    Hey, quick note Johnny. It's not that they didn't want to give you the Swift sail in the gamecube version, they totally wanted to speed up the sailing, It's just that the Gamecube simply could not hold enough memory to sail any faster than we see in the final product. In the Wii U version, since the system was so much more powerful, the entire Great Sea is loaded simultaneously, allowing for the Swift sail. The problem couldn't have even been avoided by making the distance between islands smaller, because then more islands visible simultaneously would mean too much for the gamecube to handle, leading to super short draw distances. Overall, it was the best compromise possible to maintain that feeling of adventure on a wide area while allowing the player to see super far. Inconsequential nowadays, but it's fair to commend Nintendo for finding that compromise.

    • @OpXarxa
      @OpXarxa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +230

      fun fact: the reason the ocean was so fucking huge was, precisely, because it acted as an interactive loading screen. As you got away from an island, it started de-loading, and the ones you approached started loading. The ocean itself and it's minimal content put very little strain on the hardware.
      In other words, it was a clever, but tedious, trick to make the very first true open-world game run on a gamecube.

      Jak& Daxter did that shit in 2001 and it didn't just load ocean and smaller islands it loaded pretty open world-ish areas and dungeons. Keep in mind this was being done on the less powerful PS2 and the game runs better graphics. Wind waker loading is nothing impressive in that retrospect.

      Tbh, too much water is a valid criticism. The ocean is blank and boring. Having a large percentage of a game take place there means that a large percentage of the game takes place in a boring environment. Games are meant to entertain, not bore.

    The Pokémon franchise could learn a bit about having the player character emote a little from Wind Waker...

    • @silent6674
      @silent6674 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      That only goes for the cutscenes though. Everywhere else his expressions are about as good as Wind Waker Link's are.

    • @silent6674
      @silent6674 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Lyseolia Well in defense of BotW I have to say that Links neutral expressions go pretty well with his silent character. I mean that his expressions look like those of a quiet person do most of the time. Though, that doesn't really correspond to Links expressions everywhere else in the game. For example when he's done cooking some food and he can't wait to eat it, it's adorable. he doesn't look like the quiet tiyp in these situations at all.

    • @DataDrain02
      @DataDrain02 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      YES! I can NOT agree with this more.
      Sun and Moon's main character was probably one of the absolute worst in the whole franchise for that exact reason.
      Seriously, there could be an intense (well, intense for a Pokemon game at least) scene going on, all the other characters react accordingly, like, they're shocked or horrified.... Meanwhile, the main character just has... basically, this.
      ◉‿◉
      But yeah, hopefully, they'll fix that in the future.

      Firstly, different reviewers have different tastes. Some people like the calming waters to explore and others feel it is boring. You're being unreasonable. Imagine people hating you because you disliked something while your co-workers liked it.
      Secondly, with the ORAS review, The reviewer was abosultly right. At least Windwaker tried to use it to make exploration interesting. But in ORAS' case, the water routes added nothing, had very little interesting content, was boring to go through and reused the same pokemon over and over again.

      I know I'm late but you're point isn't too explained, some people like the water exploration in Oras and others didn't, it's just an opinion. The oceans are essentially just a different looking cave, and some fans like that, opinions are never a good fact, someone out there probably had fun with Bubsy.
      The problem with IGN is that they're opinions are treated as the facts when a review is supposed to be informative of the quality, a movie reviewer can personally dislike a character but a good one knows that as long as they're well written, then they're opinion isn't a fact.

      No IGN reviewer has ever stated their review was fact. It's always subjective and always was.
      Secondly, what makes a character well written? That's always an opinion, not a fact so a film reviewer can't ever say it's a fact.

    I remember wanting to give myself a challenge with Wind Waker, so I eventually came up with one... No sword!
    ...Well, your sword is mandatory, but because there are so many options in this game, you can actually get through a majority of the game without using it (the entirety of the Savage Labyrinth can be completed without pressing that B button even once). Playing on Hero Mode in WWHD and using my sword _only_ when there was no other way to progress (such as against the Forbidden Woods miniboss-- the Deku Leaf knocks it down, but there are no throwable items or enemy weapons to pick up, so you have to use the sword) was actually super fun. It made me love the combat system in this game, too, and the constant frantic nature of needing to pick up enemy weapons mentally primed me for when Breath of the Wild came out!

