  • I just returned from my Camino Francés. I wanted to post this video while things are still fresh in my mind. I don’t claim to be an expert in anything or know much, but I did learn a lot on this 500 mile trek.
In this video I share tips that worked for me, gear I used, helpful information for packing, from head to toe. This is what worked for me, what didn’t work good, and what I would have done different. I hope it helps you in some way on your pilgrimage. Much love Jeanee - Alaskan Pilgrim. Much love!
Ok! Here is the list of some of the brands and names of the gear that I used for my 500 mile trek across Spain.
My backpack - deuter SL Futura Pro 36L www.deuter.com/DE/en/hiking/f...
My boots - Kuru Chicane Boot www.kurufootwear.com/chicane-... (it looks like they aren't making the boot anymore, but this is the shoe style of it.)

    Day Pack - www.surfdome.us/osprey_backpa...
Belly/waist pack- The one I used I bought in France and can't find it online, but here is one similar. www.ebags.com/hproduct/outdoo...

    Hi Alaskan Pilgrim
On my first Camino the back pack was a lot heavier then this years, the one thing you realise is that you don’t need much in life.
Thanks for sharing your pack list, take care. Cheers Tony

Thank you for some really useful packing tips and advice. I will definitely take a large multi purpose scarf as you suggested, brilliant idea. I’m going this year roughly the same months you were out there so the advice about warmth was helpful too. Thank you again for all your great videos which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I did the final leg of the camino Frances in April which started from Sarria. I learned that most of the pilgrims would hang their wet clothes on their backpacks to dry. It didn't matter if it were T-shirts or underwear. You just have to be resourceful.

I have found the best combination for feet on long distance and rough terrain is injinji toe socks, with Silverlight socks over that and Altra shoes. The winning combo for no blisters and comfort.

That's my thought (looks more like a sales person) - make-up - she is actually promoting products, esp.considering all the stuff she has in the background: Maybe a hoarder, too?
Not a good sign for someone who actually hikes as minimally as possible, as most hikers do. ( Although, some have hiked using baggage forwarding services. And, while these people are subtle about the fact that they do use those forwarding services, they DO admit to using those services.)

Thank you for sharing your journey. It is wonderful to see what you did and what you saw and how you faced the difficulties as you transitioned across Spain. My young son just completed his journey with his wife from Sarria. Unfortunately I was not able to join them. But, as a very old Marine, I hope to be turning 82, next fall, and follow your footsteps as I journey from SJPdP. As you, I am training here in Florida with all of the summer heat. Just got my backpack from Moosejaw. What a marvelous piece of gear that is. Never saw so many straps on a backpack in my life. It WILL take me time to figure all of their uses, however the joy you clearly demonstrated on your own journey, is inspirational to this old but determined Marine. God bless you and your family. Did you use or need any of the following: Water container? Drinking cup? GoPro type camera? Any kind of knife? Sewing kit?
Did you have a selfie stick, or a bracket on your trekking pole? Would you take the trekking poles if you did it again?
Are most products we have in America available there? I know brands differ, but similar items? Did you see any ShoeGoo?

Hi tom! thanks so much for the kind words. Let's see, I only used a regular plastic Voss water bottle. I drank before bed, before my hiking began and at villages along the way, you can replenish your water as you go. I didn't use a go pro, didn't have a knife, or sewing kit. I had a selfie stick, I loved my trekking poles and couldn't have done it without them. they kept my rhythm, helped me up hills and down the hills. No, you can't get most products from America over there, but you can get similar items with a different name. You can get most everything on line. Hi kari, I didn't keep a written journal of my trip. I decided to journal, via these videos. Most of the time, I flew by the seat of my pants. Not making a reservation and seeing where serendipity drew me to. I never wrote down the names of the albergues. But in the Wise Pilgrim and John Brierley's books you will have a list of albergues in each village and city along with addresses, and phone numbers. If you are traveling at a heavily traffic time, around noon each day, you can call ahead to the village or town albergue that you want to stay at, and give them your name. They will hold a room for you. Hope that helps!

Can’t thank you enough for your post-Camino gear review-I always find these so helpful. But most of all, I loved hearing how your handled your tech gear! Hoping to make my Camino next year and I just know I will want to overpack all the camera stuff. Even thought about taking my gimbal, too, but after watching this I will probably leave it home. Did you use only your phone and a selfie stick/monopod, then? Also, I noticed you have a lav mic in your videos. Which did you use and what phone/camera did you use for your videos? Soooo sorry for all the questions-just trying to come up with a game plan that won’t leave me with a sore back and unused gear. Thank you for sharing your Camino wisdom!! 😊🙏

Hey, Mom on a mission! Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate that. I am so excited for you and your upcoming trek! So, I wanted to do it as easy and light as possible. The Zyun Gimble, is an amazing piece of equipment, but not for a long trek like the Camino. It's heavy, bulky and needs to be charged. To pull it out, hook it up, try and level the phone etc was just too much. I ended up using a basic selfie stick. I had a bluetooth pairing button, which I lost somewhere and even lost the stick somehow. I ended up using a bendable gorilla tripod, it worked, but was awkward. I did bring a Lavalier mic, but I had it in a pocket and washed it... Lol!, that's one of the reasons why the sound was off towards the end. I used only my iPhone 8 and edited in iMovie. Pack light. I heard that many times before I left and thought I did pack light. I didn't. It's truly a gift you're giving yourself and your body when you go minimal. It will be a more enjoyable experience for you in every way. I hope this helps you a bit! Buen Camino my friend xoxo

Thank you so much Paulo! Yes, I bought them at the sports store in the village of St. Jean. It was close to the pilgrims office. They had many different kinds and price ranges. I chose the nicest ones they had. Figuring it was worth it since I was going to use them for 500 miles. They were about $120. You can also get a pair for $20. But, what ever brand of sticks you choose, I think they will be great. They were a game changer for me for sure.

Can you tell me which Albergue had bedbugs? My husband (70) and I (65) will be leaving in March to walk the Camino Francés. I really don't want to deal with bedbugs if I can avoid it. Thank you for your video. It is very useful!! @alaskanpilgrim2099  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Veggin Out And About, I can't remember now, but even if I did, it probably wouldn't affect you because they would have cleaned the issue up. Several of the people in the pod I was traveling with had it happen at different Albergues. the best thing that you can do, is check the bed out completely before you get on it. Sleep in a silk sack/liner and don't put your pack on the bed. My whole back, butt, legs and feet had little bites that drove me almost insane, especially around the backpack belt, from rubbing. I went to a pharmacy and he looked at the bites and gave me medicine and then I washed everything and put heat on everything else. You should be fine, also, pilgrims talk and will let you know if an Albergue has an issue. Hope that helps! I'm excited for your journey!

    • @alaskanpilgrim2099
      @alaskanpilgrim2099  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Veggin Out And About, no, the showers in some places are separated, one for women and one for men, in a few that I went to, there were shower stalls men/women, private stalls with doors, but in the stall next to you would be a man showering.

Way, way, way too much stuff that you don't need. The main reason you had so many problems with your feet it's that you did not use the right shoes for you. "People" don't steal from you on the Camino. A small spry bottle of lavender oil, alcohol, and destilled water is the only thing you need to repell bed bugs. I've done the French Way 4 times on different months of the year and beleive me you do not need a lot of the stuff that you took, ie., your walking shoes and sandals, no more, pants with several pockets so you can get rid of the other 2 bags and so forth.
