    I had to laugh when you talked about the bird telling you he wanted to go to bed! I had a mitred conjure named Cherry Garcia that seemed to use appropriate language often. When he was ready to go he would start saying " I wanna go to bed! Can I go to bed! Go to bed, go to bed! ". If you didn't take him right away, he would say very loudly with a lot of attitude. " What's your problem ! I wanna go to bed! His first person was a little old man, and he sounded just like a crotchety old man!! He was in love with my husband who was very flattered of course, and made the big mistake of encouraging lovey-dovey behaviour. I tried to explain to him what would happen if he kept on , but he never had a bird and didn't believe me, so when the bird started giving him hard blood-drawing bites on his ears, and then not correcting him in the right way, my husband made me sell him! I was heartbroken, and told my husband no more birds for him! I rescued a little 11 year old sun conjure named Petrie who was missing a lower wing due to amputation because of a flying accident. My husband loves him but he is bonded to me. He is now 23 years old and he is like my kid! If he dies before me it is going to be a horrible experience I may not survive! I know that sounds silly, but I am afraid it may be true! I am 73 so I may go before him. Sorry I sound so. morbid, but companion birds are different in some way than our pet dogs and cats in my mind! I am a new subscriber and enjoy your videos so much!! Sniffers cracked me up!! Thank you for your time and effort to educating us and loving your little angels!

    Our IRN has a very clear call when he wants to go to bed. It's usually after he's had a light meal or snack and he's hanging around on or near the open cage -he then goes inside and starts the call. I walk up to the cage and he dashes over to his sleeping perch, we then do a little singing routine and cover the cage to a little tune, same every night

    • @gigi4713
      @gigi4713 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He tends to start this call about an hour and a half to two hours after dark, by the minute! Hence, his bedtime changes with the seasons. Now he go to sleep rather early, around 645, in the winter. In the summer, it's obviously much later. My question, is it OK for him to determine his sleep and wake time based on the light patterns of sundown/ sunset? Thanks for bearing with me with this long post😊

    • @MahasTreasurebox
      @MahasTreasurebox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Karen Lynne mine too! He looks at the sky, and if the curtains are covering it, he just sort of "knows"what time it is... He can sense it, and I can never fool him! Also at night, even with the lights on, he's part blind and he feels very uncomfortable staying up till late...

    • @MahasTreasurebox
      @MahasTreasurebox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Karen Lynne definitely it's okay, I think it's just their nature... That's what they're supposed to do... Keeping him up way past their bedtime (long into the night) I don't think is very easy on them, at least it's not on my parrot he's very uncomfortable at night and he's pretty much half asleep...

    Always about 30 minutes after my blue quaker Indy goes to bed I start getting anxious and missing him like crazy and wish he was back with me to cuddle. I feel kinda like I have become a bit obsessive, but I can't help it, I just love him so much! He sort of just landed with my family somewhat unexpectedly, and he is is my first bird. I honestly had no idea I could love the little feather fluff ball as much as I do. I never in a million years expected to feel the way I do about him. It's actually quite profound.

      Ivy Munro Awe!! This melted my 💙. I do bird rescue all over the USA & own 19 birds that all have been sexually abused or physically/emotionally. Birds are such loving & smart wonderful critters & I know I can't imagine my life w/out them. Bless your 💙 Doll as I just love peeps like you! You just made my week!!! BTW, if you ever come across a Dove @ your local Humane Society grab it as I promise you you'll love it!! Best cuddlers ever & they'll stay on you for more cuddles all day every day & sleep/nap on you!! Just gotta take them to their food/water bowl every 45 minutes to snack & they'll fly back to you for more love! Scratches to your FeatherBaby!!! 🐾🐦🐾

    Great tips! It is interesting how each individual bird has their own set of behaviors they do for bed time. My cockatiel will go up to his top perch when he sees me reach for the lamp to turn it off, and when i pull the cover over his cage, I hold out the flaps and he seems to think this is me opening my wings, and he will spread his wings for a few seconds before I pull the cover over completely.
    I love your channel by the way.

    Ahhh I'm so excited to see your channel grow! I have a suggestion for another segment, maybe you can do it monthly! You could do a Parrot Advice Q&A, since I see so many people ask you questions in the comments. You could just go through and answer them as you see them! I know you're super busy, but if for some reason you need an idea there you go

    Cute top, btw! Thank you for REALLY explaining this. When new bird owners hear this from more than one parent, it helps. Plus, I can point others to these vids so new moms and dads know that I am not just squawking out of my bum! I've been around my babies for awhile and have learned a lot, so having others that know what I know repeat it really helps me enforce the importance of these tips!

