They clearly gave him the right answer by gasping when he said he wanted to walk away at 40:57. Chris even asks them to quiet down. I believe without that gasp that he wouldn't have changed his mind and played the question.

1:55 He was looking that up online. The way that Mike started reading the question by giving him the subject category is a red flag, but the bigger one is always when the phone-a-friend just goes silent for best part of the 30 seconds, only to blurt out a sudden correct answer out of nowhere just as the call cuts off. I know that the internet was a more difficult place to get an answer within 30 second in 2000, but it was just about doable.
