That’s the trick for something like this. It can’t be too silly or it loses the verisimilitude required to engage and it can’t be too serious or it loses the thing that makes the anime interesting. This adaptation really hits the sweet spot.

@@submandave1125 Yeah finding that sweet spot is what most anime adaptations fails at.
That is what makes it so good! They didn´t change it to be something more "cinimatic" or personal. They did it as close to the manga/anime as possible. That is what makes it so damn good. It respects the original source material.
Actually Monkey D. Is his family's name. They use the Japanese standard of putting the family name before the given name. So he's Luffy and his family has the name Monkey D. You'll meet a few other family later on.
Wow, I completely forgot about the fact that the live action didn't change that. Probably since I'm used to OP and other anime.

@@DBT1007Yeah, he was, and he kind of admits that he just let his imagination do it's own thing without taking too much time for planning.
However, I kinda like it that way. It's his own fantasy setting, and I honestly can't imagine One Piece without randomness and all those silly details. He should not regret it because without it One Piece would not have that charm it's known for.
Easily the best adaptation of a manga/anime I’ve ever seen. This show is excellent. The fact it had such a quick second season confirmed by Netflix should tell you how successful it’s been.
Also the names in One Piece are given in the Japanese style of family name first and given name last, so the reverse of what you’re use to. Luffy and Zoro are their given names.
To expand on the name thing, not just Japan but other counties that historically within Chinese sphere of influence (china, japan, korea, vietnam, etc.) also place family name first, then middle names, then given name last.
The best live action anime adaptation is for sure Rurouni Kenshin, but it's based loosely on historical Japan, so it's not like it was a jump. This is actually a surprise its not a cringefest. Hopefully Netflix learned after butchering Cowboy Bebop lol
Okay, just a heads-up, unless the show says a character has eaten devil fruit, assume they haven’t. There are characters who are just insanely powerful without it, like Shanks.
You must be thinking of the anime or manga, Shanks is not shown swimming in this.

Robin is season 2 material. And Monkey D. is his family name. In Japan, the family name goes first, so they kept it that way for this adaptation. And at 25:23 it's 15 mil. Alvida had 5 mil.

Monkey is actually his last name. From what I've learned over the years of watching anime and reading manga, to us Westerners, they start with your last name to tell what family you come from, and then follow it up with your first name that you go by within that family. Also, anyone correct me if you have a better way of saying it. 😅

You're absolutely correct the first time. Every phone line is a special unique snail. Transponder snails is the full name. Best not too think about it too deeply though and just suspend disbelief, besides they are hilarious.
I haven't watched the anime and I cried like 5 times throughout an entire season😂. It's really good.
The end of episode seven really gets me but yeah so many heartfelt moments

Everyone expected the worst case with this live-action, many was skeptical but then, thanks to the author this was probably the one of rarest great adaptation of the live-action history XD
The first episode was a adaptation of almost 4 anime episodes, meanwhile the 2nd episode had some changes from the original: like Zoro vs Cabaji was cut, the men with white fur (30:41) its Mohji the beast tamer but they cut Richie (his giant lion) and also the story of the doggo that appeared around 44:27 with the mayor (the doggo's name is Chouchou)
NOTE: keep in mind the headband name "YASOPP" (around 38:34)

Monkey is his surname, Luffy is his given name. This is common in Japanese that the family or clan name comes before the given.
The way he said it, it seem like first name middle initial and last name. Monkey D. Luffy.

It's not so much that Luffy doesn't know how to swim (when he was talking with Shanks in the comic I think he boasted that he was a great swimmer). Devil Fruit users lack buoyancy, so they'll literally sink to the bottom if someone doesn't intervene. Once they're submerged, the sea also saps their physical strength, so it limits their ability to compensate.
Luffy being a great swimmer is an anime only thing, no such thing is ever said in the manga.

