Great brakes. More powerful than codes and saints, and the modulation is somewhere between sram and shimano brakes.

I just purchased the specialized Turbo levo s works. I upgraded the brakes to the magura mt7 anniversary breaks with a 220 mm front rotor and a 203 in the back... Under most circumstances their whisper quiet and modulate beautifully, however when it gets really steep and I have to dig into the brakes deeply for more stopping power, they shutter like crazy, until the bike finally comes to a stop. The bike shop has worked on these breaks, and tried everything that they know to get them to function properly, I'm confident that the technicians know the ins and outs of how to make these brakes work properly however they have been unsuccessful, and they've had my bike now going on the second week. No amount of cleaning the discs, sanding down the pads, and attempting to bed the pads in properly, or checking the mounting adapters has proved to solve the problem. I spent more money to have what I thought would be the best breaks in the whole wide world with maximum stopping power and performance and modulation, and they have turned out to be the worst breaking experience I have ever experienced in the last 30 years of cycling. Any suggestions?
The first thing I done on the Levo was changed the brakes to Magura Mt7s the difference is night and day the performance is outstanding change the lever to single finger for more personal adjustment and they look good. I’m using them on two bikes for four years in all conditions, I’d never give my money for anything else. SRAM brakes’ modulation is a marketing term for lack of braking power (that’s one reason you see 220 rotors). If you are used to SRAM then the power of the Shimano brakes seem overwhelming (just like the MT7’s for Rob in the video) but actually, they just work properly and you have the same power on the bottom as you had on the top. Code RSC with 220 rotors might be OK but two of my bikes came with Guide RS and RE and their lack of power a.k.a. ‘excellent modulation’ was a dreadful experience for me - after using Shimano brakes before - and the sticky plungers in the levers in summertime didn’t help either. I gave them a chance because I liked their look but eventually, I had to switch to Shimano because in the mountains they were terrifying for me.
Hallo Rob. Are you expirenses some Brakepad play when braking on the mt7 brakes. I just installed mt7 pro on my levo expert and a have knocking sound when braking. I can feel the pads are moving back and forth when the brakes are activated. I have the 220 mm mdr-p rotors.
Hi Rob the new disc rotors are great extra in the emtb world the ergonomic of the brakes also but the constant correct working of brakes is a no go. Should you not try Hope brakes in time of brexit? I ride Zee brakes with the magura new rotors and swissstop vented pads and works great in dry and damped terrain. Replaced airshox by a Marzo coil and maybe something also for you to test is putting a Vorsprung smashpot in my Marzo Z one, race face next R wheels.....happy new shred year to all.

@@kevinargust3694 Understandable. Why fix what isn't broken, right? Although these days, you could use the hc3 levers and use the leverage adjustment to increase modulation and remove the sudden biteyness. You can go even further by using the green sport pads. I run the sport pads with 180mm rotors on my hardtail, and they definitely feel more like sram guides. On my big bike, I use the gold race pads, 203 rotors, and have the hc3 leverage adjuster set to max bite, and they feel like Saints on steroids. Same brakes, but they feel completely different. Magura brakes can be very versatile once you know your way around them.

Hi Rob, have these given you any issues? I know of someone who has had a few issues - namely front brake failure, for no apparent reason. They needed bleeding, but this was not an easy task!
It's probably a little too late, but this might help: th-cam.com/video/Bl8PChRadX0/w-d-xo.html They're actually super easy to bleed. And I also added in the trick to get the lever throw nice and short with a solid lever feel. If this doesn't work, then he has a faulty seal somewhere.
Hey Rob Rides Emtb! I got Magura MT 5 on my ebike and I like them! I like the longer levers than the Shimano slx I had on my last bike. The only negative is I find the rotors have too large holes in the braking surface that causes a pulsating that I find annoying! I will probably change them out for Shimano icetec! Ride ride ride!
Hey Rob Rides Emtb! When I switched to Shimano icetec on my old bike I noticed way less brake fade on long downhills! If you get a chance to get some do it! I'm headed out to ride up mt burke into a snowstorm! Ride ride ride!
Hey Ian Barcellos! Why do you say Shimano ice tec rotors are too thin? Do you believe they must be thicker for cooling reasons? Do you think they will warp more easily? Do you think the pistons will extend too far when the pads wear down? I have used ice tec rotors for 3 years on my old bike and they cooled way better than standard non ice tec rotors! The aluminum core with the stainless steel layers on either side works amazingly well because the aluminum conducts the heat away faster! Ride ride ride!
@@ericm8811 they should be fine for a bit but they will get too thin very quickly the magura is meant to use 2mm rotors and shimano's are 1.8 so when you account for pad wear and rotor wear the pistons could fall out
I like Maguara for their various products. The old rim brake and moto clutches are all great. However both my and a friend's MT 5 blew up. Literally, after a descent (nasty, long, steep) the brakes just "fell in" and there was blue blood (tm) squirting out of the lever. For that, I am a bit hesitant to run out and get an other set, whether it is MT5 or 7. ps: I am a firm believer of Saint and Hope (v4), but I use XT (4 piston too), but they are not quite Saint (though I prefer them for the front as they don't lock up as easily) ps2: I liked them while they lasted, but I hated how they sounded. Hopes can be squeaky but these just had this resonating whiny strange noise (I guess the split pad design !?) ... just my 2c....
