    I think it would be cool if You guys (Jarrod and Troy) could release or let us know the system requirements of your hydronic heating (spelling?). For example I believe it requires a webesto or some kind of diesel heater, right? Another idea is to lock away the DIY build behind a paywall and then only send paper instructions or write a DIY ebook to sell explaining the details so we can at least get a ballpark idea, and lets be honest, a lot of people would buy the book and probably not even read it fully or decide it "looks too hard", only a true DIY person would attempt something like this anyways. Just some thoughts, enjoy. Again I think if people understood the system requirements or had a ballpark number, you would save yourself a lot of time and hassle, with people emailing you, etc.

Yes it's expensive, but for example if you drive a Honda it gets the job done that you need with 4 wheels, engine, etc. So why do people go out and buy cars like Mercedes and Audi? Yes it's definitely a luxury item but living in a van for 2 years without I felt it's one of the best buys I could of done. Cold months (depending on area) can be tough on someone and waking up with a near frozen floor is not fun at all. I read someone suggested a rug which is fine but I felt this was worth the money. @@JarrodTocci Hey Jarrod! Can you do a video on modular design vs more permanent installations like this here? In other words the risks and benefits of turning your van into a small castle while it is still a relatively small vehicle that can be crashed or stolen? If let' say on the opposite extreme, you have a small Mr. Buddy heater and your van is crashed into, you can just pick it up and throw it into another vehicle. This complex system in this video, however, is a big investment that is more permanently tied to that particular vehicle. In your case, where you do urban stealth, it's an even higher risk because of the craziness of the city traffic. A school bus parked in BLM most of the time wouldn't be so much of a worry because it's sturdy and away from other traffic. Yes that's a over the wheel well tank, it's 22 gallons and bought from Northwest conversions. About the floor height you could go with a thinner insulation but they recommend using what I did or a little smaller. In reality you're only raising the floor 2" or 1.5"

    Recirculating showers are being done elsewhere as well - showerloop.org - and we really need it in every house in the world. The billions of gallons of nearly drinking quality water we just flush out of our houses on an on-going basis is incredibly wasteful. Same thing with toilets, composting or incinerating units in every house would save countless gallons of fresh water use that's completely unnecessary. And many areas of the world are already feeling the pinch with water, in some areas it's already disaster time. Replacing our showers and toilets with water use friendly options would help a lot in curbing water waste.

      This system also radiates heat into the air, therefore the floor is actually heating your whole van. So if you have more fluid in the piping in the floor then more gets heated and can heat your van easier. If you have truck space, like under a bed off the back doors, then you definitely want that heated because if you're somewhere cold then you don't want anything in that space to freeze like power system or water tanks, etc.

    Hey Jarrod - Stewing on the idea of recirculating hot water from a Bosch water heater through a short run of pex lines under the floor in the galley kitchen area - do you think that would be effective at all in providing some warmth to vinyl flooring if you were up skiing in the mountains? My planned build is for a weekender (battery drain not a worry) so this would be simply a comfort addition to knock the cold edge of the floor in addition to a Espar/Webasto fuel heater. Jarrod Tocci Okay that makes sense if you are getting hot water then. I just bought a new van 6 months ago and converted it (still a work in progress) but I didn’t do a shower in it. So I forget if you have a shower the need for hot water. I always shower at the gym in the morning so I forget about the need for hot water in the van. I’m excited for more videos and when you travel to Boston let me know if you wanna do a Van life meetup in Chicago. I would love to meet some other people and see some other vans when your passing thru. Maybe you can see some new stuff.

    Jarrod can you give me an update on how the hydronic floor heat has been working since you've been running it for a few months now? Any issues?

    • @JarrodTocci
      @JarrodTocci  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you asked! Zero issues!! It's on a thermostat and will kick on when needed. Taken it into 12° temps and now in socal where it's warm during the day but it seems that mostly everyone hangs in my van at night. I sleep comfortably every night and it truly feels amazing when I get up knowing that I don't need socks or slippers on to walk around in the morning

    They need to add heating from the van engine, its just another heat exchanger.
    If this system is expensive then why not buy an Aqua Hot?
    They do Deisel, Electric and Engine Hydronic Heat + hot water and its all in a single box.
    You can buy thy Hydronic COnvectors and radiant flooring from anywhere.
    Looks like he must be using smaller 3/8th tubing in the floors? or maybe 1/2 in?

    Jarrod - first of all I appreciate what you do and have been watching for years! I am finally building my own van and would like this system or one similar. Is there any word yet on DIY kits or a list of upfitters? I have already tried to get ahold of VLT directly but unfortunately no response :( are they still in business? I wouldn't be so overly eager about heat and water but as we all know it has to be done first before proceeding with anything else... cheers! hope to hear back from someone (Jarrod or Troy) about all this soon!

      @@ImDBatty1 all you need to do is run the recirc water from the drain through an inline filter and UV light to kill the bacteria, and straight back through the shower head. That's essentially it conceptually. I would run mine by using a separate tank for showers, 3-4 gallons, complimented by my main larger tank. Wire a small 12v pump to fill the shower tank from the main tank prior to use, then switch the water heater to draw from the recirc/shower tank. Add a simple flush system to dump the shower tank after every shower or ever few if you'd like, Then switch back to main tank water for sink water. Keep the 2 systems separate with the exception of the pump, and the shower tank is wired to flush and fill from the flick of a switch.

      Thank you. Reason for the proprietary is so no one knocks off the design of certain aspects. The system itself is nothing new as a few have done things sorta like this. Out of respect to Van Life Tech they spent a lot of money and 2 years developing this system to be as perfect as possible so that's why the exclusiveness. Just like most companies they protect their products as well

We have an outlet in Canada and we are currently in talks with UK and Australian up-fitters. Our business plan is purposefully B2B - a single trained Affiliate can install 10-100+ Systems per year while providing info, pricing and service wheras supporting DIY completely throttles my limited bandwidth. Still, I’m a hacker and DIY’er at heart - despite being ‘stupid’ from a business standpoint, I fully support self sufficiency and the DIY movement. 20% of this weeks kits are DIY.
