This was such an amazing conversation! A perfect conclusion to an important series. Thank you so much to the whole team for all the work planning and sharing these conversations- following Dr. Wachter on twitter and watching all the covid grand rounds was literally a life saver for me during the pandemic- especially given that our federal leadership was so bizarre on it's face- in contrast to the oddities of the president's briefings, your work gave me the feeling that I had a front row seat to the highest level of understanding as it developed, mostly put in terms plain enough for even an elementary school teacher like me to follow- I will be forever grateful- thank you

Well... If they wear those MAGA Hats, the Blood won't be as visible when their heads explode from watching this (to whom it applies). I'll be paying attention to South Korea 1st going into the next Pandemic.. along with the UC System and Vincent Racaniello/Columbia University. The next "killer virus" will probably originate in South America thanks to wholesale deforestation of the Amazon. Nice goin' Jair!!!
Now.. Why South Korea? S.KOR pays the USA $800,000,000 yearly to maintain a presence of 25,000 Military personnel (oh.. the USA and S.KOR "talk"). S.Kor has one of top 3 or 4 Medical Communities as a Nation. 2015: S.Kor put down a MERS-COV outbreak caused by a Man traveling in the Middle East with fewer than 50 Korean deaths and the Virus never left their shores. To date: S.Kor has 2,012 COV19 Deaths.. So.. If South Korea were the same size as the USA (or at scale) they would have only suffered 12,770 Deaths.
Forget about China.. I can't be convinced that South Korea didn't try to warn the Orange "Know it All" that this was a serious problem. Mr. Slavitt outlined the problems with going public against Trump. Greg Popovich for President/ So much more qualified to deal with Eastern Bloc espionage than Donald Trump is at stealing/lying/being a rat of a human being.

The people who are not vaccinated now do not want it. You cannot force people to get the vaccination. I was vaccinated four months ago and it was a personal choice. If people don’t want the vaccine, fine but if you do get COVID it’s on you Let’s now investigate the true origins of Covid to make sure this never happens again

Good information, I appreciate the comprehensive update. Great having Andy Slavitt on as well, but you lost me at 41:00 as the discussion digressed once again into: "what to do with the uneducated population that remain unvaccinated?" That whole discussion is loathsome to me and lacks empathy, something this panel seems to excel at. Many educated people have chosen not be vaccinated yet and they have very good reasons for their decision. Do not broadly generalize all of the unvaccinated as uneducated tin foil hat people, time will tell on this mRNA science, we shall see...

    • @catblue2857

Agree with you. Against my better judgement and at the urging of family and friends, I got vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine. I had already spent 4 months in South America, but their incidence did not spike until I left. If I weren’t going to return there, I would not have gotten the vaccine. I am not convinced that it is the reason for the decrease in cases in the US.

    • @ski8799

@@catblue2857 thanks for the reply. I want these vaccines to be safe and sincerely hope that I am wrong. There is a growing pool of scientists and academics that are concerned about the pervasive groupthink and nearly obsessive attachment to these mRNA vaccines. We simply don’t have enough data on this new mRNA science so I have decided to wait until they are approved and licensed. Bret Weinstein, an evolutionary biologist had the man that invented the mRNA methodology on his podcast. He has serious concerns, that was my wake up call. Bret Weinstein is all over TH-cam, these are not uneducated people, these are scientists and PhDs on his podcast. It’s a scary time, I hope that they are wrong, I really do, for all of us. Israel C19 is on the rise due to Delta strain and quarantine measures are pending. However, C19 numbers in Delhi and a few Indian states where cases dropped by 97% due to ivermectin still remain at the same level, though health authorities removed Ivm from home kits. Apparently, people are still using it regardless. It could change if their health authorities threaten people and/or make IVM unavailable to ‘please’ WHO but it will always be a strikingly convincing proof that Ivm prophylaxis and early treatment is the only hope to bring our lives back to normal.

You seem to have sloughed the point that we navigated in a fog between Scylla and Charybdis...
We had both a novel dangerous medical and novel dangerous economic crisis, both without ready responses in times of high uncertainty and danger. Not acknowledging both does not fully report the constraints and dangers we faced. To develop nonpartisan solutions for next time, we might at least correctly state the problem.
Even today the medical experts do not acknowledge the 1929-like economic crisis the country faced in March 2020, even as we faced a 1918- like pandemic. We needed to manage both. This discussion today still does not even acknowledge that duo-dilemna.
In WW2, Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin chose Hitler first, but the US fought a Two Ocean War.

Thank you for this report. Can we discuss the myocarditis cases? Let's presume that the 236 figure in the right column is incorrect and put it back down to 226 cases that meet the CDC definition. 180 people made a full recovery. 15 remain hospitalized. 180 + 15 = 195 subtract that from the 226 and that leaves 31 remaining cases unaccounted for. What happened to them? They didn't recover but they're not in the hospital. Are there deaths? If so, how many? Are any permanently disabled? How many cases? What is the current outcome and then prognosis for these individuals? What are the data? Please, also, can you state what meets the CDC definition of a true case of myocarditis? If the other cases that were reported as myocarditis don't meet that threshold, are those cases now considered "yet to be determined" adverse reactions? That's quite a few that are getting removed. Thank you, in advance. It's important that we understand these definitions and processes.

As per the latest information provided by CDC, 300 cases reported so far out of more than 20 million adolescents and young adults have been vaccinated in the U.S.. It is around or less than 0.0015% what is rare but worth investigating the causes. The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices group meeting has been rescheduled due to the Juneteenth holiday for this week to discuss. Whatever we're aware of is aligned with CDC's report as well that most cases have been mild so far. “The vast majority have fully resolved with rest and supportive care.” .To answer your question, no death has been reported yet from this. Please also note we don't know yet the preexisting conditions of these patients like whether they had obesity, diabetes and or heart or any health related issues. Hope this answer your questions.

