Thanks a ton for this. While the Napoleon route is stunning as long as it's not foggy or rainy, for us older folks this route is definitely a good alternative and has great views as well. It's a different challenge to walk on pavement for so long and to watch out for cars the whole time, so both have their pros and cons.

Thank you for making this video. There's so little information available about the alternate route.
    It's beautiful!

Around 6:45 is where I encountered the angriest dog on the entire camino. He couldn't have been more than 10 lbs, but he really wanted me to know he was NOT HAPPY I was walking in front of his house. Even started following me a bit, barking like mad, until he gave up and turned back around. Great video and wonderful to relive that first magical day... when I was so full of excitement and hope and fear. Thanks! I'm looking forward to watching the rest of them.

Jen Gonyer-Donohue I think I ran into the same dog on my trip in 2015. Nasty barking little bundle of fur. But I guess it was his turf. Thanks for the comment.

If you stay in Valcarlos that first night, get the entry pass-code and a diagram where the municipal albergue is from the bar/restaurant on the left, almost at the end of town. Also there is a supermarket in town where you can buy food and drink.

This is a great route. It is actually an older way than the now more popular Napoleon way through Orrison. I prefer this route in many ways.
I also encountered the dog mentioned in other comments.😔

looks much easier than Napoleon. Do you think it better to go that way ..would you miss much other than main route? It's great if a person has trouble climbing

It’s easier but not there still are steep parts. But you are able to easily do it in two days). The scenery is better on the Napoleon, in my view. One other option for the main route would be to walk to Orisson, taxi back, and then the next day taxi to Orisson and walk the rest of the way. But, that said, the Valcarlos route is not as high and easier.

Is the path marked with the scallop shell?

David Kalinowski - Stage 1 is very well marked with the usual yellow arrows and many other signs along the way. Some communities use the scallop shell but most use yellow arrows or just plain directional signs.

@@johnsikora Thank You! I am heading out April 1 and it appears I may be taking this route due to weather. One never knows. I've been reviewing your documentary over the days prepa9myself for the walk. Thanks again😊