@@RobRidesEMTB Yep :) I was a bit surprised when it happened. I had brakes "soften up" badly (Guide RSC), but squirting fluid is a different ball-game. Saints are like the XT but more on-off. I prefer them for the rear I think. My favourite is still Hope. I have them on one bike (of 4 bikes) and I am thinking of getting some for my new bike too :)
This is way off topic I have a norco sight vlt 2 and I have tremendous chain drops I’ve changed the derailer and everything still massive chain slap. I'm yet to see anything in the bicycle brake kingdom that can outperform my tektro auriga V-Twin setup. Obviously there limited on what forks you can stick them on unfortunately. But my god they stop!! I've quite often locked my front wheel up in the dry on my 50kg E-bike and in the past when i had my tyre slightly underinflated I stripped the valve off the inner tube.
some write they Magura brakes are too sensitive and there is barely any modulation. I haven't tried them. I am not sure what that actually means for those that say or write so, barely any can be huge for some and the other way around.
I haven't used Hydraulic brakes since the evil circle of leaking Shimano brake, which I gave up on. I currently use TRP Spyke. so far most recommended brakes from my Instagram followers is Magura & Trickstuff. With SHimano I read they are death traps, and they worked for years, some are lucky I guess, to get brakes that does not have faulty seals or failures. Some say the more expensive shimano brakes will do good from SLX and up. but I just given up on shimano, if they can't make proper budget brake that has good quality control and don't leak I am not having the same thing happen to me over and over again, I am done. I wish I could test stuff without buying it. butt the current setup is not perfect, but at least I don't have to deal predictable inconsistency, leaks. but the weak point of TRP spyke is flimsy levers, and weak barrel adjuster on caliper that can snap on a impact or will bend due to rear suspension movement it destroys the threads on barrel adjuster, and bends it, so swapped barrel adjuster from another caliper & turned it all the way in, to minimize the play. I have review of the ML800 levers and the Spyke caliper on my website.
Saint or MT7,...everything else is just trash vs. those two... i switched from MT7 to Saints,...i dont like the modulation Travel on the MT7,..Saint`s Point of engagement is brutal,...and i like it!! Stopping Power is quite similar...
Great breaks and they look the business on my previous 2019 Levo. shrani.najdi.si/?1F/m0/2M7Pg4h6/turbo-2.jpg Bleeding is more or less straight forward, similar to Shimano, if you follow the instructions.
@@Marc28031984 exactly 👍👍👍
Hallo Rob. Are you expirenses some Brakepad play when braking on the mt7 brakes. I just installed mt7 pro on my levo expert and a have knocking sound when braking. I can feel the pads are moving back and forth when the brakes are activated. I have the 220 mm mdr-p rotors.
Its all about the pads!
Are you still using these brakes Rob?
Larger rear disc?
Hi Rob, are you using the pads that came with the MT7 brakes?
Arnt you worried about protecting your stanchions with that fender?
200FR+200RR?
Anyone else noticed that chip on the rotors @ 5:59?
I've fitted mt7 raceline to my stumpjumper and they were easy to fit and bleed in my opinion compared to the old guide r's I took off
Sorry for the late question but are your maguras comes with brake pads or you buy them from another place?
i love mine came on my Frey m600
stop a tank
Been looking at getting these for my DH bike. Since I got ebike with MT30s my Code Rs on the rig feel like shit.
I wonder how they fare, compared to the Shimano Saints I installed in place of the SRAM Guider RE ( it is night and day, no comparison ).
Happy new year rob. They look really nice on plush looking. Picking my e150rs up in few days cnt wait.
Awesome! Bet you can't wait. New bike day is the best!
Gonna look kinda janky but I’m considering chucking these on my dj
I live in Hampshire, whereabouts in Surrey is that?
Ok to bleed and set up. but I would change them in an instant for XO trails.
If you know the trick. It takes less than 5 minutes to get them to 100%: th-cam.com/video/Bl8PChRadX0/w-d-xo.html They're so easy to bleed and to get the lever feeling nice and solid, that I'll probably never go back to sram or shimano.
@@dukeofmtb I've run them for a year. Would still prefer sram XO trails. Power about the same, but the modulation with sram suits me better
@@dukeofmtb I think we all ride better when we have confidence in our brake set up. Noticed that when I changed from to two finger to the one finger levers, my speed increased due to confidence in brakes working with one finger.
@@kevinargust3694 I agree. When my brakes feel like poop, I ride much slower. Can't go fast if you're scared that your brakes won't slow you down before the next corner. 😅
Hi mate what pads did you use ?
Hi Rob. How do you mount the dropper lever and shift lever to these MT7:s? I have the 2020 Kenevo Expert with OEM Code R brakes and noticed that dropper/shift levers are mounted directy to the brakes. I'm about to order the MT7:s but I'm unsure about this.