    • @Iinneus
      @Iinneus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh, and if anyone wants to try this challenge and is wondering how to beat Darknuts-- a horizontal Skull Hammer swing damages their armor, meaning you can break it if you hit them enough. Though this means that the Darknut in TotG requires the sword, but once that armor comes off, you can bomb him, knock the sword out of his hands, and use that instead.

      The hardest challenge you'll find with Wind Waker is trying to challenge yourself. I just finished a 3-Heart Run last night and while Puppet Ganon definitely gave me some trouble, everything else is (perhaps unsurprisingly) easy even with only 3 hearts.

    • @Iinneus
      @Iinneus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The sailing to me while lengthy, captures the sensation of sailing quite well. Most of the time it's just the waves to keep you company with the occasional island or encounter with allies/enemies. At the start the game encourages you in the direction you should go so the trips don't take too much time. That is until the third one where you arrive at nothing, get redirected to Windfall, get sent to Outset (GRAB GRAMMA'S SOUP), get the pearl, and then put them in place.
    To this date it's the only 3D Zelda game I've played through more than once, 5 times I believe including the HD one on Hero Mode...not that it's saying much because as said before this game is especially easy.

      Same!! Wind Waker was the first console Zelda I ever beat, and was also my first foray into Zelda in general. I got it as a birthday gift from my uncle, who pre-ordered it for me so I own the Gamecube Master Quest edition of OoT. HD was pretty much the driving force behind me getting a Wii U...that, and Monster Hunter. I can say I'm a proud owner of a Zelda edition Wii U B)

      @linguicaguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      WiiManElite You can unlock a way to fast travel. It's just that you can only travel to specific map squares, and if you wanna go to a certain island that you can't directly transport to, you have to warp to the closest spot and sail the rest of the way yourself.

      Also I tried sailing camp as a kid and wasn't especially fond of it, though that was likely because I was stuck in this small harbor with no good wind to work with. Now if I say...had an instrument to direct wind as I desired? Might be another story...or I can just play Wind Waker and get my fix, yeah we'll go with that one

    This is my favorite Zelda game! Sure you have a lot of sailing to do, but it never really bothered me honestly. I always had fun filling in the map, going from island to island, enjoying the world and characters that are so likable & feel alive, and just experience the adventures of Link...who is also my favorite Link in the series as well!
    It may not be the super difficult, but it's a lot of fun and to me...it does that well enough! That and I really like the story, simple as it is. Your actions MADE you a Hero, you weren't just another "incarnation" fated to save the world...your desire to help the people you care for, gave you the drive to push forward and overcome the challenges you face even as untrained and unprepared as you start off! You earned the right to hold the Triforce of courage...and its all because of what YOU did, not because of fate or destiny to "save the world"...but because of your love for your sister and those you care for...and the the lengths your going just to save them! It's simple, but that speaks volumes! :3

      Yeah, dude! Even Tingle's Tri-force map extortion section was more "just more time in this awesome universe" than "f**k you, Tingle! I'm quitting!". Then again I bought the Master Quest Edition since it was my first Zelda game, meaning I only played Ocarina of Time AFTER I completed Wind Waker. Maybe it's a different experience if you'd been waiting all that time for a sequel...

    • @philcoast1031
      @philcoast1031 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess so. My first Zelda was Majora's Mask, but I played it in the Collector's Edition (GCN), so when I got to Wind Waker I was both new to the series and had just finished a Zelda game, so I definitely didn't have to wait for too long or expect much from the next game.
      And Tingle's quest bothered me on the rupee paywall aspect a little, but yeah, it wasn't that bad.
      (Funnily enough, I think I'm experiencing this "the new game isn't exactly what I want" disappointment with Super Bomberman R. The cutscenes feel a bit too childish, and the graphics aren't impressive... but I'm so happy the series has returned that these issues are pretty minor. If only I had a Switch :P)

    The comments for Johnny's Twilight Princess Review will be a war zone some people consider the best game, some consider it ok,and some consider it the worst as for me, Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. And I won't be mad at John if he says it's bad I respect other people's opinions.

