no worries, i've seen multiple people claim you can't focus, enough to the point where i had to replay 4 and check just now and realised it might be might be my favourite touhou game, it also introduced death bombing and grazing, along with the basic dream mechanic. it's my pc98 recommendation tbh as it's not that hard either with basic attacks which after a couple of playthroughs arn't to hard to dodge (i'm looking at 5 with it's curvy homing lazers).

I'm really on team "start with Touhou 6", not in spite of but because of the hitbox. The thing that will make you go from a bullet hell noob to a competent player is the ability to almost never look at your ship, and focus instead on the pattern that you will have to dodge. A visible hitbox will have tendency to attract the eye of the less experienced player, leaving him not be able to anticipate the bullets that are coming to get him. Yes, too some extent it is going to be a bit harder, but if your intent is to get deeper in the genre, starting with a game that forces you to learn good habits is very valuable.
From EOSD obviously. 1. You met main most popular and most important characters. 2. You get one complete story that essential for lore. 3. You met main problems you will face by playing touhou on modern PC, so you would inevitable find out how to operate with patches. 4. There is retexture patch for EOSD, so, it would look better then touhou 7-10 (that didn't have so high quality patch) 5. It has all necessary touhou mechanics without overcomplicating stuff 6. It has Cirno(with dialogue that represent her nature), so, you as a newbie would be happy (and educated enough). And if you are happy you would have more motivation to go forward on touhou series. 7. You will understand nearly 60% of the memes after eosd. 8. You will miss the joy for playing Sakuya in Touhou 7 if you skip eosd. (it's endings will lose some sense either) 9. Touhou 8 also closely connected to eosd 10. It has Flandre (and you as a newbie absolutely want to know, see and play with her, because you already saw her for quadrillion times).

Absolutely agreed on Perfect Cherry Blossom. It doesn't overcomplicate things and instead has a mechanic that actively encourages you to try your best to just dodge instead of using a safety bomb just to at least not use a life for a short duration. And it's just an overall incredibly fun and memorable game, right down to the difficulty spikes (the sisters with Sakuya are a rude awakening).
I really like your rankings to be honest. I put 6 and 14 in the equivalent positions you put 7 and 10. But I think your placements are probably better. Hard agree on the placements and reasons for both 11 and 12 being in psycho tier.
I did my first CC on 10 and it was a blast because of the music, then I went for 11, it was a blast, but I suffered and died 1 time to Okuu and went directly to 18 lmao

That’s a good point, as long as you come in with the right mindset, you get to do one of the most fun things in touhou as a beginner, which is puzzle solving. You come out with a lot of experience too, so playing pointdevice early in ur touhou journey is totally viable. (Only problem is getting stuck in hell cause you used too many bombs early so uhhhhh just don’t do that lol)

you can start to get into touhou with 8 because lives and slowmode or you can go commando and start with lolk (the best shmup game ever). i would say that the best game for beginners are definitely 16 or 8 on easy and then you step up your game by playing normal

Second touhou I played was Touhou 11 Subterranean Animism, I 1cc'ed it on normal on MarisaA (my favourite shottype) and ReimuA. It's one of my most favourite touhou games. Also I swear I'm not a psycho. (I also play on doing 1cc as ReimuC on normal and hard on other shottypes)

My first Touhou game was 12 and it was a very exciting experience! I didn't beat the game back then, but I certainly had a good time with it. I moved on to 10 after trying for a while and that was the first game in the series that I beat. 10 is still the earliest game in the series that I've played, I'm just not into the characters from 6-9, and 16 was the last game I played. Definitely need to try 17-19 someday.
I recently got into touhou, i actually got into it whem i first played fangame Luna Nights which was hells good and got me hooked into the fandom and game even more. I like the characters amd everything. So i downloaded touhou 1 to 5 and just completed touhou 1 a day or two ago. Ill try to play in a chronological order. Im currently playing touhou-2. Seriously the game's hard but also easy. I generally like bullet hell games. :) touhou is great from all perspectives.

Fun fact: PCB Easy so little of a step down compared to Normal that I had to watch a video to point out the meaningful differences. First off, obviously the bullets are slower even at the same rank and the attacks are more dense. But, here's the actual differences: 1. Letty's non1 has green rice in lanes instead of uneven portions 2. The fairies in Stage 2 that shoots bullets in Y shape shoot instead in V... away from you. 3. Chen non1's wave 3 (the first yellow wave) is a SINGULAR bullet. Idk why lol but it's funny 4. Alice's Dutch dolls are even more free because they fire in + shape instead of like *. 5. The lane fairies in Stage 4 don't shoot backwards 6. Merlin's nons are still war crimes. 7. The fairies that shoot redarrowheads on Stage 5 shoot away from you on Easy 8. Youmu's Animal Realm (the one spell that gets completely changed on H/L) doesn't have the stray singular bullets on Easy. That's about it, shit like Human or Hell Sword are still surprisingly complex and Youmu will end up bullying whoever picked Easy. 9. Spam on Stage 6 is surprisingly readable on Easy. 10. Amount of bubbles in Yuyuko non2 and non3 are reduced; this is important because in non2 they no longer span the entire width and in non3 they stop overlapping much faster. Non3 knives are nasty as ever, though. 11. The bullets don't alternate lanes on Easy version of Butterfly spell. 12. Final Yuyuko non doesn't have the rings on Easy. 13. Hirokawa has less layers. Funny how almost half of the changes are on Stage 6 lol.

In terms of building habits and stuff 2 and 15 are actually good and 8 is the worst. In 2 you dont have a lot of quality of life features making you have to play without them resulting in being a better player. 15 is only good to start if on pointdevice cuz noobs cant bomb anyways. 8 is by far the worst for this because your deathbomb timer is so gigantic you will rely on it too much and never learn actual bombing skill But the best game is still 4 cuz its the easiest one

yeah i quite like it, but still probably wouldn't recommend it to newcomers due to the lack of recourses, PCB is really good for beginners however.
I started with 1, and I'm happy I did. 1 and 2 will teach you patience in a unique way.
LoLK Pointdevice mode is great for beginners tbh, it really forces them to learn from patterns and look for easy solutions.

0:44 Well, actually, the reason I played these games was because of the characters and lore. I suck at bullet hell, and it's not my cup of tea either. That's why I'm just using the cheat, so I can see all the characters' conversations from those games.
I naturally wanted to start with the game my favourite charactor was in, Rin, so I started with SA. Took a while to beat it in easy, and it took forever to beat it in normal. Second game after that was lotus land story, very surprised at how much easier it was. Beat lunatic mode, felt easier than SA normal. That was 7 years ago

In terms of building habits and stuff 2 and 15 are actually good and 8 is the worst.
In 2 you dont have a lot of quality of life features making you have to play without them resulting in being a better player.
15 is only good to start if on pointdevice cuz noobs cant bomb anyways.
8 is by far the worst for this because your deathbomb timer is so gigantic you will rely on it too much and never learn actual bombing skill
But the best game is still 4 cuz its the easiest one
