    Very Helpful video! I just changed my thermostat on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee following your instructions and you explained it perfectly! A little difficult aligning the bottom bolt because of the fan guard, also the thermostat itself didn't want to cooperate and remain "seated" and the gasket material wasn't helpful to get them to stick together. All and all though the video made this job much easier than if I just went at it by the book. Thank you and keep it up! I am going to use your videos for everything!

      The serpentine belt is a pain- at least on your 98' you only have to loosen 1-2 bolts to loosen the belt. On my 95- there are 5. I had to use a cut off tool to remove the rusted bolts on my air box- which ended up being a separate hour long project with a trip to the local hardware store, haha.

    To make sure you get all the air out of the system when the engine is cold start it up with the radiator cap off and burp it while the engine is running. That way the water pump will flush out most the air in the system.

    so you only replace the thermostat housing gasket... i notice the OEM mopar one has a gasket for the back of the thermostat too, probably to protect the housing gasket... I'm having a problem I've been through 3 gaskets trying replace it. Its a brand new thermostat and gasket, but it has leaked pretty bad three times...
    any suggestions?
    thanks in advance

      clean the area like he showed in the video, and after scraping away the seal, get a wire brush and make it real clean. check the back of the housing that he removed and set off to the side, dangling on the end of the hose. clean the housing with a wire brush too. use rtv on both sides of the gasket even if it has rubber seals. my rubber seals leaked the second time i did it. the first time i broke the original housing by putting the bolt in too tight with a paper style seal. this seems to be the only method that worked for me. also, when you put the thermostat in, orient it so that the breather hole is on top.

    • @ibberman

      @@SneakySolidSnake What thermostat do you recommend ? they don't all have a breather hole.

    • @SneakySolidSnake
      @SneakySolidSnake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ibberman when you're buying the thermostat, just tell the clerk helping you out that you need the breather hole in the design. open up the box in the store, before paying, to verify it yourself. it might take a couple tries, but you'll get the part you need. i just got a murray brand and it had the hole. looking online, the murray ones don't seem to have the holes in the pictures.

    • @AdmiralOffRoad

    Burping the system let it run for a while it's important that it reaches the operating temperature. Also I highly suggest you youse a torque wrench when installing those. But good video.

  • @larkton
    @larkton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I did this and it's leaking at the gasket. I used a sealant. Does that need time to set up?

    • @MikeR55
      @MikeR55 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thermostat might've partly slipped out when installing the housing. Watch Briansmobile youtube for a good tip to avoid that.

      Same issue for me. Followed every step perfectly and torqued bolts to spec. Did you figure out the issue?

    • @larkton
      @larkton ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickd1978 I couldn't get it to seal properly after a couple of attempts. Even letting the car sit overnight without cranking it. I had my mechanic do it and he used a Toyota sealer. Works great now.

    • @nickd1978
      @nickd1978 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larkton Thanks. I gave it another go, this time I used Right Stuff Gasket Maker to first seal the thermostat, and then the housing and that worked for me. I saw on another video that if you don't get the thermostat in there right it could drop out once you get the housing on. No leaks this time.

    • @paulkaufman4901
      @paulkaufman4901 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad Advice! That thermostat is designed to fail open so you don't overheat and crack a head. Other thermostats fail closed and cause over heating problems.

    • @182QKFTW
      @182QKFTW ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulkaufman4901 More likely to warp a head and blow the gasket, really. Also, if you have never replaced a "Normal" thermostat that has failed open, you haven't been around them long.
