    A tip that def helped me was upping the difficulty when stuck.
    Once you've learned the game you're playing enough that you remember the stages and can reliably make it to level 5 or 6 but still can't seem to make it over the hump; play on hard difficulty for about 5 times in a row, using all continues, and just try to make it past stage 4 or 5 and then switch it back to normal and you'll feel like a demigod.
    It's legit exactly like training in high gravity like he says in the video.

    This kind of ties in with your "stop moving" tip, but what really got me past the "competent but not confident" phase was getting more comfortable with bullets getting close to me. Even with the "stop moving" tip, I was only taking the WIDEST gaps I could find, which isn't sustainable in the long run. Letting bullets graze and get in my "personal bubble" really helped fine-tune my spacial awareness. Positioning your character without looking is already a skill that needs to be honed, but positioning your tiny hitbox is the real goal.

    A tip from me! A tip about bombs:
    Instead of spamming them or not using them at all as he said in this video, bomb when you are about to get hit.
    Or if you can learn it, do a death bomb. This is what will help you win and save precious lives.
    Yeah.... Thats it.

    • @ajpiskel
      @ajpiskel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      I agree. This video was a very good basic primer, but I feel like a little lip service could have been given to deathbombing, even if it wasn't called out specifically by name. Some games in the series even give you a little bit of time when you're hit to bomb before it actually counts as a death.
      I guess it's a little between bombing all the time or not at all. Don't bomb because a pattern looks tough, bomb only when you think you're about to get hit. This will improve your ability to be able to tell when you're actually in danger or not. But again, that's advice #0 & #6. Practice.

    Most important thing about bullet hell games is to memorize enemy spawns and bullet patterns and then figuring out how to move to lessen the threat as much as possible. Flawless execution is the next step. I see so many people skipping the first step and wondering why the game is so difficult. Mostly, it's not, they're just approaching it in a way that makes it unnecessary hard.

      I never heard any of these but I can kinda imagine some of them. I assume deathbombing is using a bomb exactly as you get hit in order to avoid death (I know because I played the first 5 Touhou after playing 8 and they don't have that mechanic). Shotgun is probably getting closer to a boss so all your bullets hit them instead of just a few. Bottom and wallhugging just sound like sticking to the wall or floor in order to only have to worry about 2 directions instead of 4 (which doesn't really sounds too useful considering it's better to have more place to move)

    The good part is that "practice" pretty much involves all the other lessons. The first time I played (Touhou 7, to be precise) I thouht it was impossible. I legit, thought it was one of those games meant to troll people and make fun of them for losing like I Wanna be the Guy and stuff like that. Then I got used to it, and after losing like a hundred times to win on easy, normal wasn't that different, and then neither was hard or lunatic.
    After that, I tried to complete every Touhou game (on normal) and by the time I completed 3 of them, I was already using ALL of these lessons. You just kinda realize them on your own.
    I'd like to add a few advices of my own.
    -Only use your bombs whenever you're sure you're going to die, even if you could have survived. If you use them just to clear the screen, the boss is kicking your ass, so only use them when you're about to get hit or have no idea how to dodge something (though you'll have to learn to dodge that particular pattern eventually if you ever want to play the game again)
    -Anything that clears the screen clean, like getting to max power after you die or that border thing from Touhou 7 (no idea if it's on another Touhou after 8), leave those stuff for the very last second. Like, if you died, wait until there's a lot of bullets on screen so picking the full power will clear them out immediately. Same with the border thing, wait until it's almost gone to clear any bullet that could have hit you after the border is gone

    I think the most important tip I have is that...if it's your first Touhou game or first bullet hell period...it's ok to play on easy. No one is master day one, and no newbie can 1CC on lunatic day one. I Especially recommend this if its a harder game and doesn't "punish" you for picking easy (like EOSD or MOF). It's also ok to not do a 1CC run on first try. Your first game clear doesn't have to be a 1CC., and you can use as much continues as you'd like in your first game clear. I would also recommend playing the first few runs trying to get as far as you can, and when you have 1-4 stages practice the stages that are harder to you and learn every stage inside out before seriously trying a 1CC run.

    @T33K3SS3LCH3N 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Some more rules of thumb that helped me:
    1. Targeted attacks are so easy to dodge that you can generally put your attention elsewhere. Youmu's red rays in Touhou 7 for example can be dodged just by the audio cue while you can focus on the ice coming from below.
    2. When an attack pincers you from left and right but with low horizontal speed, moving to one of those sides means that the other can't hit you while you're in motion.
    3. Many projectiles have far smaller hitboxes than models. You can use the graze sound cue to get experience with how big they actually are.
    4. Many pincer attacks that move in diagonal patterns have temporary blind spots where you can stay save for seconds at a time.

    One obvious tip that I wish I'd gotten and not noticed through watching people play Lunatic is to "Divide and Conquer". When there are attacks coming from multiple directions it's so much easier to get to a safe location from one then the other than to try to dodge both at the same time.