    • @metashade4218
      @metashade4218 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think the comments section in his Skyward Sword review will be much worst, considering how incredibly polarizing that game is, even more so than Twilight Princess, and the fact that John will most likely give that game a negative review will just add more fuel into the fire, since he said in one of the Brainscratchcomms videos that he was indifferent to Skyward Sword, & said it was a game he would never replay again, unless for a review or a sgb let's play.

      Leanne Herring Honestly I found Skyward Sword to be a pretty mix bag for me personally. Granted I don't hate the game like other people do, but at the same time, I wouldn't say it's all that great either.
      The game has WAY too much problems that hindered my enjoyment of the game, such as the baren overworld, motion controls not being responsive at times, the obnoxious backtracking, the amount of unnecessary padding just to make the game longer & the CONSTANT amount of handholding that the game bombards you with thanks to Fi always pointing out the obvious to you every 24/7, the game always giving you a paragraph of what item you got everytime you boot up the game & the game obnoxiously telling you what button you should press during the main quest. Seriously the handholding is so bad in that game that even Aonuma flatout admitted it & had to apologize for it.
      The only redeeming qualities I can say about the game is that the dungeons are fantastic, some of the bosses can be fun at times, the music is top notch & the characters & the story itself is all right, but the rest of the game just falls flat on its face imo.
      I honestly can't recommend this game to any Zelda fan unless if they're extremely curious in trying the game out. Honestly I think you're better off to just sticking with other 3D Zelda games instead, especially Breath of the Wild, since that game basically fixed all the problems that I had with Skyward Sword, but that's just me.

    This is legit my favorite 3D Zelda game. I played this for the first time just this year on the gamecube and at that point my experience with the 3D games was fully completing OoT(which bored me half way through the adult link portion until Ganon's tower) and MM(which I never finished, Great Bay drained me so much to the point it kinda broke the experience for me). But this game emediatly got me hooked because to my utter shock I was not playing as another living piece of wood but was insted given control over an actual human bieng.
    Secondly the ocean, I understand that some people don't like it, and admitidly there were times where I felt things were too empty, but it's shear vastness and the fact that you never actually explore the ocean in it's entirety if you recall(you get pushed back by the king if you try to go beyond the map), gives the world a greater sense of grandure and mystery of what's beyond the known map, something I don't think Hyrule or Termina utilized very well.
    Also that final boss fight was AWSOME.

    Am I the only one who didn't have a problem with the Triforce hunt in the original Wind Waker? I loved sailing the sea, so I always came across a lot of treasure. Treasure that was not spent because I didn't really have anything to spend it on, so it just sat there. So when I needed the 3000 something rupees, it wasn't really a problem because I already had a lot of rupees saved up, plus all the rupees I came across just hunting for the treasure charts.

      I just don't like that u have to wait till endgame to get them all. If it would've worked like say Metroid Prime 1 where your goal is to get all 12 Chozo Artifacts to reach the Impact Crater, but u can get 11 of them early through the main game as long u have those upgrade that is required and only one u need at the endgame where that part is at one of the room in the Phazon Mine that requires an Phazon Suit; which isn't far away from the room u faced Omega Pirate boss and get an Phazon Suit, than it would've been less padding.

    I....Actually really like the sailing in the GCN version. In fact, this is probably my 2nd favorite Zelda game to 100% complete, with Majora's Mask being #1. There's something theraputic about being out in the middle of nowhere, scanning the horizon for islands and filling out your map piece by piece. I like using sea charts to find sunken treasures, I'll never forget the first time I accidentally found a giant octorok, I guess I can understand the dislike of sailing but I don't agree with it.

And except for having to play the Wind's Requiem repeatadly, which is pretty annoying, I liked sailing. I get why people don't like it, but I'm OK with it. I didn't play a lot of the HD version, I didn't know they cut the whole paying Tingle for the Triforce charts. I guess half the Rupees in the game just became kind of useless, unless they added something else to buy.

