Bonus Oreo Fact: There was once an Oreo cookie called Big Stufs which were roughly 10 times the size of a regular Oreo. They were discontinued in 1991.
It's named after the molecules in water. They wanted the name to convey purity and goodness. They got it partly there...cleaning fluid does make things pure, in a way. But yeah, the periodic table is not a good source for food names.
I said the same thing when I heard the name. Ring around the tub? Grime on the stove? Kids can't keep their hands off the walls? Use Hydrox all surface cleaner!
I suspect that this was due to the fact that they were originally marketed as a high-class cookie, for serving at tea parties, dinner parties, and other formal functions. It's even been suggested that the name "Oreo" was chosen to reflect this, as "or" is the French word for gold and the original package was a golden-colored tin. However, there are other theories about the origin of the name as well.
countless times people keep commenting this. I’m tired of typing paragraphs, I’m just going to say it’s because snacks during 1900-20 were extremely toxic. They tried coming up with a name that was “pure”, which they based off of water, which had hydrogen and oxygen, which they mixed. This was the reason they became popular, and also the reason why it died.
Wow, I work in a British food chain's in-store bakery, and I never realised that Oreo doughnuts weren't sold in the US (my store sold them before we even stocked oreos). Fun fact, we actually get them frozen and let them defrost before packaging them in standard doughnut twinpack boxes, along with cardboard sleeves that come with the doughnuts themselves.
Both of which ripped of the traditional custard and bourbon creams which where two plain biscuits sandwiching vanilla cream and chocolate biscuits covering chocolate cream respectively.
Regular Oreos are better than Double Stuf. The regular is a perfect combination of creme and cookie, whereas the creme overpowers the cookie in the Double Stuf.
All these trendy Oreo flavors make me just wish I had a normal Oreo. The best Oreo spinoff, without a doubt though, are the white fudge-covered Oreos available around Christmas time. 🤤
Great videos guys love the new channel! Only thing I have to say is that I think the music is a little loud, just a tad! I end up listening to the music more than the facts, on your other channels the music is usually a little lower
I'm not fucking surprised that Oreo became the dominant cookie. I mean, come on... Hydrox? That's the LEAST appetizing name for a cookie in existence. It sounds like a fucking bleach cleaner.
A lot of people forget this. Malt-o-Meal (owned by Post) was still selling Oreo O's for those 10 years, they just couldn't use the branding. The big bags of "Cookies and Cream" cereal was the same stuff.
Oreo O's came back last year. For a while it was only through Wal-Mart as part of a marketing deal, but now you should be able to find them in any grocery store.
Thanks guys! Really interesting video! Thanks to living in UK I can fill my life with Oreo doughnuts which I love!!! Brilliant voiceover by brutalmoose too!
I just discovered this yesterday when I was out and about with my family, I was looking for some Oreos for my new apartment I could not find Oreos but I couldn't find two packages of Hydrox cookies, I found them at my local Menards who carries them, I brought them home and as soon as I got home I noticed on the packaging that it said America's original sandwich cookie and my initial thought was there's no way everyone knows it's Oreo and then I did a simple Google search and I read the back of the packaging and lo and behold the history speaks for itself the packaging was telling the truth. Oreo is the knockoff brand. I will now get Hydrox cookies every chance I get. Especially as a diabetic since it has less sweeteners and actually natural sugar that's better for us any way. :) And of course as a history buff, I felt proud knowing that I was bringing the original product into my home. :)
They didn't finish the Oreo O's story, it gets more interesting. Post saw all of this hoopla with the importation of the cereal, and decided to do a little experiment. Like the man said, they couldn't use the Oreo name, but they still had the rights to the recipe. Ever heard of Malt-O-Meal? They're that company that makes quality generic versions of name-brand cereals, and sells them in those big plastic bags you find on the bottom shelf of the cereal aisle. Post has owned them since 2015. Two years after the buyout, Malt-O-Meal released a generic Cookies and Cream cereal... which was literally just the original Post Oreo O's recipe, sans marshmallows. They made a deal with Walmart to sell it as an exclusive product, and it flew off the shelves. They showed Nabisco what had happened, and they agreed to license the brand. Post sold the revived cereal just through Walmart at first, and then everywhere else. You can still buy it as of March 2019.
Why yes, I did know Hydrox were the original. But hey, it got to be part of the Keebler brand, so that's a pretty nice consolation prize. I wonder if there might be a video on Ritz crackers at some point? There was a type of Ritz Bitz with smore flavoring that I used to love as a kid and never knew what happened to it...
Oh man, those british Oreo cakes and doughnouts looked so good! It seems every country/region has their own exclusive Oreo product. Here in Argentina we have Oreo Alfajores (Alfajor: Basically a latin american mini cake, similar to moonpies) They even come in two different versions: One made and distributed by Oreo, and other made with Milka chocolate & Dulce de Leche. They're very good. If you love Oreos, you should try Oreo Alfajores out!
Fact: Oreo's are stacked VERTICALLY in brazilian packages (like in this shape: [OOOO] ), probably to sell less cookies for higher prices. The cookies are also smaller and have less cream inside.
My uncle and me used drive through Hoboken all the time. I had no idea that's where the first official Oreo was sold. I also never Oreo way when passing NY
Okay but let's not forget about those Oreos that are coated in chocolate, idk what country they're from but I get them from the foreign foods section and they're amaaaazing
I like how Mario kart double dash music plays during oreos. also I admire how Did you know is expanding and is going to dominate youtube.. and hopefully surpass WatchMojo
Oreos now have half the amount of creme they used to have in the 90s. And the double stuf cookies now have the same amount of cream that regular Oreos used to have. The mega stuf Oreos now have the same amount of cream double stufs used to have. It’s all very annoying.
Nabisco vendors at grocery stores actually got in trouble for hiding the Hydrox cookies behind other things on shelves to make it harder for them to compete with Oreos.
Bonus Oreo Fact: There was once an Oreo cookie called Big Stufs which were roughly 10 times the size of a regular Oreo. They were discontinued in 1991.

@Julio Shoe That's what everyone says, and probably one of the reasons why Oreos always heavily outsold them.
I said the same thing when I heard the name. Ring around the tub? Grime on the stove? Kids can't keep their hands off the walls? Use Hydrox all surface cleaner!
I thought the same thing when I used to see them in the store as a kid, actually. Haha.

When I worked at a Dairy Queen in high school, our "Oreo" Blizzards were made with Hydrox cookies.
Hydrox cookies are so good. I always preferred them back over Oreo in the 90s. I was so excited when they were brought back in 2015.

If you account for inflation, Oreos sold in 1912 cost the equivalent of $8.23 in today's money. They're actually cheaper now.
now that makes sense

Hydrox just sounds like a bad cookie name. I could see it as a lotion, or maybe some sort of medication, but not a cookie.
