I'm 67 and I grew up in the 60's when this song had so much meaning.Truely if you lived during the time of this song it hits really hard knowing what time has passed away from life of living

Dean Ford re-recorded this song and there is a video with him using this version and as an old man and you can see how the meaning of the song changes over the years. He was an excellent singer and his last album done in his 70''s was wonderful. Unfortunately, we lost him a couple of years back, but this is a great song to leave behind for the rest of us.

Very interesting. I know I was always surprised that a band that could do a song as great at this was a one hit wonder. Nice to know that they actually had more hits. I'm guessing the lack of distribution of their later stuff in the US probably had more to do with failures on the business side of things (management, promoters and record companies) than the band itself. Just my guess anyway.

I remember how happy my dad was when he discovered he could pull up TH-cam on the living room TV and watch videos on the big screen. He and I listened to this song every night for at least a month before he died. This and Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints" were two of his all time favorite songs. I played them both the night (early morning) he died.... December 31, 2018.... the day I became an orphan. Miss you dad, still love the song.

Thank you for doing this one and to all who suggested it. It got to me even when I was nine when it first came out here in the US. One of those songs that becomes part of you. There was something about the happiness of the reflections and then the sadness. Like We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and Fortunate Son, it became an anthem for many in in the military in Viet Nam. They were very much still there at the time. Definitely check out the solo performance Dean Ford did not long before he died. It is on youtube and very powerful.

The Marmalade's only number 1 song was Ob La De, Ob La Da. The Beatles put it on their White Album in 1968 but didn't release it as a single because both Lennon and McCartney didn't rate it as a single. (At least, not until years later) The Beatles and The Marmalade were recording or something in the same venue and got talking and somehow Marmalade received the OK to release it as a single. It immediately shot to number ONE in the UK and became the only number one of Marmalade.
I was in Bahamas in 1970 talking to 3 young Americans who were just about to go to Vietnam and this song came on, they were tearful didn’t want to go, every time I hear it feel so sad. I was on ship as a young engineer from England.

Me either. It's one of many I had forgotten about. Unfortunately you hear so many songs in your lifetime, it is hard to remember all of them. I find it to be one of the best things about watching reaction channels, they are great reminders of songs you don't remember. EDIT: I commented before I watched the video and I was able to sing along. It's funny how you can forget a song but remember all the lyrics.
Dean Ford has always amazed me with his fantastic vocals. Another song I hope you play by them is "Loving Things". Marmalade even did a great cover of "Hey Joe", among many other very good songs. And, later on, Their guitarist Junior Campbell sang a superb song called "Hallelujah Freedom"
Dean Ford was a recovering alcoholic and ended up driving a limousine in LA. Some of the people he drove included Michael Jackson and Madonna. He never told them who he was. Although he lost everything to his alcoholism, he did save his life and became a good man. R.I.P. Mr. Ford.

A great band from the 60's you should react to next is The Union Gap. Their biggest hit was "Young Girl". Lead singer Gary Puckett has a Gorgeous voice.

I was born years after this song was released so that makes sense. But I know the song from my parents' records and I always thought it was such a beautiful song. This song was the first I '"heard" the bass guitar. The way it broke out of the acoustic intro with the drums filled my young impressionable mind with wonder at what instrument was making that sound...even though it is a "sad" song it always made me feel good to hear it.
This is one of these songs that become more powerful and meaningful as you age, and you reflect back on the different stages in your life. I'll turn 60 next June, 2025, and I simply, cannot handle this fact, at all. My body may be pushing 60 but my heart and mind is forever, 18 / 20 odd, on the inside. This is a really, powerful song to listen to as you age, big time.

