I tuned into this video particularly to see if Wes Montgomery showed up in it. He does. Who in 1949 would have imagined the young man playing guitar in Hampton's orchestra would go on to become the world's finest and most original jazz guitarist?

Good catch. His characteristic thumb picking is very clearly shown.

Edie Lang and Charlie Christian and Grant Green are jazz guitarist that have been written out of history! Wes gained popularity through its style of octaves and a style that has out lasted its usefulness and makes too much jazz guitarists sound just alike!

@@haywardmccullough2762 Eddie Lang and Charlie Christian certainly haven’t been written out of jazz history. Grant Green was under appreciated during his lifetime but is now widely celebrated.

The showmanship of Hampton and his band is incredible! I assume these clips were produced for "shorts" at movie theaters. Their live shows in small venues must've been amazing!

I remember seeing him the 70's when my parents "dragged" me to his shows during the summer outdoor events. I am thankful they did as watching this has borought back many memories of his great music. I now play it here for friends in my bar and enjoy having the young folks appreciate it n this day. Just takes a few songs and they are hooked to the greatness of this type music and what it meant to America at the time.

What a band and Hampton's vibes. Thank you for posting this treasure.

Oh, Lord, what a show! I just came here to see young Betty Carter (evidently Hampton fired her 7 times in about 2 years -- she had a mind of her own) but this whole show is incredible and I have only seen some snippets of it so far. Hampton doin a million things, Wes Montgomery, Curly Hamner, Sonny Parker and Betty Carter, and those two tiny kids!!
