Salahudin had an army the size we cannot comprehend fighting in muslim territory for Allah in order to avenge infidel attacks on peaceful muslims.
Baldwin had an army of proven knights fighting under the true cross (supposedly the same cross Jesus was crucified on) in mostly hostile territory looking to save christian men from being murdered by blasphemers.
Had it been real, they all would have died. Every man would have died. Every man in that fight would have thrown themselves into the inferno, because if they had survived they would be treated as traitors and deserters and would meet a much harsher end than they could possibly think.

An Islamic Physician between the 9th and 13th century was like a sorcerer, thanks to the Islamic Golden Age. They had a detailed knowledge of cures for a myriad of diseases and maladies - meanwhile in Europe, religious zealotry actively persecuted anyone attempting to so much as remove a rotten tooth.
So, for Saladin to send his Personal Physicians to help Baldwin - it was a subtle message conveying how deeply he respected Baldwin, in spite of being his enemy. In a world without politics or religious divide, they might have been the best of friends.

@@subliminalfalllenangel2108 The problem is that the leaders are way TOO diplomatic in the current world. Too much bureaucracy on either side leads to delayed intervention in a time of need. Take the UN for example. Countries outside of their sphere are left to fend while the voting passes (which can often go for longer than a month) and prevents any progress. Plus, in a medieval era, very little resources were allocated in the scale it is now. And even then, most of the imported resources were luxury, there was little need for goods not needed for basic survival. An embargo on the country's resources weren't too much of a threat (aside from neighboring countries, take for example the pyrrhic war where the sea was an important point in trade). In the modern world banana republic states that rely on export of maybe 1 or 2 resources as their main source of income, manpower isn't the main weapon, it's the threat of cutting out essential strategic and civilian goods. And often even in a state of diplomatic impasse, both sides won't back down, which leads to more negotiating jargon which, in turn, stagnates the situation until appropriate ammount of votes are passed through several channels (another process that slows down things). The people, hell, the entire state is left on it's own with zero command outside of their own forces, while the leaders babble away at their large gatherings while innocents and soldiers die...
Next time try to sounds less like a pompous prick and read a book for once.

"Withdrawal or we will all die here."
People in the comments are missing the point.
This isn't about Baldwin being a "badass MF" who came here guns blazing and staring down Salahadin.
Baldwin is looking at an army leader who is indeed very good at what he does, but who is extremely furious and emotional over what Reynard has done (attacked a pilgrim caravan and killed his sister).
Baldwin's "Withdrawal or we will all die here" isn't a threat.
It is a reminder that Baldwin is a leader also, and that he will be forced to retaliate against him, should Salahaddin attack the city, thus causing a massive loss of human life. Which is why he gives his word that Reynard shall be punished, through justice and not vengeance.
Baldwin having leprosy doesn't mean he has nothing to lose.

I know it probably wasn't intentional, but the different riding styles of Saladin and Baldwin are neat. Saladins is a bit more hectic, taking sharp turns. Baldwins is controlled, but also a bit stiff. One was trained to fight with horse-archers and light cavalry, the other in heavy cavalry charge attacks. Neat!

I think it also serves to show the contrast between the two’s health, with Saladin, despite being in his 50s, could ride with and maneuver with much spirit, whereas Baldwin, much much younger, takes meaningful, deliberate and careful movements due to his advanced leprosy, and the toll it has taken on his body

It also is a great metaphor for the zeal, determination and vigour both men have not just for their religious beliefs, but their capability to lead at the forefront of two worlds.
Mind you, Europe still warred actively with itself whilst the Muslims were engaging with threats to the East. To bring about ANY military or diplomatic action would require no small amount of charisma.
However, it is clear that the Chrisitians were living on borrowed time as is. Baldwin's death is one of those very apparent moments in history that served as a turning point for the future events.

Baldwin on the other hand probably was riding a Thorobreed horse or some other European breed, much quieter, but bigger and more suited to heavy cavalry action

6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7 and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

@@MorroTreece I think you're conflating historical events with dramatized dialogue and filler. There are many rulers throughout history who were hated by their own people or just simply existed to exist.. there were very few who changed the fabric of their societies for the better, with no other motive than the betterment of their own people (those tend to be the ones who are assassinated by nobility/senate members/council members). This is a story of two of these rare leaders meeting as enemies, but showing the utmost respect for their enemies (both leaders, and soldiers).

The only flaw in the movie is that it portrays Balian as a brave knight for the sake of the movie's fun.
Balian was a skilled diplomat who was fluent in many foreign languages, including Arabic and French, and maintained close relationships with the lords of the Islamic world.
The reason Balian was able to enter Jerusalem in the first place was because he asked Saladin, with whom he was close, to allow him to bring his family out (Balián also participated in the Battle of the Horn of Hattin, where King Gyi was defeated).
Balian was a skilled diplomat and well-versed in the political dynamics of the Middle East.
When the mud wall, the weakest of Jerusalem's walls, collapsed and the city was on the verge of collapse, Balian rode a horse to meet Saladin.
After meeting Saladin, Balian says, "I will destroy all Muslims in Jerusalem and all buildings considered sacred to Islam."
Saladin was a person from the Kurdish minority who went to Egypt and was appointed king, and his base was too weak.
He had a grand dream of becoming the monarch of a unified Islamic world, but as he lacked a foundation, he needed absolute fame to achieve his dream.
Conquering Jerusalem would bring him absolute fame
However, it was a different story if Balian destroyed Muslims and Islamic temples in Jerusalem.
It was obvious that the forces trying to disparage him would criticize him as 'the person who attacked Jerusalem unreasonably, causing the death of Muslim brothers and the destruction of the Islamic temple.'
So at first he laughed at Balian for suggesting the absurd terms of surrender, but he soon realized Balian's true intentions and eventually accepted Balian's offer.
However, if they were to send them all away like this, there was a possibility that Saladin's political opponents would disparage him as 'a foolish person who let an enemy live when he could have killed them all because he was afraid of the threat of the infidels.'
Therefore, Saladin implements a policy of thorough tolerance to rule out the possibility of his political opponents undermining his assets.
He added a spoonful to Balian's demands and showed generosity by holding funerals for dead European knights, releasing captured enemies, and providing funds for the knights to return to their hometowns.
He made it clear that he had let the Catholics go not because of Balian's threats, but because he was a tolerant monarch.
In modern times, especially Muslims, talk about Saladin as if he were a symbol of Muslim tolerance.
    But this is very wrong
Saladin assassinated all high-ranking Islamic clerics in order to gain power in Egypt.
At the Battle of Hattin's Horn, 2,000 knights and soldiers captured were executed at once.
Saladin was a clever leader who knew when to instill fear and when to show mercy.
He dedicated his life to uniting the Islamic world in a chaotic Middle East where people hated their Islamic rivals next door more than the invading crusaders.
He was never biased by emotion when making political decisions. He did it without mercy, no matter how cruel it was, and showed mercy and tolerance when necessary, no matter how much he hated it.
He was a genius politician and military leader who always acted in the best interests of the country under thorough calculation.