All the phones, and eventaully cameras, are in fact psychic snails (Transponder snails or Den Den Mushi).
So let me give you guys my opinion on this. When I saw one piece for the first time, I was 7 and rn I’m 25. so it’s been almost a decade 😅.
I fall in love the very first time I saw it and it still keeps my breath away in some episodes, especially the recent arc.
Oda (the creator) made us cry, made us laugh and most certainly made us fall in love with this amazing world of OP.
When I saw the announcement of an live action Me and probably everyone else was skeptical, but I can tell you guys with just a couple criticism here and there they did an incredible job. The art, the actors, the cgi. Everything is top notch. And it does the job on introducing non op watchers into this amazing world. Even tho I can assure you this can not, absolutely not replace the anime. If you find time, even if it’s just 3 episodes a day, it’s worth to watch it. I promise. Some people (like me) already got attached with the intro. Some getting attached with the first 1-2 seasons and at latest in arc Enies Lobby which is around 264.

I loved this show. I've never seen the anime. I think the practical sets made it just that much better. If you watch some behind the scenes stuff you'll see all the sets and it's pretty amazing.

It's a breath of fresh air seeing the writers, actors, producers, author etc enjoying and respecting each other to have this show 😂

I love your reactions and I'm so happy you're doing the OP live action! :) As a fan of the manga and anime for 20 years, they did such a great job! They changed some things, but I don't mind those, it still works and they truly kept the spirit of One Piece. The set design and CGI look like they're done with such great care, you can really tell that everyone who was working on this has a lot of respect for the source material.
Edit: omg, I just realized that the music at 26:44 is a rendition of "the very very strongest"!! It sounds so good! :D

Vkunia casually forgetting that she already watched the best Live Action Anime/Manga adaptation ever, Alita: Battle Angel.
The whole season was great. I binge watched it in two days.
Love the show! Quick note, in Japan and Korea the family name (last name) is first, so “Luffy’ is actually his first name, same with Zoro etc.
Within the first 5 minutes, they show Alvida's wanted poster, Koby saying "Yes, Captain Alvida" when called by the woman, and responding "Captain Alvida" when asked who the most powerful pirate in the sea is by that woman, and only after Alvida got punched out of her own ship, this person went "so maybe that is not Robin?" How are you watching something without seeing or listening properly though? I could've understood if it was a subbed thingy, but damn that was an interesting start to my first experience with this channel.

Otherwise, it's just an old man yelling at the skies. How are you even commenting on something that isn't even there (Robin)? I understand you gotta stand out, but please don't do it at the cost of sacrificing the obvious.
So glad you enjoyed the show, and I'd love to see you react to the rest! While they definitely made some changes to accommodate the format and limited number of episodes, I think they did a great job keeping to the overall spirit of the series and not shying away too much from the sillier, more fantastical elements of the world. Trying to make it super serious and realistic just wouldn't have worked for One Piece!
It would be like trying to put Pokémon in the real world. Or Dragon Ball Z, oh wait, they tried that and it failed. Further proving the point

I have never seen the Anime or read the Manga, but I really enjoyed the live action version of One Piece!
I've been watching the animated series on Japanese TV since it began over 20 years ago, and it's one of my favourites. Eiichiro Oda has crafted an amazing saga, and the new live action adaptation seems to capture its spirit and the essence of its characters just right. It's been a joy to see so many people start to experience the wonder and goofiness of the "One Piece" world, and I was glad to see how much you appreciate it, V!
Your analysis of Luffy's character is interesting. I think that in some ways, he exhibits traits of the "serendipitous fool" archetype, a person who is simple-minded or simple-hearted (or both), and yet someone for whom things just seem to fall into place. There's no guarantee he'll be so lucky all the time, but his incredible optimism is indeed one of his most endearing traits.
In case no one has told you yet, all the "land lines" in this world are in fact living snails. They're known as "transponder snails", a species of mollusks in various varieties which all possess telepathic abilities. In universe, people tame and train them so that they can function like our modern phones, and other communication devices. Their appearance is kinda jarring, but I'm glad they've been kept in this adaptation. They really help to sell the fact that this story takes place in a world very different from ours.
As for Luffy eating the yucky Devil Fruit, I suspect that was partly because he was really hungry. As everyone said, he grew up as a street urchin, so he had to fend for himself a lot. I imagine that left him an empty stomach more often than not. His naturally huge appetite probably didn't help matters.

Luffy's someone who follows his instincts and bypasses logic. Though his instincts seem really good and they guide him well but he also seems to have the most ridiculously good luck you'll probably ever see.

“Monkey” is Luffy’s family name, they say the names backwards in this series. Likely because that’s how Japan address their names.

