      I was one of those who enjoyed Braveheart more at the time. But looking back with the perspective of a couple of decades' reflection, I think this film holds up far better. Braveheart was flashier, and shot for a more epic tone -- a fight for a whole nation's freedom, as opposed to a Highland clan leader's dispute with a wealthy aristocrat. But I think this movie has aged better. It's not because of historical accuracy; in terms of detail, the two films are about equally historically inaccurate. But with Rob Roy, the inaccuracies are merely of detail (e.g. the Duke of Argyll, to whom Rob Roy eventually turns for support, in actual history was _not_ a Jacobite, as portrayed in the film, and was loyal to the British crown). With Braveheart, the inaccuracies are all-encompassing, to include anachronistic nationalist sentiments that are just out of place in the 13th century. Also, with Braveheart, it gets the Hollywood treatment: the heroes are just _too_ perfectly selfless and heroic, the villians are just _too_ diabolically villainous. It's all brilliantly filmed, and highly entertaining, but over the top. This movie is better grounded and just feels more plausible and realistic.

      @swatkabombonica4103 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Rob Roy, in my humble opinion, is much better. Guess I look at it from a women's perspective, imagining perfect men should behave, look at the world, like Rob(Liam) does in this move. Somehow character fits perfectly, so naturally with Liam, and his looks. Both are grate masculine roles, but can't see that nobility, all that that men should be, in Mell the way I see it in Liam here. I always get back to this movie.

      And archeology already proved there were Goidelic Celts in what became the Scottish side of Dal Riata just as long as they were in what became Ireland.
      And Ulster was settled by 17th century Southern-Scottish and Northern-English farmers.

He also knew that even if he could kill Rob Roy, that the rest of the MacGregors would hunt down him and his crew as a matter of honor. He needed to show that he put up some kind of fight.

    Even though Braveheart was the the big deal here in wee Scotland. Well tbf all over around this time.
    This seemed like a better film, (story telling wise I mean). Maybe it's about the wardrobe dep't, and attention to detail, that cuts it with me . Plus the places are all familiar to us West Coast Scotsmen.
    Don't get me wrong If you weren't moved after watching Braveheart you're half deid.
    I think because the Wallace was a great hero of mine. I noticed a lot of well shite. Doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Just a bit to many whoppers mixed in. What puts me off watching it most, is the Blue painted dials. Either a reference to the ancient Picts or the not so ancient Hampdenites (better known as the Tartan -tran- Army)

      Wrong, it was 1603 to 1774, there was a reprieve by Charles II between 1661 and 1693, when William III re-imposed the proscription against Clan Gregor as a punishment for them supporting the Jacobite cause. The proscription was finally ended by George III in 1774 and MacGregors were given the same rights as any British citizen.
      The main reason the MacGregor's were proscribed was the battle of Glen Fruin (February 7th 1603) when a force of 350 MacGregor's on foot fought 800 Colquhoun's, 500 on foot and 300 on horseback. The battle turned in to a rout after the MacGregor's led the Colquhoun horsemen into the bog at the head of the glen which wouldn't support their weight, between 140 to 200 Colquhoun men died against only 5 MacGregor fatalities. James VI was so outraged at the MacGregor's slaughtering so many Colquhoun's that he abolished the MacGregor name altogether.