There are other countries other than the USA and as many have pointed out they were not one hit wonders in the UK and had a number one with Oh Bla Di - Cousin Norman was a big hit too which also has great harmonies

Dean Ford, The lead singer passed away on New Years Eve 2018 and i heard this as a tribute to him on the radio and was just filled up with emotion, A beautiful song that was i think was released right at the end of 1969, Back in those days songs stayed in the charts here in the UK (Top 20) for weeks, Unlike today. The Marmalade's only number 1 song was Ob La De, Ob La Da. The Beatles put it on their White Album in 1968 but didn't release it as a single because both Lennon and McCartney didn't rate it as a single. (At least, not until years later) The Beatles and The Marmalade were recording or something in the same venue and got talking and somehow Marmalade received the OK to release it as a single. It immediately shot to number ONE in the UK and became the only number one of Marmalade.
I was in Bahamas in 1970 talking to 3 young Americans who were just about to go to Vietnam and this song came on, they were tearful didn’t want to go, every time I hear it feel so sad. I was on ship as a young engineer from England.

Me either. It's one of many I had forgotten about. Unfortunately you hear so many songs in your lifetime, it is hard to remember all of them. I find it to be one of the best things about watching reaction channels, they are great reminders of songs you don't remember.

Dean Ford has always amazed me with his fantastic vocals. Another song I hope you play by them is "Loving Things". Marmalade even did a great cover of "Hey Joe", among many other very good songs. And, later on, Their guitarist Junior Campbell sang a superb song called "Hallelujah Freedom"
Dean Ford was a recovering alcoholic and ended up driving a limousine in LA. Some of the people he drove included Michael Jackson and Madonna. He never told them who he was. Although he lost everything to his alcoholism, he did save his life and became a good man. R.I.P. Mr. Ford.

A beautiful choice of song....there ain't nothing to beat the music from the 60s and 70's. Great lyrics and wonderful melodies, the hallmark of two great decades. The Beatles set the standard, you had to be good to follow their example.

A great band from the 60's you should react to next is The Union Gap. Their biggest hit was "Young Girl". Lead singer Gary Puckett has a Gorgeous voice.

I was born years after this song was released so that makes sense. But I know the song from my parents' records and I always thought it was such a beautiful song. Another band from Scotland is The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. Their two most well known songs are "Arms of Mary" and "(I Don't Want to Love You But) You Got Me Anyway".

This song was the first I '"heard" the bass guitar. The way it broke out of the acoustic intro with the drums filled my young impressionable mind with wonder at what instrument was making that sound...even though it is a "sad" song it always made me feel good to hear it.
This is one of these songs that become more powerful and meaningful as you age, and you reflect back on the different stages in your life. I'll turn 60 next June, 2025, and I simply, cannot handle this fact, at all. My body may be pushing 60 but my heart and mind is forever, 18 / 20 odd, on the inside. This is a really, powerful song to listen to as you age, big time.

Originally called Dean Ford and the Gaylords, Marmalade were formed in Dundee, Scotland as teenagers in 1961 they changed to Marmalade in 1964 and were the first Scottish band to top the UK charts in 1967 with a cover of the Beatles "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"!

When you haven't heard these songs since about the time it first came out and you hear it now. I'm always amazed how great they really were. I don't know why, the voices the instrumental so good. Even compared to today they had so much talent. Damn it's all good.

Very Harmonic , I just love it when strumming Guitars and Horns are added to the mix it's so amazing and beautiful sounding very nostalgic and warm. Dean Ford, The lead singer passed away on New Years Eve 2018 and i heard this as a tribute to him on the radio and was just filled up with emotion, A beautiful song that was i think was released right at the end of 1969, Back in those days songs stayed in the charts here in the UK (Top 20) for weeks, Unlike today. I'm so glad you finally got round to reacting to this song, I recommended this to you probably about 18 months ago, Not sure if you ever saw my actual email but hearing it was just awesome.

Sadly Dean Ford who was the vocalist for the Marinade passed away in recent years. He re-cut this song with Joe Tansin of Badfinger which featured flashbacks from his young years to old age.....very sad.....GREAT PICK...
