Ep 65 Sailing Solo to 2 Rocks and an Emerald; Part 1: Rockall

- I do a bit of pre-departure maintenance, and then cast off my lines for Rockall -- an isolated Atlantic rock 250 NM Northwest of Ireland. A few maneuver demos (hove to, docking), the Volvo MDI bypass, a sad bird story, reefing strategy and some musical references to test your cultural depth. :-) 1030 NM sailed from La Rochelle to Rockall. Part 1 of two part series.
Hurrah! Good to see you back Patrick.
Ditto
Hurrah indeed.
One of the best channels ever - plain-speaking and with pinches of humour.
Phew...!
100%
Much appreciated. Fair winds to you.
What he said!
Great to see you again Patrick
I spent 2 hours last evening watching old episodes from Patrick only to be surprised and delighted by a new episode this evening. Fair Winds and Following Seas Patrick!
Me too 😂 Last night I was thinking to myself, when is Patrick going to post the next video? 😅
you should buy a lotto ticket this week :)
Welcome back dear Patrick. It's really a pleasure to have good news from you. All the best!!!
Welcome back, Patrick. Always a joy to see you with a tilted horizon behind.
Wonderful to have you back, Monsieur Laine! I cannot tell you how much I have missed being a phantom shipmate! Your videos are always such a delight. Thank you so very much!
I really look forward to watching your inspirational adventures. I love how the fit-out on your boats evolves - making life easier or safer. Brilliant as ever.
Patrick you have made my day.... no need to rush show us more.
welcome back Captain we have missed you and your wisdom
Welcome back Patrick! Excellent video. 👍 Fair winds, Chris
I'll have to check out where you are now. I lost the plot a while back. Many thanks.
Hey, Patrick!
What a pleasure, to see you back on Stage! 😃👍
Cheers Patrick. So happy you are able to share your sailing adventures with us again.
Hello dearest Patrick!!!
I was checking regularly your channel because I wanted to hear about your 2024 adventures.
Really happy to see you that you are well.
Thank you for entertaining and educating all of us on how to sail, music and geography.
I love your sense of humor. Seriously, it is a pleasure watching your episodes.
Your secret fan !!!
Far too kind. Thanks.
Happy to have you back Patrick!
The new boat is looking great, fair winds !
Thanks much Hugo, but speaking of new boats.....when do we get big tour? :-)
Another wonderful & informative video again Patrick. I know it's hard work, but we love your videos & keep them coming.
Many thanks Simon. Too kind.
We've missed you Patrick! Great to have you back....🎉
Awesome to have you back on our screens Patrick. Looks like an epic triangle you’re making. Thank you for taking us along and providing inspiration for all of us.
Welcome back for the ride Joel. Still having more fun than someone my age should be having. :-)
Rock on, Rockall, you'll never fall! (Well known song from my Irish childhood). Great to see you back, Patrick!
Haven't heard that one -- I'll have to google it. Fair winds.
Gracias Patrick! loved the heave-to lesson. You are a very kind teacher.
"the French Neil Diamond"... another surprise quote from you. 😂👏
Ha! Probably not the best comparison.....but it came to mind spontaneously.
What a charmer Mr Laine is! Thank you for taking us along, Skipper.
Amazing to see you back - you inspired me to sail the English Channel solo last summer. Doing it again this year from Portsmouth - Roscoff and back. You've been a real inspiration so thanks so much.
Great. That's a pretty challenging first solo crossing of the Channel. Bravo.
gentleman, humble et (trop) rare, et pourtant oh combien efficace !!
le John Paul Jones de la voile est de retour pour notre plus grand plaisir.
bon vent pour cette saison Patrick.
Beaucoup trop gentil. Bonne nav à vous.
Patrick happy to see you sailing again! As an old sailor with a bald head and grey beard I appreciate your music references from my early years. Sail true and looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you for the new video! They're always fun for me to watch. Fair winds.
Dear Patrick , love watching yr videos , thank you
What a pleasure having you back sailing Patrick. Jenna sails beautifully. !!!!
Excellent! Patrick is back with a full on video and with everything; in and out the water, wonderful :)
Hello Patrick, so nice to see you back again you have been away for far to long and very much missed.
Great to see you back Patrick. Im glad you decided to pick up the camera again. You and Kevin are amongst my favorite channels. Thank you so much for sharing. Best regards from Jarle
And fair winds to you too -- though I don't put myself in the same league as Kevin. He is a Master Jedi of sailing.
