i think they liked to give contestants a bit of a shot before they throw the sink at them, because it builds the drama of the show for them to make it far. they gave george, an italian guy, a sopranos question, and julie an aspiring music artist that absolute nirvana softball of a question.
She also got the You've Got Mail question though> I haven't seen that movie in 20 years but I can remember it was Shopgirl. Booklady??? cmon. That movie was so popular too.

Word is they are losing ground but I cannot find a definitive answer as to whether or not they are considered endangered or a stable population
I can't believe how easy US questions are (or at least were back then). In Russia, you could only win a million roubles back then, which was around $30k, but even pre-thousand roubles questions were harder in Russia than post-$32k questions in the US. Insane!!
