I used to love watching this with my father (R.I.P.) as a child. I later became a Marine after surviving Parris Island in 1984. Semper Fi to all who earned the Title!
That hygiene inspection at Camp San Onofre, Camp Pendleton was up in the hills after dark. It was cold outside and we only wore drawers and boots to be inspected by a 1st Lt. It was one time only. On to the tent and I slept nicely.
Wow, he used the term “pogie bait.” The first time I heard that phrase was when I went to basic training at Ft. Benning in 2007…. Some things never change!
That is factually incorrect. I'm the son of a WWII and Korean War Marine. About 40,000 Marines were drafted in WWII, 25,000 during Korea and another 40,000 during Vietnam.
@@burtmurphy6261 I know most of these guys here were real marines (and on active duty), but I just wonder if any of them could still be living as we speak.
🗣️FLASHBACK: PI🌴SC., 1976. My platoon 286, F. CO., 2nd BLT., actually stayed in old barracks like THIS with these old RACKS for one week on the ISLAND 🏝️. We were just coming back from our SMAMP TRAINING and had to wait one week till the brick 🧱 Company Barracks opened up one of its decks for us. We were just a few weeks away from graduation. S/F🇺🇸
Way better! When I went to basic, I kept expecting it to get like Full Metal Jacket, but it never got that bad. Expecting the worst made it so much easier!

Same year I went! SFMF
Actually, it's a realistic view of Boot Camp. I was in the USAF but my experience was pretty much a mirror of The D.I.
Ahh wonderful memories.mcrd.san diego.june 1979.
I was hoping to see where Sgt. Moore gets on the one 'recruit' who doesn't properly trim his 'sideburns', telling him, "you ain't carrying no guitar!"

The term "pogey" is the world term for pussy. Look it up. 😂
Heard that term in '73, Ranger school. Earned the nickname Ranger pogey bait although I ha ve no idea where it came from or how I got it.
They called it pogie bait in Marine boot camp in 1966!!!

I definitely remember the metal trash cans. Yes, we even had those as alarm clocks in the USAF. LOL
Ah yes...San Antonio, butt cans, foot lockers, open bay barracks, etc. Boy was that a long time ago.

Sadly most, if not all the actors here have passed on.
Most of the cast where actually active Marines

@@dianarendon4047 Gotcha, I wonder the same thing.
Gone yes, but they left this film as a legacy to us all. 🫡
Probably still many around. Assuming an 18 year old recruit, around mid eighties now.

Can any old Marines out there comment on the accuracy of this late 50s DI?
Drills like Jack Webb, drills like Gunny Hartman, they were all legends. The military now is a joke. Garryowen forever, 4-7 CAV, 73 Easting, Iraq

This movie is hilarious.