Short answer: no, all anime live action adaptations are not like this. They're almost universally terrible. People were expecting this to be another terrible adaptation, but it surprised everyone. It's actually wonderful.
His name is Luffy. In Japan they introduce themselves using their surname first.

Just a note on names in One Piece; they use the Japanese convention of the family name first, given name second... Monkey is Luffy's family name. Zoro's family name is Roanoa, etc.
The fact you can look at Alvida and ask if that's robin is a dire revelation about todays TV shows.
One Piece is my favorite anime and i was not disappointed with the live action. They did a great job. I liked it so much i started rewatching the anime from the beginning. I know it's crazy but it's fun.

As a big fan of One Piece, when I first saw the show it looks like the mix of LoTR, PoTC, and a little bit of Star Wars. Love the reaction btw.
Luffy is not invincible or immortal. He is immune to blunt attacks because his body has the properties of rubber. He can still be injured by things like sharp objects for example.
I would recommend this series for anyone who wants to see if One Piece is for them, because yeah One Piece is a big commitment but at the same time the series is not gonna get shorter anytime soon. The live action squishes down about 45 episodes/90 chapters worth of content of the first saga, the East Blue Saga.
Alvida is not Robin, she is a bit later than this as you assumed, but with Devil Fruits their strength is sapped by being mostly submerged in water, it doesn't switch off their powers it just makes them weaker and more tired and being tired while sinking is very bad.
Not every power however will be a Devil Fruit, sometimes people just have unique skills. Buggy has a devil fruit and so does Luffy, but Shanks does not - mainly since in the anime/manga he grabs Luffy while swimming in water, not in a boat.
Can we get a Matt Owens SBS like in the manga, where people can ask the creators questions. I want to ask Matt what Buggy calls those chemical sleeper bombs that he uses with the red smoke 😂

My daughter loved One Piece when she was growing up. Hard a bunch of the Manga books, and we watched "some" of the Anime. That was a LONG time ago....and I confess I remember little of it. That being said...this was a WONDERFUL adaptation. I haven't enjoyed an ensemble cast this much since Firefly. It's a fun ride.

From my experience, most people miss this...
Luffy heard that it was the most valuable treasure in Shanks' possession (We see this). Luffy had just been discarded by Shanks and wanted some sort of payback. Luffy is a hungry boy.
Luffy eats fruit because it is valuable to Shanks, because he was mad at Shanks, and because he is just hungry...
Does taste *really* matter at that point, if one is stubborn enough?
I'm so glad you started this Vicky! Protip for this show.. The story will tell you when someone has eaten a devil fruit and if it doesn't that usually means training.
I admit. When I first heard Netflix was doing a live action One Piece, I was hesitant to get into it because I was worried I would get too attached and they would Cowboy Bebop it, or worse turn it into a flaming pile of Dragon Ball Evolution. I was so happy when I learned that they renewed it for a second season almost right away that I binged through the entire first season in one sitting. What makes it more awesome is the guy behind the anime and manga is a coproducer for this show. Team Straw Hats all the way!

For the record, were this a historical film based around masted ships, it would actually be pretty accurate to have a sailor not knowing how to swim. From my understanding of history, the large majority of sailors did not know how to swim. Especially, at a time when many sailors were impressed into being such, rather than voluntarily.

This isn't the first Live Action anime adaptation you've watched VKunia, Battle Angel Alita was the first. In Japan it's family name first, given name last. Monkey is his last name, Luffy is his first name the same goes for all characters in the series except for those that don't have family names or are hiding them. Berri is the name of the currency in this world.
In Japanese it is normal for the last name to be said first and then the first name. So Monkey D. Luffy is last name middle name or letter then first name ^^ I think it's really nice to see that people who have no or almost no experience with the manga or anime like this series so much 😊

I'm just going to say that I'm obsessed with this show. It became my favourite show. I love it so so sooo much (ㅠ_ㅠ)
I will point out Luffys reason for eating the fruit kind of makes sense. He overheard that it was the most valuable thing Shanks had, so by his child logic if he ate it then he would become as valuable to Shanks. I mean he already stabbed his face trying to prove how tough he was. Him eating the fruit for that reason doesn't seem surprising.
yeah LOTS of episodes crammed into 8 so alot of it may or may not seem forced but they needed to cut stuff out lol. I think they did it very well to entice/ease more people into it.
