Colombo, Sri Lanka Was Far Better Than Expected 🇱🇰

- We jumped on the classic Sri Lankan bus and headed to a local market here in Colombo. Here we tried our first Sri Lankan king coconut which was top tier.
Then we began our Sri Lankan durian hunt, we jumped on another local bus then walked around for aaages to no avail.
Eventually we asked a friendly tuk tuk driver to drive us around but after running the meter up for a good while we gave up.
We ended up taking our new driver mate for some Sri Lankan rice & curry lunch before saying goodbye and sadly heading to the supermarket to procure our Sri Lankan durian...
Now I wasn't expecting much but the durian was alright, I've gotta be honest it was quite mild and not up there with the greatest but for just over £1 you can't complain.
We went for another wander around our local area in Colombo and soaked in the street life at sunset before stumbling across an epic Sri Lankan hopper spot run by a couple of lovely ladies. We ordered some plain hoppers and coconut milk hoppers, all were absolutely fantastic.
When we returned home our hosts had cooked us some traditional Sinhalese food which we all shared together. You just can't beat home cooked food and this was no exception. Phenomenal.

Until I saw this video I was under the impression that it was a run down country with broken infrastructure and poverty like some African countries especially after reading the news in recent years of violence and civil unrest due to fuel crisis but your video has just changed my perception😊. Now so far it's been absolutely wonderful. We also had low expectations because of seeing other youtubers aswell making silly videos with silly titles.
Reality is the infrastructure is actually very good, everybody is super respectful and educated, the nature is so beautiful, the food is one of our favourites. We don't have a bad thing to say really!

Wow I never thought that most people think about my country that way, actually Sri Lanka is different than Africa even Mainland South Asia, It's Island, Not only the city of Colombo, our infrastructure is well connected throughout the island.. that's why Colombo not very crowded city as other capital cities..I know country still have problems but you can live happily coz Sri Lanka is safe, tourist friendly and affordable 😊

last year there was political unrest in colombo..people ransacked presidential palace..president rajapaksa fled from d country, there was massive protest against d govt...now life is back on d tracks.

Awesome video! buses were colorful, hoppers were great like Kerala hoppers..Leish was very kind to buy the palm jaggery from the old lady who is alone and poor, and loved the ingenious lemonade recipe! The tuktuk driver was very kind to drive you around plus give a discount! Great people make a great vacation.

People burn coconut husks outside their homes to clear the trapped chemicals in the air .it refreshes your thoughts, lightens the mind, makes space for good things in your life and helps you focus and reclaim peace .
Durian season is from May to August. You can manily find them in the South.Durian was brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese in the 16th century. .
Teach us something new every day don't you. We read that but then everyone in person was telling us the season just ended, maybe nobody has a clue aha.
@EllisWR it's definitely the beginning of season which is why you only found small ones as they start to appear in April .. the best ones in July/August when fully ripe and full of flavour

The pure kithul jaggery is around 900 LKR or more , the old lady said that it was not pure and it was an ok quality Jaggery

Genuine kithul jaggery breaks easily and melts quickly. It has a distinct taste too, slightly sour. If the jaggery is hard, it’s very likely sugar cane or simply caramelized sugar.

I remember suggesting you guys do visit Srilanka but whats unbelievable is that you guys ended up staying in wellawatta in Colombo. I grew up in that area. There’s a few excellent food places in that area. You should try a place called sagara foods. It must be very close to where guys staying. It’s a takeaway spot. But amazing food. Btw great video guys. Looking forward to the next one.❤

In sinhala "tambili" means orange so we call king coconut simply orange. But we call oranges "dodam"

We call orange Narang. Dodam is not really a commonly used word for oranges. Dodam is actually a Tamil word and people that use it often have tamil origin. Interesting side fact.

Durian is a real favorite of ours. Love them in Langsuan, Chumphorn. Great video but the heat looks like a real killer there.

You can find good Duriyan from central part of Sri Lanka. Mainly in Kithulgala. But the Duriyan season is now over. May be there are some in those areas.

Wow you guys so close to my home in Kirulapana 😊. Nugegoda is the next closest town which has Market and its 5 minutes walk from Kirulapana market. Try out Mount Lavinia Beach and Dehiwala Zoo. Mr.Kottu Grand - Nugegoda try out for Kottu and there a lot of palace you can eat out explore. Visit some famous shopping malls like CCC - Colombo city center , Havelock city Mall, One Galle face for an experience and visit Galle face green and try out some street food at the evening 🎉

It's the onset of the fruit season..by May you will see tons of tasty mango selling cheap.. lots of other fruits too.. usually End April , May,June is fruit season. Thats why April May are super hot months..it allows fruits to ripe..nature's way

Some of our favourite foods no doubt
Kitul one melts if kept outside. A piece of kitul jaggary the size of the one you bought costs around 800-1200 rupees if you bought it directly from a producer in the hill country of Sri Lanka. It will be more expensive in other places, like Colombo, etc. 100% Kithul Jaggary or 100% Kithul Tricle are expensive delicacies, and it is very hard to find 100% pure Kithul Tricle or Jaggary.
btw, people mix a little bit of sugar with Kithul Jaggary to prevent metling if kept outside, those once only with little bit of sugar also very expensive.
In most cases, you will find less than 30% kitul mix with coconut tricle or sugar. Otherwise, people can't afford it. Even a touch of real kitul will make things more expensive.

Finally you got one even not very fresh Durian (should you go back to Thailand or Malaysia for good Durian? Why not) ... Dont mix hakuru with water. Just break it in to small pieces and drink with tea.
Coconut shells are burnt and we put a powdered resin called kattakumanjal on the charred shells to fumigate the houses and premises. It cleanses the air and leaves a pleasant, earthy smell