@@patricklaine6958 none of us is in the same league as Kevin, but as far sailing and content goes you are quite high up there, there is just a bit to many drama channels out ther claiming to be sailing channels. So thank you for just being a sailor. Best regards from Jarle
Always very nice to get an update from the French Aviator/Sailor! Fair seas my friend.
Welcome back Patrick, fantastic to sail with you again!
Hurrah!!! Finally, you're up and about. Patrick, as I've told you, we miss you and the vicarious thrills you give us. As I write this, I see 22,210 views! Hey Captain Laine, you have a marvelous audience.
Finally glad to see you back Patrick, wish you fair winds and following seas.
as usual, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest episode! thank you Patrick for sharing a glimpse of your time at sea. 👍
Thrilled you are back ! You made my day.
Some of the most enjoyable sailing content on YT! Thanks for taking us along Patrick!
Fascinating backups with the engine Patrick. Ghastly MDI failures. Still terrified by your speed machine! Another terrific video. A benign day off Rockall! Fabulous.
Many thanks James. This was a lot of fun --- and boring in the good sense of that world!
@@patricklaine6958 An uneventful passage is how we like them. It means its been a safe passage ... it is never ever boring doing things right
Its just wonderful to see you back on the waves and making more great videos, thanks a million Patrick.
Very happy to see you back, Patrick.
Ahh great to see another sailing video from you, Patrick! 🙂 Regarding birds: it never worked for me either when I tried to give them drinking water in bottle cap or small plate, but once I accidently splashed water on the cockpit floor and then the bird start drinking it, perhaps next time works for you too... 🙂
I might try that tactic. That said, most of those birds are in very bad shape by the time they get to our sailboats. The best we can hope is to make their end a little more comfortable. Sad.
Fantastic to see you back on the Ocean, Patrick.
Welcome back captain. We missed you. 😊
Ah brilliant to see you back at the helm for another great episode
And welcome back for the ride!
Welcome back and fun to see Rockall. I last saw it in the late 70's on board RRS Challenger when I was part of a team doing oceanographic stuff in the area!
I wonder what the depth of Helen's Reef was back then...... My charts show 17 meters, so I don't know how the ship ran aground there.
You are a modest Gentleman sailor! I enjoy your adventures, thank you. I also sail 'The Boothby way', and I am heading to Rockall, but have to run the gauntlet of the Med and then the orcas. I miss the North Atlantic. Fair winds!
Good luck with the Orcas. They seem to be quite active this season. :-(
Great to have you back Sir!
Great to have you back Patrick. Looking forward to watching your progress. Enjoy as much as I enjoy your channel
So happy to see another episode! Thank You Patrick!
Another super video Patrick. It brought back memories! Back in 1977, I sailed out to Rockall in a Rival 34 with three friends in the days before GPS. It was calm enough to land and I climbed to the top. After ten surreal minutes sitting on the remains of the light (which I understand is now long gone) I jumped off the steep side. Unforgettable experience.
I was tempted to land as well because a High was moving in with very calm wx, but there isn't really an anchorage there and as a solo sailor I couldn't risk leaving the boat. Sounds like you had a great adventure there.
Fantastique!! Season starts here! Bonjour Patrick! Phantom shipmate reporting for duty! No jankers for me!
You’ll need a good press or press tool to remove the bearing and seal.
Great to see you back sailing Patrick!! ⛵⛵
Yay! Welcome back Patrick! Thanks for the new adventure series and I really liked the Hove-to tutorial too.
He's alive!
Always a treat to watch. Really enjoy your subtle and not so subtle jokes.
Great to see you back Patrick
Great to have you back on TH-cam, looking forward to your travels in 2024 all the best from Kirkwall in Orkney
I'm angry with myself for not having stopped there a few years ago, and now I have by-passed them again-- so close, but yet so far. Still on my bucket list.
Thank you Patrick, fantastic to have you back with more episodes!
Technically speaking, I have missed you
Welcome back Patrick, I’ve missed you
Great to watch your adventures and great to listen to your informative commentary
You make everything look so calm and easygoing
It’s very inspiring
Fair winds to you captain

Thank you for taking the time to create this new episode.
Entertaining and informative as always.
Good to see you out sailing again, still clean shaven and neat after days at sea.