You seem to think very highly of Berkshire cycles, I don't for the simple reason that they couldn't or wouldn't change the belt on my Brose T motor even though I was willing to accept loss of warranty. All they were prepared to do was to replace the motor at the cost of near £600. Thankfully, I managed to find someone up north to do the belt change for me and it cost me, including shipping and parts, £80.
Shimano BR-M8020. Best. Brakes. Ever.
Was riding magura on my previous (e-) MTB. Running Code R now... I miss te MT's. Hopefully 2020 Will bring me back... I am hoping for that Radon 8.0. Yr last vid on that made me want it🤤
Yeah that bike sounds great!
Hello i have a turbo levo and i m looking for magura brakes mt7 on the rear do i need to change disc brake for 203mm and caliper spacer too?
What camera did you use for the descent?
Hi Rob, have these given you any issues? I know of someone who has had a few issues - namely front brake failure, for no apparent reason. They needed bleeding, but this was not an easy task!
It's probably a little too late, but this might help: th-cam.com/video/Bl8PChRadX0/w-d-xo.html They're actually super easy to bleed. And I also added in the trick to get the lever throw nice and short with a solid lever feel. If this doesn't work, then he has a faulty seal somewhere.
@@dukeofmtb Thanks for that! Very clear and concise video...new subscriber here :)
@@ragestunts6990 Glad I could help. 😊
Yeah, I think I get a little pulsing too - more noise than feel though, if that makes sense?
Hey Rob Rides Emtb! When I switched to Shimano icetec on my old bike I noticed way less brake fade on long downhills! If you get a chance to get some do it! I'm headed out to ride up mt burke into a snowstorm! Ride ride ride!
Get sram centerline rotors or galfer wave the shimano are too thin to work properly and even sram is pushing it
Hey Ian Barcellos!
@@ericm8811 they should be fine for a bit but they will get too thin very quickly the magura is meant to use 2mm rotors and shimano's are 1.8 so when you account for pad wear and rotor wear the pistons could fall out
These look sick dude! Quick question too.. What are your trousers in the vid please? (Y)
They are Fox Attack Fire
@@RobRidesEMTB Thank you good sir!
Hi Rob,
which tires do you use on the kenevo in this muddy conditions?
Hoya, Hillbilly on the front with butcher on the back
Excellent
can anyone compare magura to the saint m820 ?
Hmmm the Bruni-Lever? Just a Marketing-Gag?
It’s actually pretty good!
I like Maguara for their various products. The old rim brake and moto clutches are all great.
However both my and a friend's MT 5 blew up. Literally, after a descent (nasty, long, steep) the brakes just "fell in" and there was blue blood (tm) squirting out of the lever.
For that, I am a bit hesitant to run out and get an other set, whether it is MT5 or 7.
ps: I am a firm believer of Saint and Hope (v4), but I use XT (4 piston too), but they are not quite Saint (though I prefer them for the front as they don't lock up as easily)
ps2: I liked them while they lasted, but I hated how they sounded. Hopes can be squeaky but these just had this resonating whiny strange noise (I guess the split pad design !?) ...
just my 2c....
That doesn't sound good! Heard very good things about the Saints and really like the XT brakes too...
Just wondering is there a chainguide for a shimano steps e8000 or is there a tensioner on the motor side to not have the chain slap so much? Thank you
Are these the magura e bike especific version?
Only the rotors
Time to buy a new helmet. This one got dirty 😉🤘🏻
Hehe! For sure 🤣🤣
Nice e bike grandma hahahah
How much did Magura pay for this video?
Nothing, i hate when people ask that, they weren't payed and magura brakes are very good
RIDE DOWN CHICKEN POOH
Super breakable 🤣🤣🤣
Saint or MT7,...everything else is just trash vs. those two... i switched from MT7 to Saints,...i dont like the modulation Travel on the MT7,..Saint`s Point of engagement is brutal,...and i like it!!
Stopping Power is quite similar...
Im 129kg so see what they do for me
Jon The Beast Bowler You can also get some 220mm rotors If you feel like you need them
No wonder you think they are good if you have been using Sram brakes. Go Hope.
Great breaks and they look the business on my previous 2019 Levo.
shrani.najdi.si/?1F/m0/2M7Pg4h6/turbo-2.jpg
Bleeding is more or less straight forward, similar to Shimano, if you follow the instructions. Little fiddle to set up, if you don't want any small rubbing noise, as the pads are really unbelievable close to the rotor, even after 500km+.
For 2020 Levo, will try new XTR and gave Magura a pass.
shrani.si/f/2S/lC/2oZZO3i2/screenshot-81-copy.jpg
O. I like those new Magura rotors, almost as new XTR. 😎
Nice looking brakes good calipers, but plastic shitty master cylinder levers- that the lid can pop off of.
😂 the worst I’ve ever set up. Good luck to those that buy them. After I have set up over 100 SRAM/Shimano break set. Never an issue. Magura in a nightmare every time. It take many many attempts. And you just have to sit and pray. Plan on $400 in labor to get them to work.
uuuuggghhh these rotors are uuuuuugly
Worst levers ever.
Yuck.
