the content to video equipment review and video tips 4) Combine drone footage with underwater footage to make it more exciting for the non-diver or travel enthusiast 5) More shark encounters and shark feeding frenzies 6) More in depth National Geographic / David Attenborough style voice-overs and lastly a totally selfish suggestion 7) More videos on nudibranches

    • @freediverhd

    • @biobodylife6519
      @biobodylife6519 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My other ideas are 8) Increase your Instagram posts to daily... automate this so if you dive once a month chose 30 spectacular photos from that dive trip 9) Pixel or avatar the person who spends a lot of time and money on ocean pursuits, it may not be who you think, for example it could be a female surfer 10) Cook seafood dishes and show us the process from spearing to cooking to eating 11) Develop a course / webinar series on breath hold, freediving or underwater photography 12) Collaboration with Kimi Werner, iSurfTribe, Youngbloods, Dallymyd, XPT life (Laird, Gabby), that crazy Dutch ice water guy 13) Instead of using apnoea apps, we use your videos, to train daily, it's just a timer with a picture of lungs inflating, holding & deflating except your videos would have beautiful underwater scenes in the background. One video would have exponential hits because each viewer is playing it daily... see Michael Sealy / Jason Stephenson meditation. Sorry in advance for long comments, I just want you to do more of what you do.

    A lot of folks here have made some good points and if I may summarize and add on:
    - It's okay, dude. We're a small band of subscribers who thoroughly enjoy your amateur freediving content and we DO NOT EVER wish to see you lose your career or go broke because of us. Now that we understand your situation, it would be wrong of any one of us to demand frequent content if it means you run your life into ruin, or a path that seems high risk.
    - If you wish, you may continue your day job and have less frequent uploads. Doesn't even need to be amazing quality, just keep up the good work you've always done.
    - Regardless of what you choose, diversifying your content may increase views and increase options for monetizable videos. As others have said, you can start a vlog (with the amount of intimacy you're comfortable with), offer tips and tutorials, do reviews, meetup with new and seasoned freedivers and talk about their stories, re-do older videos with updated information, and/or anything tangently related to freediving.
    We want you to stay with us, but if you must go we'll understand.
