  • Omega Force requested to make Link's HYAHHs an art-form, with the result being Hyrule Warriors for the Nintendo Wii U. Of course, there's more to offer than that, but can this game find a market besides the Dynasty Warrior and Zelda demographic?

    I'm really enjoying this game as a Zelda fan, and as my first Dynasty Warriors title. I think it should be clarified, though, that the game has an element of strategy that goes beyond rampage killing the thousands of mindless baddies that flood the battlefield. Capturing bases and outposts is vital to winning a stage, especially later on, when bad guys get smarter in their strategies to attack your home base. So it's not really a "mindless" hacker and slasher as some critics would have you believe.

    • @TheGamefreak8
      @TheGamefreak8 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dynasty warriors game on the ds gave me the hardest time with that. I swear it's like the cpu must be cheating or something.

    • @DiscordedHaru
      @DiscordedHaru 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah there actually is a decent amount of strategy that is needed when playing the harder missions. It's based on whether or not the game needs you to solve an issue but it's still "omg what objective do I even work on FIRST?!".

    • @flameheadshero
      @flameheadshero 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's also strategy in taking out enemies efficiently which is important since you don't always have infinite time to mess around. Strategizing what combos to use to take out large crowds or single enemies is key and also many enemies have strategies to how you fight them. Like for example, if you hit a Darknut once (even if it blocks) and then dash behind it, it will immediately reveal it's weak point gauge. A reference to how Darknut's weaknesses have always been their backs. You can take them out really quickly this way and there's a lot of other enemies with strategies like this.
      Of course, you can just button mash your way through but on higher difficulties and especially in Adventure mode, that will make you lose the mission really easily.

    • @TheGamefreak8
      @TheGamefreak8 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      flameheadshero
      Agreed. Too bad most people just come to the conclusion that this is just a mindless rupee fest that takes no skill whatsoever.

    • @flameheadshero
      @flameheadshero 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      TheGamefreak8 This game is like Smash Bros in a way. Smash Bros was a fighting game that made things accessible. It threw away the wall of memorizing complex combos and made things easy to learn but added a hidden depth that was tougher to master.
      In a way this game does the same thing for action games. You don't get destroyed outright for not being the most skilled of gamers but you learn strategies and depth as you go and by the time you're taking on the toughest Adventure mode challenges, you're pulling off some really amazing techniques.

    I'm not a Zelda fan and I never played a Dynasty Warriors game before but when I saw trailers for this game, it really looked fun and I wanted to give it a shot. Needless to say, I had a blast tearing hundreds of enemies to shreds on the battlefield. That being said, I'm not a big fan of the fact that my allies has to be the most brain dead and incompetent NPCs I've ever seen in a video game. Also, even though I found it really fun, it quickly bored me and I dropped it after unlocking all the characters.

    • @KingEccent
      @KingEccent 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trust me man, it's even like that in Dynasty Warriors. AI Allies are completely incompetent, especially on lower difficulties. Sometimes, you even WANT them to be killed so that the game can stop reminding you that they are helpless.

    People tend to say this is a mindless action game, and that the npc's are useless.
    Both aren't really true.
    You need to be thinking about what's happening on the battle field, what bases are in danger, what allies are in trouble, the main objective. ( In adventure mode you'll also be saying ) how many kills do I have? What's the time? Gotta make sure I don't get hit too many times.
    That's not even mentioning your various character specific worries, I gotta build up my dark meter on Ganon. I need a water shield for Shiek, Just another water attack and I can shoot Ruto's tidal wave.
    This balance makes the game really enjoyable.
    The NPC's do fair decently well, they won't be your offense but they will be your defense. You are just one person so you are much better attacking keeps and letting your allies hold them down. Your named guys will be able to fight but might need back up. Once you learn that they are better suited to hold the line and only need help doing so when the bigger grunts come their way things work much better.

    Totally agree with you on the voice acting thing. Every time I mention "Zelda" games should have voice acting, I get bombarded with hate and mentioning of the CDi games. *rolls eyes* The cutscenes feel so lifeless with no words coming out of the characters. I feel like Tecmo Koei wanted to do voice acting, but Nintendo refused, being stubborn. The fans are also a factor, being unable to try something again for fear of it being bad.

    • @Fatboyftw32
      @Fatboyftw32 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest this probably would of been the perfect time to try it again I mean first it's a spinoff, if the voice acting was terrible Nintendo could just say it was a one time thing and that they would never taint the main series with it. Plus it's a Dynasty warriors game, even if the voice acting was bad well it's not like dynasty warriors fans aren't used to it since the voice acting in those games have always been bad (until 7 anyway).

