Double Stuffs were released to the market in 1974. As a person slightly more ancient than that, I can attest to the fact that when I was a kid, they really were thicker than now and so were the originals! Since then, both regular AND Double Stuff have gotten smaller, and the newer Mega is about what Double Stuffs were in the 80s.
That’s what I’ve heard, and definitely seen a part of in recent years since the double stuffs stopped being as evenly filled and as big as they used to be.
markiplier was right it's all shrinkflation soon, double stuffed oreos will just be regular oreos and regular oreos will just be thin oreos and thin oreos will just be the cookie
@@jockeyfield1954 yeah, marketers have found the best price-cookie ratio for getting as much profits as possible. Reducing the amount of cookies or increasing the price to keep the contents of the cookies the same while also keeping the profits similar enough is impossible. Either people are like "I used to buy 10 cookies for this price, not 8" or "I used to pay 5$ for a full pack, I refuse to pay 6$", so the only option left is reducing the amount that goes into the products. In these cases, its not really the companies trying to screw you over anymore than they were before, its simply companies trying to maintain the same income. So basically, the current day Mega Oreo is the exact same recipe as the Double Stuff, with the price representing inflation between the 80's and the 20's. To be fair, I gotta blame capitalism on this one. Trying to find the best way to sell things to people for the maximum profit, rather than going for the second or third most profitable way, means you cant really get away with small adjustments due to inflation or scarcity. If they went for the third most profitable way, they could now upgrade to the second most profitable way, but with adjusted prices.

Oh, but I do love a few Oreo Mint Thins! Mint is a bit more tolerable than regular cream. (after a few though I'm back to scraping off the cream part lol)
I can't believe I have an answer for this. The double stuff package weighs less than a traditional of similar volume. You are indeed getting fewer cookies and the volume not used is replaced by lighter cream.
I usually buy party packs of the regular stuf Oreos rather than the double or mega stuf because the extra creme does in fact take up extra room in the packaging and thus reducing the amount of cookies per pack. I figured this out by comparing the serving sizes and number of servings on each package
The amount of self control one would need to not eat a million of those is truly immense. I have a lot of self control, but not enough to stop myself from eating those Oreos.
The best way to separate the cookies from the cream is to use a vacuum chamber. Obviously Matt probably doesn’t have access to a vacuum chamber but to anyone who does have access to one, you can probably do this experiment the most accurately.
Have ya’ll talked about how some restaurants play faster music, and it makes them more stressed out and want go eat faster to get out faster? I realised this occurs more in fast food or casual dining places versus high tea or “fancier” dining places where they play calming classical music. Would love a scientific theory breakdown video on this!
I think he kinda covered that in his "Food Theory: You've Been SCAMMED...and Never Knew It! (Supermarket Secrets)" where supermarkets play gentle music with slow rhythms to make you stay longer and get decision fatigue. I would suppose restaurants want the opposite, order as fast possible so next person can order, especially since each order gives a very small margin of profit (more often less than a dollar per item). quantity matters more there.
I'm almost 50 years old and I can tell you for certainty. Oreo's have become much thinner over the past 30+ years. I remember them being bigger and have pictures to prove their size is NOT just my memory working of a child's perspective and perception of things being bigger than they actually are as an adult. 100% guarantee, they have become thinner regarding the creme filling and the cookie part has become much darker and dryer tasting. Sure times change and products gets replaced or simply change in time, but the size of the cookie is factory printed. THAT size has gotten smaller and thats what I'm referring to.
I’ve always thought they’ve shrinkflated the amount of cream over the years because I remember thinking standard was the perfect cookie to filling ratio but now it’s the double stuff and the standard seems significantly smaller
Honestly, I think they just made Double Stuff the standard (it costs the same too,) so it may be a case that's less based on shrinkflation and more a case of trying to reduce consumer portion sizes due to increases in obesity concerns (people are less likely to buy junk food if they're constantly worried about weight gain 🤔 )
So, for just academic research: Matt, how much stuf can you stuff on your cookie before it legally stops being a cookie? For academic research, of course.
since you know melting the cream only makes it harder to separate, i really thought you would notice cooling the cream will make it easier to separate. i separate the cream from the cookie almost perfectly every time i tried.
Yeah when he said he was gonna melt it I already knew it wasn’t going to work. Putting them in the fridge of freezer of a few minutes would’ve worked a lot better
Four minutes in and I'm like: If Matt has a vacuum chamber and stuck some Oreos in that, the cream will be VERY easily pulled off with nothing attacked to the cookie itself
That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't have a lot of experience with oreos, but if I was trying to separate them I'd freeze them first and then it should be easy.
I always assumed the cream sticks to the “bottom” piece in the assembly machine. Some big machine plops a hot blob of cream on the bottom wafer and then the next section smooshes the “top” wafer on it by which time the cream has cooled somewhat thus sticking less to the top. I admit I’ve never actually seen how Oreos are put together so for all I know it’s all goblins and magic 🤣
If you have a vacuum chamber, put the Oreos in the vacuum chamber and when you’re done you can separate the cream an cookie perfectly! I think you can make an vacuum chamber at home but I don’t remember how to do it.
I'm curious why no one thought of freezing, dehydrating, or the ultimate freeze drying to separate the cream and cookie. Since the water content by volume for the cream is the same since it's the same cream, doing a dry weight comparison should be just as valid. Additionally, the question of weight vs. volume vs. thickness should all be checked for thoroughness to make sure the company can't use any of those as an "out" to explain the results. The easiest solutions for drying would be a beef jerky machine (then you also get to make all kinds of jerkies! Food Theory: which jerky is the best jerky for protein vs. cost vs. taste) and you already have the freezer of course.
@@Jade-ki8un I feel like that wouldn't be accurate enough. There's no way to know for certain if those wafers are the exact same as the ones that make up the actual whole oreos or if they're made differently.
I feel like they're better off with the current level of creme for the default. With double stuff I very quickly feel like I'm going to die once I eat three.
@@appleseed8282 That might be intentional on the default's end. If you feel like you can eat more than three, then chances are you're more likely to eat more than three, and run out sooner.
I had a friend who's little sister decided to separate all the oreos of a brand new package and filled 2 rows with wafers and 1 with cream they threw that package away
I gotta say, my favorite ratio by far is Thin Mint Oreos. Nothing beats that satisfying clean SNAP feeling when you bite it. I also just prefer cookie over creme in general.
I actually like the thin ones, especially with Coffee. They need to bring out mint creme in the Uk, man that sounds real nice, haven't had oreos in a minute.
to get the cream out without getting some cream inside the pattern of the cookie, try twisting the oreo, if the cookie breaks, try again. If you do manage to get only one side of the cookie, try rolling the cookie with your finger.
I remember when Oreos first came to my home country. The normal ones used to be 2x size. Then they became unspeakably thin and suddenly: DOUBLE SIZE, MORE EXPENSIVE, SAME AS OLD REGULAR SIZE. I stopped buying Oreos…