    My experience with the original "Wind Waker" was a bit shaky. The Wii U remaster was another story. Took me only a fraction of the time that it did to beat the original. Thanks for the review. I'm glad you're gonna use the remastered version in your review of Twilight Princess. Took me only 5 days to beat. Would have been 4 if I hadn't stopped for a particular shenanigan. One that also led me to contributing something on GameFAQs. New copies of "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD" come with the "Wolf Link" amiibo, which is tied to one of the new things in the game. The original "Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess" had a dual platform release. One on the GameCube. The other on the Wii. I bought the GameCube version with my own money. Had a part-time job at the time. My sister bought me the remastered HD version. I actually heard the GameCube version of the original "Twilight Princess" outsold the Wii version. Not hard to see why. GameCube version kept one key aspect of the series intact. That aspect being Link's left-handed quirk. I can identify with him there. I'm a lefty in terms of swordplay as well. In fact, i can say that he was my teacher.

    Lemme list every 3D main Zelda game's best feature now for no reason. (Hyrule Warriors, Triforce Heroes, and Four Swords don't count.)
    Ocarina of time: The dungeonplay.
    Majora's mask: The characters.
    Wind waker: The graphics.
    Twilight princess: The story.
    Skyward sword: The combat. (Yes, I think Skyward Sword's combat is better than Breath Of The Wild's, because there's much more variety in Skyward Sword.)
    And BOTW: The world.

      I think the overworld is the best in the series till BOTW. It's open, has lots of stuff to do, is really fun to travel in (IMO) and harkens back to the core of the Zelda series which is exploration. You can find stuff and do minor segments out of order which is very rewarding and fun. I also think is has one of the best stories in the series.

      I do like the story. But the overworld comes up short for me, too.
      I understand this restriction was based on technological limitations, but the Great Seas just doesn't have all the amazing environments to find I wanted to. I get pleasantly surprised by three, maybe four islands. After that's it's all small chunks of land that hide a rupee, or something. But again, I understand they couldn't manage any more on the gamecube, so I wouldn't hold this against them.
      What I do have an issue with is the openness. Until you beat the Forbidden Forest, you're not allowed to go off the route by far.
      Not to mention, when you get to the part of the game where you're supposed to find Medli and Makar, the map marks both locations at once, implying you can play them in any order, but for some reason it still restricts you into doing Medli first.
      It's several hours of open-world blue-balling.
      Also, I think it's imperative to take Matthewmatosis' advice on leaving the exploration until the Triforce quest, otherwise it's a cycle of sailing for 10 minutes, finding an island, realising you've been there before, and moving on. It would take the Triforce hunt from monotonous to crazy boring.

      I admit it has flaws but I still think the overworld is genuinely good. You can tell they put genuine effort into it and it's vastly more interesting than the overworld in Skyward Sword.

    Too bad Tetra does a grand total of nothing in the sequel game, Phantom Hourglass, which in my mind is pretty much Wind Waker 0.5. Hey, for all we know, some of the dungeons that were scrapped for Wind Waker was probably put into Phantom Hourglass.

      @blazingwaters7469 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh god, don't remind about Phantom Hourglass. If Johnny included that game and Spirit Tracks in it, he would probably be thankful that doesn't have to deal with the slower speed and going through the same dungeon over and over again in WW.

    • @ShadowWing7439
      @ShadowWing7439 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The feeling's mutual. I actually do like Spirit Tracks much more than Phantom Hourglass. And Zelda does much more in that game than in Phantom Hourglass. Too bad she had to die in order to do that though

    • @blazingwaters7469
      @blazingwaters7469 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh yea, I like Spirit Tracks as well, but at best it's the "previous game but done right" (in the case of the last game, PH) deal. And there were segments that still annoyed me a whole lot *cough* Pan Flute *cough*. Still though, I had an enjoyable time with it since Zelda actually contributes like you said (though in a pretty ironic fashion), and I like how Link was definitely less of a "chosen hero" deal and more of a "well since you just happened to be at the right place at the right time, you can probably handle it" route, at least from what I can remember. Definitely not one of the best Zelda games, but it has a solid place around the middle.