    • @NintendoSEGAreviewer
      @NintendoSEGAreviewer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Fatboyftw32, you literally took the words out of my mouth. This was the perfect chance to try it! Fans would still complain. I wish they would just give us the option to have voice acting on, or for people who don't like the voices, have an option to have the characters shout their usual gibberish. Would it kill to have options? Everybody wins.

    Hyrule Warriors is repetitive, but it helps that you are continually strengthening your cast of characters, albeit slowly. Still, it feels empowering and great to wipe out fields of enemies and conquer their bases. The chance to play as this many characters from the Zelda universe, each with their own attacks and weapons, is reason alone to own this game!

    I'm surprised you didn't really go more into how the combat works, like the strong and weak attack dynamics and unique character gimmicks. I think that would go a long way in showing people that this game isn't as repetitive as they think.
    Also I don't care what anyone says, Lana is the best character in this game. Besides the book being awesome, any character that can invoke a j pop idol while riding a fire-breathing argorok through battle is the awesome in my book.

      It is quite a short review. He really only does the explanations for stuff such as the 3D Sonic games. Most of the time it's just him saying his opinions, which is fine but like in some of his earlier reviews, relatively deep explanations of the game-play is really nice..

    • @papershadow

      I do agree. Johnny doesn't really go that deep into elements like weakpoints, or why controlling keeps is important. Even if it is quick to learn, understanding those points is part of the strategy to the game.
      The short-term play is repetitive, that I'll concede, but the difficulty and strategy to the game comes from knowing how to prioritize your actions and what your allies can usually manage on their own or for how long.

      The only thing I don't like about Ganondorf is how slow his attacks are. Especially since he has zero invulnerability during them. You can take so much damage without realizing because of his tendency not to flinch. Still, doing his 5 weak, 1 strong combo is so fun to use in huge crowds.

      TheGamefreak8 True, Zelda games use the same storyline, but there's a gimmick thrown into each game to make it an entirely different adventure. Like Majora's Mask with the mask changing and three day life cycle, Wind Waker's ocean, or (while small changes) Twilight Princess's Twilit Realm and Skyward Sword's sky.

      When you break it down, all games are repetitive. They're all based around a main mechanic and it works from there. When games try to make everything in the game vastly unique from each other, usually everything will be mediocre but nothing will be great. In any case, I feel that the gaming community has come to see repetition as being inherently bad. That's not always the case as some of the most repetitive things in life are the most enjoyable.

    Glad you gave this game a proper review and said what needed to be said. DW is definitely a niche series but I believe that this is one of the best Warriors games that juggles the mechanics and gameplay between Zelda and Warriors. They really went out of their way to make sure this has the best balance of both and just playing the game feels good in comparison to the worse, B-team developed Warriors games.
    Johnny is also right by saying this is basically a stress reducer: you play Warriors takes to just mostly have fun but damn is it good fun.

    • @TeeKH

      Most people hated Other M because of Samus' personality based on a retconed manga of the same name; Samus suffered PTSD only seeing Ridley once when, in every other game with him in it, she stomped his ass countless times. I really don't think it was because of VA alone.
      For a better explanation, watch somecallmejohnny's review of Other M.

    • @ssjichigo666
      @ssjichigo666 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tee KH I have the game myself and the only thing I hate is how they do the ability limitations, the prime series gave a better reason, but I still enjoyed the gameplay and the story, and with the ridley thing, its logical that after all the times she has defeated him, and he just keeps coming back, after a while it would start getting to her and she may start realizing her own mortality, she defeated him in the first game, then someone revived him as a cyborg in the prime series, and she defeated him in prime 3, and then in super metroid he came back again, maybe she is starting to think he is indestructible, and finally the memories of her parents dieing against him is starting to sink in

    I'm not a huge Zelda fan (I've recently gotten into the series myself) and I never played a Dynasty Warriors game and I just love this game. I think it's the charm and the huge fan service (for the Zelda side) the game has to offer. And I love Zelda's model in this game. Next to the Skyward Sword model, this is my favorite model I've seen from the Zelda franchise in years. And Link looks awesome in that scarf.

  • @WaddleDee105
    @WaddleDee105 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    It's basically "baby's first action game". Brain dead enemies, limited amount of moves, bland environments, long healthbars as a substitute for real difficulty, etc.So many Zelda fanboys are falling for this garbage and eating it up simply due to the fanservice. It's nice to look at but has no substance and isn't worth playing.
    If you want a fun action game, go play Devil May Cry 3, Wonderful 101, or the new Bayonetta 2. Hell, if you're awful at videogames and those are too tough for you then just play God of War.