    The angry videogame nerd once pointed out about a Silver Surfer game how nearly every part of the screen is a dead zone. He drew lines through the bullet paths to show which parts of the screen you effectively can't cross. I like to draw those lines in Touhou in my mind to help me project the bullet paths. Of course, these aren't hard lines and you can usually still weave through them. Eventually, you probably MUST weave through them. But as long as I don't have to, I stay out of harm's way and pick the largest gaps I can find.

    - static (bullets that are not influenced by the player, think of it as a bullet that only shoot's directy down and nothing else)
    - random (bullet's go brrrrr)
    once you know the three main types you can easily break down on what to do most of the time.

    Yeah, a lot of techniques used in bullet hells can be contradicting to eachother, as those aren't rules. The no.1 technique is when to use more specific techniques. When to micro or macro dodge, when to be aggressive and move a lot quickly and when to take it easy and move almost nothing. Some spells might even require you to switch tactics, like Kanako's "Miwatari the God Walked". Bullet Hells are all about quick thinking honestly

    Here’s one I figured out myself(also said this on AspreyFM’s Touhou game introduction video):
    You know how you can only see your actual hitbox on Focus? Well, in Unfocus, while not as accurate or visible, there still usually is a visual indicator for the center of the sprite.
    This goes into the design of the playable characters themselves; most Touhou characters wear dresses or skirts with a bow-tie to hold them up, that isn’t the same color as their dresses. If not, there’s usually something else that highlights their waist. You can use this as a substitute hitbox for when you need to use your spread shot or move faster.

    Not darting around so much, memorizing patterns and adapting to them, and not being afraid to graze bullets have done wonders in improving my play. Practice is obviously important, as well.

    as an old touhou player i can agree with this tips, yet the "bomb a lot or not at all" i have to say, do not bomb but to train your reflexes, bombing a lot will delete the bullets, making you feel "safe" at places where its not even needed and hardens the process of getting better reflexes, yet if you dont bomb until you get hit to bomb kill.... then you will find yourself in 2 positions, saving you limited life stock, and practicing a lot more, and an extra third, you dont get distracted with the mili seconds of thinking on "should i bomb this mass of bullets?" believe it or not, i have died more from thinking on that rather than just waiting for the bullet to kill me to press the button

    Bombs are the best tip imo… just… bomb.
    Bombs are the answer bombs are LIFE.(almost literally so)
    When you panic and forget your strategies, -BOMB
    When you get scared or something looks intimidating, -BOMB
    When you’re about to get hit but you just click X in that millisecond, -DEATHBOMB (the best kind of bomb when you hear the death sound but you survived because bomb 👍)
    For me i just consider bombs extra lives since they save you from dying, that makes it easier for me to 1cc with that mindset

  • @atk1152
    @atk1152 ปีที่แล้ว

    the Tip on bomb is using it for learn boss or stage phase since you ain't gonna learn nothing if you just die at the start so use bomb remove your mistake while learning enemy spell card, then if you confident enough you can't go without bomb

  • @Flowery0
    @Flowery0 ปีที่แล้ว

    4:09 my answer is: learn what and when to bomb. As you said, bomb is almost like a life. The only real differences are that it's harder to use and easier to get(relevant almost everywhere where the bomb-like mechanic exists). In touhou if you gat gud at using bombs you have>3x hp(3x is from defensive properties, > is from all that damage) compared to someone who doesn't use bombs at all
    However, the damage is a double edged sword, because it also forces you to stop learning the situation you're in and how to deal with it without bombs(bullet spam from the fairies, that 1 attack the boss upgrades and uses every other turn)

    A very good way to practice, could be playing impossible spell card, there you go with trial and error in each scene with seeing when to use the items, when you can actually dodge, and so on, with practice, all 6 lessons become apparent, it took me a time to get used to some of the games, while i started less than a month ago, i already got to clear(not on 1cc yet tho) EoSD, IN, DDC and HSiFS, it all comes to keep a calm mind and not to panic, since most of times one can save up a bomb for when needed, figure out the pattern quick enough and as such, the best way is to try to spend the less amount of resources during stages 1-3 most of times, so after one has a bigger amount of bomb and lives(for even more bombs if you happen to die)

    • @GoldenBattler
      @GoldenBattler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Touhou 8, Imperishable Night. You play as a team of 2 characters in that game, with the human as your unfocused (fast) shot, and the youkai as your focused (slow) shot. The meter goes from -100% to 100% depending on which form you're in, although the effects of THAT are pretty minor. Aside from that, the human form can kill the familiars enemies spawn, where-as the youkai form is impervious to them.

    • @minorukoyama2944
      @minorukoyama2944 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So youkai hits hard and human hits fast. But the meter going from -100% to 100% makes no difference?

    • @GoldenBattler
      @GoldenBattler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eh, it's a little complicated for me to summarize, but you get more time orbs if it's near the max on either side, and you need time orbs to get the Good Ending.
      You can check the wiki for a more detailed explanation if you're curious. Just keep in mind when it mentions "slowing time" it's talking about your progress to the Good Ending, not like, actually slowing the game down. en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Imperishable_Night/Gameplay#Youkai_Gauge