    I do a 10 to 10 routine as well, it gives me time to do things after they go to bed and before they wake up. Recently I’ve started getting one of our birds out for half an hour-an hour later than the others, which has been helpful since it gives each an opportunity to spend individual time with me just chilling, without trying to teach them new things, playing, etc.

      Right? Keep it simply beautiful around the birds! Clean and air quality is two important aspects to consider before ever committing a lifetime to the bird! Too many birds are not cared for properly and then left, abandoned and further become troubled by lack of knowledge to care for a bird.

    My 2 budgies have always went outside to have their cages hung next to our Galah, they will get excited and chirp away whenever they know I'm about to take them out there. My maroon bellied conure comes out to have breakfast with me and we will sit in the kitchen on my computer. She screams whenever I don't include her in breakfast, especially when it means she doesn't get a sip of my soy milk hehe. At night the budgies tend to like staying up for awhile and will fly to the cages when they're ready for bed, my conure just climbs back in her cage and puts herself in her hut to tell me she's ready for bed :)

    I have a parrotlet and a Green Cheek conure. I am a night owl. So, I move their cages (thank god for wheels) to the main floor bedroom and put both cages in the hallway where the closets are, cover the cages with sheets, and then drop the dark sheet I have to cut out the ambient light. That side of the house is BRIGHT in the morning, so I have blocked the window directly facing that hallway. I put them to bed between 9 and 9:30pm and they squawk to get out close to 11am. Before they get up is my time with the dog and cat, and when they get up, it's either check point training with the parrotlet ( I take him out and we now work on step up training because I have done everything all the experts say to do, and this abused boy wants things his way and it's time to interact.). After Yogi, it's time for Gazoo and her step up work. They are so funny even if they bite me and HATE each other.

    To much routine cause parrots to *expect everything at a certain time* switch it up a little. 9am-9pm. Then 10am-10pm ect. Good to have variety of habits so they aren't in structure routine. A little routine but mix up time of in & out of the cage. Marlene you are awesome. Thanks for all your videos you share with us!

    • @patstokes3615
      @patstokes3615 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why in the world would you think that switching a routine is good for an animal. I only makes them stressed. If one day you you leave them in a cage too long they don't know what is going on. They can't count on you for security if your alway changing things. If you feed them when they walk up and them you decide not to it can make them wonder if or when you will feed them. If I even move a piece of furniture it can bring on a great deal of worry for even my cat. I can even see the fear in his eyes. Very, very bad idea to mix them up. You will only make them insecure and nerves.

    I’m nowhere near ready for a bird at this time in my life but I have a strong career in the future and so does my girlfriend. We want to buy a house someday where i would rip out the floor in one room and put in rubberized sealed concrete like you see in really nice workshops with a drain in the floor. Make it really easy to keep clean, have a shower built in for bath time, and have the birds cages all nicely laid out. Also have a sink refrigerator and prep area all nicely laid out for their meals. Then a back yard with a nice big play area full of toys like something at least 15x20x10. Then they have of course the rest of the house to roam when people are home to play with us and our kids someday.

    LOL!!! I have a very large, but gentle very vocal YNA named Cricket and am fostering a Meyer's parrot and they each tell me in their way when they want to go to bed. Cricket uses his words, and says "are you tired? do you want to go to bed?". Lily, the meters parrot will pace back and forth on her perch and sound off with her squeaks. If I don't move and get busy, the squeaks turn into growls and shrieks! The routine is Cricket gets his medicine/supplements, and fresh water, and if necessary food. Then both get a love/cuddle, and a piece of apple or grape and each of them has their own song while I get the blankets ready. I tell each of them "I love you", Cricket always responds with several "I love yous" and they get covered and lights out. In the morning, I am greeted with a chorus of "GOOD MORNINGS" and we sing our good morning song! They get out of sorts if I don't follow the "rituals"

    I recently started working night shifts, and it's very hard to give my birds the right sleep. I also do not have another room to put them in. I usually ask a family member to tuck them in when I work, to cover them and to leave on a night light. They are cockatiels and spook in complete darkness. When I come home in the morning, I try to be quiet as possible and go right to bed. What other things could I I do to give them better sleep?

