I come from a town with 12 reserves bordering it and that's what we did all the time, "HEY VICTOR, WHAT ABOUT YOUR DAD?" That's just how everyone greeted each other. Everyone knew the film, so much so that the jackpot at our local casino was called Smoke Signals.
***** well, been call Indian is stupid since now that we all know Columbus was lost looking for India.....liked I said I am Denesuline..what about you?? see that's how Natives do it..unless you have no culture or lost your culture..plus the BIG difference is that Canada keep the treaties with the Natives which is why our culture in Canada is still strong and alive..plus the Natives still speak like their Ancestors and live off the land..something American Natives forgot..when people say Native Americans they think American Natives not Natives from Canada where Natives actually are in control..not like AMERICA...now do you get it why just Native works..shit..America made the world believe we are all dead and gone but in reality we are NOT..this is why I don't like been call "Native American"..I prefer Dene or First Nation.
I show this film every year to kids in a detention center. A lot of them have issues with their dads, whether they are Native or not, so they can relate. They often recite lines from the film for a week afterward.
I saw this in alternative school after release. I didn’t get to finish this or Othello but I got the important parts. To stand up for yourself while also turning the other cheek. To use humor instead of impulsive violence. You don’t hear it enough but you really do make a difference. Some of us remember you by name well into our 20s. Thanks for providing the love and support most of us have never seen. ❤
This scene has become a family classic in my house. To this day when we're driving down the road my kids and I will randomly start singing John Wayne's Teeth. Loved this movie.
I only found this movie this past year. I found it profoundly moving and at times, hilarious. I am not first nations, but am bicultural, from Hawaii. Yet the few times in my life I have been invited to share in native/tribal celebrations as a guest, I have felt as if I was "home." I wish everyone could see this movie and appreciate it as much as I do. It has the best thoughts ever about reconciliation, and about fathers and sons.
Thank you for putting this on youtube I have not seen this movie and over 20 plus years HBO don't show movies like this no more this is one of my favorite movies thank you
lmao Well they did have a powwow somewhere else, and I remember watching this in class and instantly everyone loved it. I still love it to this day. I've seen this movie as much as Thomas saw Dances With Wolves
It was hilarious af cuz of how dumb ag it cuz cuz he acted....dumb af. I was legit excited for the movie when I saw he was in it then...oh...there he goes.
Watched this movie in English class this week to compare it to the short story upon which it is based. The song must be stuck in my head to the point that I am singing it subconciously because now my 5 year old son is singing about "Heya John Waynes teeth."
Good movie. Lmao at "Geez Victor I guess your warrior look doesn't work every time" I like how Thomas can see the humor in this situation. If you haven't seen this movie Victor just told Thomas that he needs to change his look and toughen up with a stoic face or people will walk all over him. Love the t-shirt "Frybread Power"
I'm not native but I loved the movie - it just takes an interest in people - this movie is funny and sad all at once and it is deep and significant but not full of itself - that's about as good as any movie can hope to be.
Funny and sad. The history teacher that showed us this movie also wanted to play us a protest song during a different unit called “Napalm Sticks to Kids” You might like it, it’s funny and sad.
I got sent to juvie in northern Ontario when I was a kid, this was one of the movies they showed us after school one day lol, almost 15 years later I come to watch clips of it online, what a trip
love this movie, just seen it has been added to the National Film Registry, saw it first time more than 10 years ago, lost count how many times I have re watched it, and I first came across it watching on a channel broadcast from Saudi Arabia, shame that in Europe you hardly can know of this film, I have it posted on my facebook page
I love this movies I have met this actor's that play Victor and Silace or wherever they spell his name the actor Simon Baker and the older him on the movie. 😂🙂
*So, why don't they want to sit in the back of the bus? Because, it's next to the bathroom, and every time someone takes a dump, you have to sit there and smell it! Torture if you are on a long, long bus ride!*
Not always the cowboys don't always win yeah John Wayne I'm talking to you!!! LOLZ John Wayne's teeth heya heya are they real are they false are plastic are he steal heya heya oh heya heya!!
Relax man. What's with the hostility? If you know you're responding to a 13 year old what's with the insults and curse words about a young teenage girl's opinion over a movie? There's a lot more in life that you're going to have to deal with that's a lot more difficult than how you feel about a movie. Get your self some more knowledge and sense while you can that will be useful to you beyond taking offense at every perceived slight, real or imagined.
Actually .... We prefer Indigenous ... Because "Native" Means you were born and raised in an area. Indigenous means that your people are found nowhere else on earth .
Ever hear the saying, "don't sweat the small stuff?" You have to know when to pick your battles and when to let things go. You can't make a big deal out of everything or you end up getting popular with the legal authorities. Then they end up pulling you over or hassling you every time they see you or you end up inside a jail cell then good luck with your employment opportunities, getting a loan at a bank, legally owning a firearm, or catching hell for defending yourself when you get attacked.
No matter what rez you go to, you can shout, "HEY VICTOR", and someone will hear and smile and know exactly what you're referencing.
F.r tho lmao
L Swogs yup😂😂
😂
LMAO, this was filmed on my Rez. You can only imagine how often we still yell this! No matter you generation either!
Its my life goal to sit in the back of a bus with a fellow Native and sing this.
Hahaha... Hell Yeah!
sko den!
Yup
AHO
lets get on a bus and sing 👍😂
this movie is a jewel in the native American heavens....with Adam Beach as the brightest star.
ummm you do know he's Canadian right? actually both of these actors are Canadians. if you like him check out "Dance me outside" movie.
Um you do know that Canada is FULL of Native Americans, white people made that border not us. Natives occupied North AND South America. wow
Dani P
I am Denesuline...so I know about my culture lol