      I know an island that was a console cameo was planned for WW (Called GC Island) but was scrapped. It was implemented in PH as Dee Ess Island (You can probably guess what it is).

    I actually like this game a lot better than Ocarina of Time. Despite all of it's flaws: the story, characters and atmosphere keep me so much more engaged than the bland heroes journey by the numbers that Ocarina had to offer. And the fact that it's on a console that has not aged horribly helps to.

    I hated Wind Waker.
    I get some love it. I respect that.
    What killed Wind Waker for me was... a lot of things.
    The dungeons had no memorable music.
    The partner dungeons felt like a chore.
    The majority of the islands were copy/paste versions of one another, and once you realized most of the "treasure" hiding out on those faraway islands was just a heart piece... it killed any incentive to go exploring.
    Sailing, even with the swift sail, was still boring.
    Combat felt like a brain dead exercise as most enemies could be subdued by rapidly slashing your sword. Even with the QTE Darknuts the combat never get complicated.
    And the final battle against Ganondorf never felt as epic as the fight with him in OoT. Even the music felt lethargic compared to OoT's final boss music.
    If you liked Wind Waker, cool. I can't help but wonder if there are people out there who feel as I do toward it.

    • @semvision

      Right here. The dungeons really killed it for me, it was one area where I think the game could have really redeemed itself, but they were not much to talk about.

      I love Wind Waker, but every single one of your points is legitimate to me.
      I'd like to add that the bow and arrow feels kinda unprecise.
      But I also think the battle with Ganondorf ends on a very satisfying note, since you stab him through the goddamn skull.
      Matthewmatosis described this game best to me, which it has a bare amount of content, and it's obviously rushed out with the cut dungeons that got replaced with the triforce hunt.

      I enjoy windwaker because of the esthetic and I like the story and world but I could not agree more with your points. There are things I love about windwaker but I find myself uninterested in playing it again because of the lackluster dungeons I feel I have to slog through.

    People's reaction to wind wakers art style was a huge overreaction. This game aged better than most from that era

    Don't forget about the Tingle Tuner! I'm still salty that they dropped it completely in Wind Waker HD. The Gamepad would have been perfect for that. But instead...Miiverse. Whoop-de-doo.

    Surprised you didn't mention Hero mode in the HD remaster though, that bumps up the game's difficulty to a pretty satisfying level.

    I found this game to be overall underwhelming. Good story, looks great, nice music, I like how Link generally handles, but overall it is my least favorite 3D Zelda because the content (dungeons, enemies, optionals) is just lackluster overall. The minigames just suck outright and the sidequests really don't have much to them. Sailing also gets really old really fast and contrary to what some people would claim, it has little to no depth and is not enjoyable beyond the initial novelty.

    I don't understand why people hate the sailing so much. I found it incredibly epic, the huge world, unbroken by loading screens, with the adventurous music playing. I always found the sailing very relaxing, after having to do all the dungeons, just being able to take my hands off the controller, and just tilt the c-stick around.
    I had very few problems with Windwaker. I enjoy it way more than Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I also love its sequels on the DS just as much. That's right, some of my favorite games ever were the Zelda DS games. I cannot stand Link to the Past because the combat isn't nearly as fun to me as the DS games.
    My point in this is saying that I have my own gaming experiences I enjoy, but I don't like games some other people may enjoy way more, and I'm fine with people not liking the same games as I do. I've gotten so much hate from people online and in real life just because I like the games starring Toon Link, and I'm not going to start raging at people and trying to destroy their own childhood memories in revenge. Every Zelda game is great. The problem is, some of them are designed differently, and thus our entry point into the series is going to dictate what other games in the series we like. This doesn't mean some games are bad, it just means they're designed differently. All Zelda games are fun to play, even the originals from the NES 30 years later. I haven't come across any Zelda games that seemed poorly made. Even Breath of the Wild being a gigantic open air game doesn't have a game breaking bug to its name.