Fair winds to you and I’ll thankfully hitch the ride
welcome back Patrick always nice to see you
Great to see you in great spirits Patrick. Looking forward to this season's adventures. You bring something unique that makes us feel we are sailing with you like no other YT channels. Thank you ! 😊
Always looking forward to your adventures Patrick!
You sandbagged us! Great to see you back! Can’t wait to watch this newest video!
I’m stoked to see you again! Aloha!
I will enjoy this over the weekend but like so many I am glad to see you and hope you are well and look forward to travelling with you. Good health!!
I am happy to see a new video of your sailing again!
Great to have you back Patrick.
It's good to see you back, Patrick.
Good to see you back on the water! Your style of video making is great!
You are such a cool guy. Informed, intelligent, versatile. Thx for your content. 😊
Far too kind with your feedback 4X4. Many thanks.
long time waiting. When I get out from under the kids - I'll aim to follow your example
So glad you’re back
Heading Brest/Bénotet/Vannes June!
Good for you. Have a great adventure.
So happy to see you back. Look forward to more episodes.
My favourite youtube sailing channel mentioning my second favourite :) you on the keyboard and Kevin on guitar, would be fun to see. I spent the winter in Cahersiveen, the other side of Dingle bay, I had heard you were up that way recently.
Yeah, I considered going to that port at the entrance to Dingle Bay (whose name escapes me for the moment), but decided to opt for Dingle as I needed some fresh fruit, etc., for next leg. Love that area and wild west coast of Ireland.
You and Christian are my heroes and inspiration to keep on sailing!
.........Throw in Sam holmes just for kicks. Another really cool young man.
I'd love to meet Christian some day --- but he is a far more accomplished sailor than I am. He is in a class by himself. Fair winds to you.
Yes, yes, yes. The man is back. Merci monsieur. Merci.
Welcome back to Ireland Patrick. Great to see your videos again.
Getting a bit *modern* with that U2 reference Patrick 😉
Happy ur back, Patrick Fair Winds
Nice to see you again Patrick.
So pleased to see you back Patrick!
Well my friend,i think your good friend eric the viking has to take rather an example to you than the way around!!
No dramaweather sailing ,just sailing ,and if i may a say “ as a man with grey hair) as you mentioned yourself…. Hat off to you.
Also with an rather sporty 😳😳🤯🤯boat ,respect!
Fair winds to you !
Many thanks. I'm having more fun than anyone my age should be having. :-)
Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your videos. I had the same problem to start engine sometimes - had to use the screwdriver. A couple years ago, I removed that part and connected wires directely, and works perfectelly. Birds problem: these year will try with a cage and free them next harbour. All the best, dino
Yeah, I think putting them in a cage and releasing them at the next port is a good idea, if logistically a little bit difficult. That said, while I wouldn't hesitate transplanting a bird from Scotland to Ireland, to take an Irish bird and transplant it to the Caribbean is probably not a good idea (invasive species, etc.). Tough call.
On n'est peut être pas obligé de trouver quelque chose, mais juste se contenter de naviguer.. En ce qui me concerne, cela me conviendrait parfaitement...
Content de vous retrouver sur l'eau et merci pour le partage!
Bon vent!
Voyage, voyage, éternellement. Regarde l'océan. :-)
Hey Patrick, I always enjoy your videos and the knowledge you share. When you were at Rockall, you mentioned Helen's Reef, but there's also Hasselwood Rock, which is much closer. If you Google Hasselwood Rock, you'll see pictures of it with Rockall in the background.
Fair winds!
Yes, I actually saw it when I circled the Rock. I just didn't include it in the video. The captain of the ship claimed he ran aground on the reef, but my charts showed it to be 17 meters deep. ???
@@patricklaine6958 Admiralty Chart 2524 shows the rock to be (0.9 MT) around 0.1NM to the north of Rockall. It looks like it could thoroughly ruin your day.
Nice one Patrick, fair winds.
Finally!!! Good to see you’re doing well sir 🫶🏼
*Traffic produced some great music!
Great to see you on a new adventure!
I'm sure Erik, Kevin and many more are glad to see you too!
Steve Winwood is one of the most under-rated musicians of our time. Fair winds to you.
There's something very classy - and French - about sailing hove-to so you can cook a good meal. A pleasure to be accompanying your travels again.
This totally made my day Patrick, so happy to see you again! I enjoyed your subtle comments very much thank you, they really add a new level of spice to your video. Can't wait for part two. Fair winds