      Rachel Gohlman Hi Rachel!! I'm sorry I'm a year late seeing this. I do bird rescue all over the USA for over 20+ years now & currently have 19 birds of my own that have been sexually/physically/emotionally abused. I do have 4 Cockatiels (Tiels) of my own as well too & yes these whittle guys/gals are super prone to night terrors more than any other birds. Unfortunately Tiels don't see in the dark so a nightlite is the best idea ever & you didn't mention if you're covering their cage up @ night as well? I'm hoping so because as you know any bug (a fly, moth, mosquito, anything w/wings flies into their cage @ night & boom we've got broken blood feathers & a lot of Tiels have got that disease where they can't clot their blood & just bleed everywhere from 1 broken blood feather & these babies don't have much blood to spare) gets in & your doomed!!! Is it possible for you to put them to bed prior to work & wake them when you get home so that your FeatherBabies are seeing your face again? If not, have you thought about changing their bedtime schedule so that maybe you're the one waking them up as we both know how much sleep they need & only the owner knows how much sleep each Tiel actually requires. You've got some wiggle room here to play w/Doll & I hope you've been enjoying your new shift. I'm here always if I can be of any service!!! 🐾🐦🐾

      hello! i’m just seeing this comment right now, i hope everything’s well. but if you need tips i got you! i suggest you cover your birds cage with a blanket. it will help them have a better sleep and in this video, marlene explained why you should cover your birds cage as well. be quiet as possible and make sure you are making bedtime a good thing. for example after i put my conure in its her cage i give her a treat to reward her and let her know that bedtime one is a positive thing. off topic but i recommend that you give as much attention to your bird as possible. birds are social animals meaning that need attention and company. give them toys to destroy, foreign for seeds, and toys to simulate their minds. since your swaying most of the time i highly recommend toys and maybe for one of your family members to try to bong with your bird. also! try to squeeze in time with your bird as much as you can. goodluck!

    I just subscribed and love your channel. You give good advice. I had a cockatiel for 12 years and now I am adopting from C.A.A.R.E in Fargo, ND a Umbrella Cockatoo that loves to cuddle. Any advice for the first few days/weeks? It's my first big bird.

    I'm not sure if this is true for other birds but cockatiels can't see at all in the dark and they get freaked out if they don't have some light (at least my cockatiel did), so I always put him in a dark room with a night light for bed instead of covering him up and that prevented him from freaking out and falling off his perch.

    Woah. I need to get my bird to bed earlier! Or are they like humans, where routine is more important than the actual number of hours. My cockatiel wakes up with (or before) me at about seven in the morning, and goes to bed with me anywhere from 9:30 to 10:00 PM on an average night. Should I be getting him to bed earlier. He doesn't seem to be that cranky, and I spend most time with him later in the afternoon.

    • @lynnenyc5037
      @lynnenyc5037 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps a little earlier would be better. They really do need at least 10-11 hours uninterrupted sleep minimum.

    If I remember correctly, then you should probably use a green blanket for Jersey, because the color green has a calming effect on animals.

      Alyssa Grasso you just start doing that Doll. I know my bigger birds start screaming when their tired & ready for bed despite it being bedtime so I'll have to stop what I'm doing & play w/them for a bit & burn their energy out usually for an hour prior to bedtime. Don't be surprised w/you changing your birds hours that your FeatherBaby will/might wake up & start talking/whisteling @ 6am bright & early for a few moments, but as soon as they figure out oh Mommy isn't coming to get me & it's still dark/quiet, they'll go back to sleep!

    They are like sweet little souls when you want to make sure they know you're not mad at them and that everything is just as it should be. I wonder what their true relationship is with each other in the wild. It makes me so sad to think of how mistreated so many, many birds are. It is out of ignorance that people just haven't a clue who these creatures are.

    Hi Marlene ... we just connected on IG I'm the gal who's considering an Umbrella (2nd time) I can't remember with Sammy if he woke up in the morning when he heard me moving around OR did he wake up when I took his covers off. That's my question ... if I put him to sleep later but I'm up earlier will he stay sleeping or want to get up when he hears me moving around? What's the best way to handle? I go to bed around midnight and am up at 7 AM ... I would like 10 AM - 10 PM ... but I'm thinking he will hear me from 7 AM and want up and out ... what are your thoughts? 💞