@@Golden12500 Why would someone eat the whole package? It's not a serving size of "1 package". Or, why would someone eat until they feel sick? That sounds like a self control problem, not an Oreo problem.
Being a Stuf lover, I remember when the Most Stuf Oreos came out as a limited edition. I estimated them to be about 4x the Stuf of the baseline cookie. I didn't think it was possible, but triple stacking a Most actually had too much Stuf...
I find best way to seperate if you want the cream off completely. Freeze them Works really well. Its what I do when I need the cookies for like a pie crust.
I use one of those small sharp non-serrated knives to separate the double stuff from the wafer after using the twist method to get the cleanest separation. Then I take two more double stuffs use the twist method on both of them and then combine the 3 double stuffs to get an octopule stuffed Oreo.
I'm definitely one of those people who like the cookie more than the cream, so double stuff is too much for me and the standard is perfect. But I also like other flavors more than the standard. I like the dark chocolate, the chocolate hazelnut, the mint and the lemon ones. I have yet to try others that intrigued me. I liked the 50th anniversary moon landing ones but could only eat one or two at a time (I can normally eat 4 or 5 at a time because I'm a sweets person) because the cream tasted like the dehydrated marshmallows that come in cereal. But the cream was purple. I kept the package because it was neat. But I might throw it away at some point because that's starting to be hoarder behavior and I need to snuff that out before it's too late.
i like the regular oreo and the golden oreos but i hate the double stuff cause it seems like the cream tastes different in the double stuff like it just doesnt taste the same even when i take the cookie apart and eat the icing first.

Your mint oreo comment got me thinking: I wonder how an episode on "odd" food allergies would go. I am allergic to mint and it is actually really difficult to avoid in everyday life. Or there's the cilantro soap gene.
wow... i just don't like mint. MY food allergy is milk, so i know how hard things are to avoid. people put milk in practically everything these days, but the non-dairy market has expanded significantly compared to 20 years ago
I like this idea. My weird food allergy is watermelon, and with it becoming a more and more trendy flavor/scent, it is becoming harder and harder to avoid. There are even makeup brands including melon extract in their formulas now for its anti-aging qualities.
according to ancestry, i have that cilantro gene. however i fucking love cilantro so i think that a. ancestry is wrong, or b. maybe i like the taste of soap
the cilantro soap thing is horrible, the amount of food I cant eat from actual restaurants and recipes because they use cilantro...it really tastes like licking a bar of Irish Spring
I'm one of the weirdos that prefer the wafer part of the oreos. I actually found some chocolate wafer cookies that we sell at my work that are almost identical to the oreo wafer. So delicious.
Great *stuff*, Matpat! I would've considered freezing the cookie after splitting it to have the cream come off all together like a solid. I don't know if that would work to be fair.
I never understood separating the Oreos before eating them. It's like when people take off their favorite pizza toppings before eating a slice, so they enjoy them separately. Why do you do this? To me, it tastes way better combined.
For myself, most of the supermarkets in my country only have the original sizes so I would remove the cream of a few and stack them together to create the 'stuf' effect. As for why I do it, I don't know honestly it just seemed like a fun idea to have the flavour compounded.
The reason is to increase variation in taste. You can have each cookie with a different amount of frosting than the next, so more adventure rather than it all being the same.
Watching this episode while wolfing down Double Stuf Oreos 😅. Thanks for the Hydrox reference at the end. Blast from the past with better cookies but less awesome crème.
Huh, I wondered why I also seemed to prefer the Golden Double Stuff. I definitely prefer the vanilla cream, but actually getting the most of it through them was unexpected. I have never had the chance to buy the Mega or Most Stuff - I always built my own, and I even reached a personal record of 16x Stuff (it was extremely tedious to get every step needed to go right, so I have only succeeded in building it once).
That friggin drumroll made me laugh so hard. This is another reason why this is my favourite Theorists channel on the Tubes. LOVE the work, you guys. Keep it up (but don't make Mr. Mattypatty go mad too often. I worry.)

