  • The epic space battle above the moon of Endor. The Rebel Alliance gathers up its entire fleet of cruisers and fighters led by Lando Calrissian in the Millennium Falcon and overseen by Admiral Ackbar in the Mon Calamari Cruiser Home One to destroy the second Death Star. Unfortunately by the time they get to the "incomplete/nonoperational" Death Star the shield generator hasn't been disabled by the Rebel ground troops on Endor led by Han Solo. The fleet then encounters a fleet of star destroyers and countless TIE fighters. They soon find out the Death Star is operational as it fires its main laser and destroys the Mon Calamari Cruiser Liberty and an Unidentified MC80 Home One type Star Cruiser. Once the shield is down Lando and Wedge Antilles fly inside the Death Star and destroy the core. During the battle a few A-Wings take out the Super Star Destroyer Executor. Wedge and Lando take out the core and fly out as the second Death Star explodes as the Galactic Empire falls and the New Republic is born

Hats off for Lando Calrissian. This gentleman's actions saved the day:
    1. First to realize the empire was ambushing them, and the shield was still up. Called off the initial strike and saved the whole team.
    2. When things looked grim, he pushed to stay the course and trust that the rest of the team, namely Han Solo, would fulfil their duty.
    3. When the situation turned hopeless, Lando pushed to have everyone focus on the manageable goals - the star destroyers.
    4. When the gamble paid off, Lando immediately broke off and personally led the attack on the highest value target.
If Lando is not C-suite material, I don't know what is.

For those wondering, the only CGI element in this whole sequence was the pulse ring when the Death Star blows up, and that of course was added in the late 90s as part of the special edition re-releases. Every other shot is motion control bluescreen photography using miniatures, rotoscoping and optical printing. Simply incredible- and it still holds up so well today!

Can't believe that Wedge actually survived every single battle since episode IV and was the most that did the work, and yet he is underrated. A pilot instead of a Jedi or Sith, just a regular pilot, that is a lot of potential.

Actually, the rebel's fleet battle strategy during the war is impresive. Very risky, it's basically a "it's all or nothing" kind of strategy but it's executed perfectly. As they are caught by surprise by both the ambush, first, and the Death Star, second, the rebels go point blank against the imperial fleet so the Death Star can't have a clear shot, and at the same time they force the battle close to their main target and away from it at the same time, reversing the surprise and when the imperials are finally reorganized, they take down their Flagship. This entire scene is awesome in every way.

The rest of the crew is cheering as Admiral Ackbar slumps in his chair, recognizing the sacrifice of that A-Wing Pilot and possibly even the crew of the star destroyer as well. It's such a small sequence that didn't have to be in the movie, but it gives the world and even the minor characters so much more depth. "Engage those Star Destroyers at point-blank range!"
Under the circumstances that's a pretty sound strategy. They can't retreat because their escape route is blocked and they stand no chance against the Death Star as long as that shield is still up, so attacking the Imperial fleet head-on is pretty much the only option they have. Yes, they'll take heavy losses but so will the Imperials and it will also limit the Empire's ability to use the Death Star; either hold fire and let the Imperial fleet sustain huge casualties in a close-quarters engagment or keep firing and risk wiping out your own ships along with the Rebel cruisers. One of the main rules of war is that you always offer the enemy a way out, otherwise they'll be willing to pull all kinds of crazy shit just to gain a ghost of a chance at either survival or victory and that's one rule the Empire clearly didn't obey.

Two things I only just now thought about all these years later:
1 - Since the fleet is being jammed, they have no idea what's going on down on the moon. The way it's shown in the movie you kind of feel like everyone knows the deal, like the fleet just needs to hold on a little longer. But really they have no clue if their troops on the moon are even still alive. Kind of makes you realize how desperate this battle really is for the rebels.
2 - Once the shield is down, you realize that it doesn't take them long at all to destroy the Death Star. Makes me wonder how short the battle would have been had things gone according to plan.
I love the fact that even some 40 years later I'm still finding things about these movies I hadn't really considered or noticed before.

If my memory serves me, Ackbar's actor was instructed to jump off his seat and celebrate the destruction of the Executor, but the actor rejected this and decided on his own to portray Ackbar as someone who feels relief that they took out the Destroyer but also somewhat sad about the thousands of lives he is watching dive into the Death Star right into certain death.
The actor rejected to do a reshot of the scene with him celebrating like the rest so what ended up in the film was one of the most perfect improvisations that elevated a small character into a legend.
The Expanded Universe (RIP) took this and elaborated even more upon Ackbar's ambiguety on his reaction towards the death of such amount of Imperials.

One of my favorite moments was 4:02. It was a huge moment where they really risked it all. All the fleet knew was that the Death Star was invulnerable (shield), operational, and picking off their capital ships at will, and they had a massive star destroyer fleet cutting them off. ** It was only the trust Lando had in Han that allowed them to stay under incredible pressure that ultimately gave them the victory. Had they pulled out when the admiral wanted, the downed shield generator would have been a worthless gesture as the remnants of the rebel fleet would already have left the system. By the time they might have learned the Death Star's shields were down... another shield would have been raised and with overwhelming power. Its likely the fleet in orbit would have bombarded the surface and wiped out any ewoks within 1000 miles. They could have transported a crew with a crude but effective shield until a larger one was made. Lando's faith in his friend was absolute and it was ultimately justified.