    • @WaddleDee105
      @WaddleDee105 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      flameheadshero God of War is a "Simple" action game yet is has FAR more depth to it then Hyrule Warriors. (Don't even get me started on the truly great action games that put even GoW to shame such as DMC3, GodHand, etc.) There is barely anything to Hyrule Warriors and the game doesn't really encourage thoughtful play anyways. It's all a pointless chore.
      If you get satisfaction from literally doing the same moves over and over again with no thought put into it all then good for you but I need just a tad more then that to actually enjoy a game. No fanservice is enough to salvage such a low-effort title.

  • @paoerfulone1089
    @paoerfulone1089 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Awesome review as always Johnny! I was pleasantly surprised by this! :)
    As far as the whole voice-acting scenario around the Zelda series goes.
    I will admit, that I am curious and would like to see Nintendo give it shot, just once, to see how it goes, and if it's good, then awesome. But if it's something that the Zelda series never tries out and just sticks with text-bubbles and dialogue, then I'm fine with that too.
    As long as the game itself is good, or lives up to expectations, and it has all of the things that I play a Zelda game for (Great Dungeon Design, Beautiful Overworld with things to do, see, or unlock, Fun Sidequests, Good Narrative Plot, and Great Combat) in it, then voice-acting (good or shitty), or no voice-acting, I'll be satisfied customer.

    • @kyrenity
      @kyrenity 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Then allow me to rephrase. The Dynasty Warriors formula is far too simple and repetitive for me, and the fact that it has got a Zelda theme adds NOTHING to my interest for this game despite me being a massive Zelda fan. If I ever see anything more to this game than button mashing through non-active enemies to get up to slightly-active enemies then I'll take another think about whether to buy it. It's something that isn't worth more than $10 imo; all there is to enjoy from it can be had by watching someone play it online.

      The bigger ones ( I.e ones with health bars ) will actually attack you and can deal damage. If you get in a fight with a named character watch out they can and will hit you.

    i wonder what people who thoroughly enjoyed the first Dynasty Warriors game, when it was a fighting game and saw that they made a second one, but then got surprised that they changed the genre of the franchise thought about the change

    I get a lot of fun from the co-op too in Hyrule Warriors. It's the perfect game to play when me and my brother just chill. We can chat and just go on auto pilot when playing.

    Johnny's not kidding when he mentioned that there were many innuendos in this game. Most notably in the Temple of Souls stage in Legend Mode. The thing where Cia notices that Link is using the Master Sword. When I saw that, it resulted in a facepalm after I paused the game. I've heard more than my share of gutter jokes thanks to my older sister. So it's relatively easy to tell that Cia's "sword" comment was one such joke.

    I own this game. Sure it can get repetitive but the best part is having to enjoy everything with all the different characters. Even the villains.

    I've seen my allies do some crazy crap before, it's insanely rare but it's nice to see a keep nearly taken out from my allies alone

    Now it's on the Switch, with everything from both the Wii U and 3DS versions. I think it's a really solid deal.

    Played the game at my buddy's house & I fell in love with it (not literally) so I went out & got a copy of it for my Wii U

    I've really been enjoying this game and I love all the Zelda-esqe secrets. Like beyond using bombs to beat King Dodongo did you know if you strike a Darknut then dodge behind it, it will immediately reveal it's weak point gauge. It's a reference to how using a back slice in Twilight Princess would work on them and it works wonders. You can also pull down Aerolfos with the hookshot just like in TP and reveal their weak point guage.
    And a lot of enemy captains like Big Poes have special attacks that if you hit them with a certain item while they're charging it, they'll lose control and do damage to themselves and their allies. Seriously, try hitting a lizalfos with an arrow when it's glowing white and charging the move where it send a fire wall forward. The result is hilarious. Also enemies have elemental weaknesses and resistances... well I guess that's more of a pokemon thing but still.
    I don't think the game is too simple, it's actually at the perfect level for me. It has its nuances but you can learn how to play well from experience, experimentation and strategy and there's not a huge proficiency wall like many more complex action games have. I guess you could say it has the smash bros. philosophy but applied to an action game.

    Great Review as usual Johnny, but if Nintendo ever decides to add voice acting they should add a "Classic Mode" for people who don't want voice acting. In my opinion I would LOVE the option for the characters to speak Hylian.

    Hyrule Warriors is the first Dynasy Warriors game I've played, I got HW because Im a massive Zelda fan, so I really enjoyed this game. It maybe repetitive but it is fun and there is ALOT of content, especially if you get the DLC which is very good value imo.
    However I have found its the kind of game I seem to not pay for a couple of weeks, then all of a sudden I will be in the mood and play it for a few days before once again leaving it for another few weeks.