This episode left me with one extremely important question unanswered. What did MatPat do with all of the scraped off Oreo stuffing? Did he use it for good, or to create an eldritch abomination of cookie filling? "Theory Channel Theory: Was this video only created so MatPat the Gozerian could create a Mr. Double Stuf Oreo Cookie Man?"
I literally tested this myself last year by taking two normal Oreos, removing one of the cookies with only tiny spots left on the removed side, and put the two sides with cream together, and held it up next to a double stuffed Oreo, and it was the same size.
When I clicked, I was sure there was a local guy who covered this a decade ago during the blog days, so I was happy to see you bring his story up! Re: mint creme - you should check out Michelle the Oreohead. She has a theory about how the dyed creme has a strange texture due to the dye affecting it. It comes up a lot in the special edition flavors.
Also noticed that when it comes to local brand vs. Oreo, the local wafers tend to be bigger while the cream tends to be the same, in addition to having even easier separation on one side. It's really a pick and choose scenario over what ideal sandwich cookie you desire.
I love the fact you're on the couch doing this experiment, literally showing us your process before you explain it. It helps [at least me] understand how you did what you did. Also @ 8:52 you can see in the creme a little smile :) Also, The Vanilla Oreos are by far my favorite. I love the combo of the stuf & the vanilla flavour together. I wish they'd make like... a mega or double-double stuffed vanilla one. Thanks for covering this Mr. Pat! ♥

Most likely goblins and magic.
It's all goblins and magic.

Actually I read somewhere once that it's done with magical goblins
If you have a vacuum chamber, put the Oreos in the vacuum chamber and when you’re done you can separate the cream an cookie perfectly!
I think you can make an vacuum chamber at home but I don’t remember how to do it.
Get a chamber and fill it with vacuums.
... Probably not the kind of vacuum chamber you want, but still
Fun fact: the cream on most of the Oreo’s is just placed on to it and so it can be easily and fully removed just by your thumb
"I want that THICCness inside my body"
-MatPat 2022
I actually tend to keep them in the freezer in the summer. I can confirm the cream separates very cleanly when they're cold.
Wow.
The Action Lab recently did an experiment where they put an Oreo in a vacuum chamber and the cream came completely off
What if we just bought the wafers separately that oreo sells?
@@Jade-ki8un I feel like that wouldn't be accurate enough. There's no way to know for certain if those wafers are the exact same as the ones that make up the actual whole oreos or if they're made differently.

Freeze them
Works really well.
3 double stuffs wouldn't be octuple, it would be sextuple. (Also you spelt octuple wrong)
🧐
The lemon ones, for SURE the lemon ones. Those are really awesome. :)
i like the regular oreo and the golden oreos but i hate the double stuff cause it seems like the cream tastes different in the double stuff like it just doesnt taste the same even when i take the cookie apart and eat the icing first.

As for why I do it, I don't know honestly it just seemed like a fun idea to have the flavour compounded.
yep it does
I don't like the flavour of them combined. I do like the flavour of them seperate.
The reason is to increase variation in taste. You can have each cookie with a different amount of frosting than the next, so more adventure rather than it all being the same.
As a pepperoni pizza fan, I would never do that.

8:40 STOP EATING THE DATA, MATT!
I love the fact you're on the couch doing this experiment, literally showing us your process before you explain it. It helps [at least me] understand how you did what you did. Also @ 8:52 you can see in the creme a little smile :)
Also, The Vanilla Oreos are by far my favorite. I love the combo of the stuf & the vanilla flavour together. I wish they'd make like... a mega or double-double stuffed vanilla one. Thanks for covering this Mr. Pat! ♥
Ayo! The cookie is smiling! X-D
Mat's realization of what he said at the start is just gold almost makes me wanna 🤨📸
This is one of my favourite videos 😂😂😂