@@medscigeek7253 Thank you for your reply. Though I am going to express frustration, I do appreciate the response. I'm aware of most of what you've communicated here. Can you tell me your position? Are you from the UCSF School of Medicine?
Respectfully, the language you've chosen is, though surely unintentional, seemingly insensitive when you say, "but worth investigating". These aren't just numbers, they're young people who deserve to have responsible adults looking after their well being. It's not worth investigating, it absolutely warrants, demands, requires, investigation. In addition, cases are under reported (and I know this even from personal knowledge of physician non-reporting) but even taking these numbers alone at face value, there is still an obvious imbalance and a definite safety signal in this nascent, evolving database. I hope the CDC execs and staff enjoyed their potato salad and beer on their holiday while the vaccine rollout continued, undeterred and unfettered by pesky bioethical concerns, across the country. Meanwhile, there are other countries, as well as the WHO, not approving or not recommending vaccinations for children and young adults, and not just based on supply considerations, but also based on lack of evidence to do so.
To those adversely affected, it doesn't matter if it's "rare". The pharmaceutical companies, government, employers, etc. are immune to any liability. Who pays these medical and hospital bills, time off work to address, etc.? Let's keep it real. There is more financial coverage for young people who accrue medical bills from contracting the actual SARS-CoV-2 infection itself than from that caused by the vaccine and we don't know the long-term effects endured. Myocarditis complications can last a lifetime.
It is negligent that the CDC so nonchalantly rescheduled their "emergency" meeting. Doctors, nurses, patients...they all show up on holidays. The CDC needs to get to work and be the public facing voice of reason and accountability here. In the meantime they should have made a statement to hold off until they had the meeting. You want to handle vaccine hesitancy? Again, with all due respect, tone-deaf messaging and ridiculously poor optics are not the way to do so.

Later they can advice to either reinstall or maintain the banned flights. Pandemics of this proportion call for pro active action. How not to do it, is what happened with India and the UK where the approach was: well, we can't ban flights before we understand the data. This approach resulted in: Let's make Delta the dominant variant here, so we can have a close look at it.

The film "Seeing 2020: The censored science" will be shown with discussion and Q&A afterword. You can watch the trailer on youtube. @8Truth Seeking Useful link but rude remark. I've looked at the site. 4,800 reports - that's reports, not cases, as VAERS makes it clear there is often more than one report per case. Cases are reports of serious adverse health events that occur around the time of vaccination and VAER makes it clear that most events are generally not due to vaccine but they do assess each report. I am thinking a maximum of a few hundred serious outcomes out of all those millions of vaccines. How many lives have been saved by the vaccines? I expect you have checked that out.

In March I had an allergic reaction immediately after the first dose of Pfizer. I was given infusion of steroid to halt the reaction. Did that steroid void my immune response and nullify the dose? Can I assume I have the high immunity after one dose that seems evident in the UK data? from the Delta variant?

It could be you are allergic to the non vaccine related filler.. PEG used in the vaccine is thought to induce allergic reaction in some ppl... check with your doc for the issue you raised. You could consider 2nd jab using different vaccine but let the doc knows what happened in the first one

This discussion was informed, and could have gone so many ways. What was the purpose of the " blame the other side tone" of the inquiry?
I expected two of the most consistent, most informed and positive voices during this crisis, to objectively cover how this occured and the larger questions of how do we improve rather than wasting time complaining about those who emphasize a different set of priorities. Though it is natural to be tired and frustrated, leaders provide paths to solutions.
Some parts of this were like listening to Flemish chew on Walloons.
Sorry to belly ache. I am so tired of the unproductive, knee jerk, finger pointing rather than dispassionate objective fact finding and analysis.
Your efforts are amazing and you do UC proud. I look forward to the solutions.

I have a cousin that has it had ObamaCare insurance. Only family member I am aware of that applied for this insurance. Her employer had offered retirement health insurance. But once Obama implemented Obamacare that retirement package was ditched by the employer and she was instructed to go get your own. Her and her husband worked at the same place, unfortunately. She told me that the ObamaCare was a huge expense and waste of money. It cost her and her husband hundreds a month premiums. They had huge deductibles and copays. She said the only way they would ever be able to use ObamaCare was if either one of them had a major illness. And at that point they would have to pay thousands out of their own pocket. The only thing I am aware of with ObamaCare was the penalty for people on their federal taxes if they chose NOT to take an asinine insurance offered by the Obama administration. That was a huge joke. And you are lying about President Trump trying to take away pre-existing conditions. You said it yourself, it didn’t hurt anyone. As a Demonic state you are lying.

Actually, the author specifically said that the handling of the pandemic would have been just as good under a republican or democratic administration. He clearly said either. He did say that Trump's wish to 'banish' the pandemic, as if it did not exist/wasn't a big deal (600,000 dead later, at this point) - that his ego in this regard DID show as a 'deadly sin'.
Anywho, it was not about trashing conservatives, but more about how the wealthier/middle class and upper could sit comfortably ordering groceries online, while those who are/were dying are/were those at the gas station/groceries/warehouses/meat packers . . . these are the people we must thank for putting their lives on the line - so much suffering.

First time I saw your podcast on youtube and found it very informative. However, the Andy person looked like he had been selected from a group of homeless men who roam the streets of San Francisco. If he wishes to refrain from shaving and dress in a T-shirt in his house, fine; but to subject the viewers to someone who displays such a lack of consideration for them is an insult. I know nothing about him; he may be another Einstein, but I could not watch enough of his presentation to discover that. I know Californians think they are so cool by flouting all standards of appropriate behavior, but he was disgusting to look at. If he must appear, then put a nice picture of him on the screen and let him talk.