Naw..We native know the real History of our lands so we say Native or First Nations..

“Are they false? Are they real? Are they plastic? Are they steel?” Oh, I love this movie SO MUCH
The subtlety of the stolen seats and then they're forced to be at the back of the bus is such a perfect analogy for us natives.
Yes, it is a very sharp analogy.
Hoka He
Love This movie
Never noticed this actually thanks
I like how the stolen seats were the perfect analogy for stolen land.
I mean the scene wasn't exactly trying to be subtle about it.
@Henry Butters "this is the way it is" is a bad historical take created during the colonial era to justify atrocity to citizens back home.
These customers don't own their seats and you can't steal something that isn't owned.
@@echelon2k8 it's a metaphor bruh
@@michaelreagan3035 Just pointing out that it's a flawed analogy, that's all.
I show this film every year to kids in a detention center. A lot of them have issues with their dads, whether they are Native or not, so they can relate. They often recite lines from the film for a week afterward.
That's beautiful. Thank you for your work!

"I think there's something wrong when you don't see a man's teeth"
20 mins after just getting on Thomas' case for not looking Stoic enough lol
Lmao!
Victor is just as doofy as Thomas; or rather, Thomas is as serious as Victor
In my family, you are not completely Native until you see this movie lol I love being Aboriginal.
"Shut up Thomas."
This is my favorite part! Proud to be native.

Mahalo from first nations. May you walk in beauty and find your life's needed blessings.
They told them to have a powwow, and so they had a powwow
Facts 🤣🤣
I was shocked to find out this flim was added to the national film registry!
Good choice though,it's a great movie
I was stuck in the hospital waiting room last week for hours, someone called Victor to go in. I said Hey Victor and the whole room of people laughed 😂
Thank you for putting this on youtube I have not seen this movie and over 20 plus years HBO don't show movies like this no more this is one of my favorite movies thank you

Too bad Adam Beach was the first guy to be killed in Suicide Squad
i was so pissed when that happened because i was looking forward to seeing him in it :(

I love this movie so much! Memories with a Good Friend/Brother watching this
When I heard
"TOM"
I just looked😂
This is the only pow-wow song I can sing. Probably why I never made it into the drummers from my community
Don't give up!! It took me 65 years to finally drum, and then COVID-19 hit... I drum in my heart and from music and I will return!!
If this movie was in 2020 the guy in the cap would of been wearing a Make America Great Again cap 🤣
This is my favorite clip from the whole movie.
I'm in love with Adam Beach....

"hey victor" is it just me or does he sound irish
It's you.
I kind of think that too
Canadian
The actor is from Canada. And the setting of the movie is close to the Canadian border.
That's how Native Americans' accents sound. Maybe watch another educational video out on the Rez and you'll know
We had to watch this movie in class freshman year and there was a kid named Victor in my class haha
I love this movie. I still haven't figured out John Wayne's teeth yet haha. Way out here in mars Arizona....I think it's steel.

This was the best part.
This was the funniest scene
No Native Americans ( is that the right term?) In England...I wish there were..would be great to meet them socially..
Actually .... We prefer Indigenous ... Because "Native" Means you were born and raised in an area. Indigenous means that your people are found nowhere else on earth .
No they are known as Indians;
No we prefer to be called " Native ."
jesse sikes Then thats what you should be referred as. Anyone using any other term is just an AO.
Come to the U.S. then, then visit a reservation. I'd say go for the Navajo due to its size and location.
