Podcast celebrating the Mr C label from the UK, run by the legendary Mr Johnny "Chester" Dowling
มุมมอง 1402 ปีที่แล้ว
Briefly in operation during the early 1980s during the rockabilly revival, Chester's Mr C label issued 45s by homegrown talent as well as reissues of original 1950s US rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues tracks. "Shreveport Sam" is Chester, himself on vocal and piano on several of the tracks. The track-listing includes: Cats Nite Out - The Hi Tones featuring Bob "Mr Nice Guy" Solly (C00B) Rock '...

Backed here by drummer James "Osie" Johnson's "orchestra" (actually just a sax, piano, guitar, bass and drums), these Majors seem to be related to the earlier group of that name that recorded for Derby in 1951.

Bill Carlisle was a very close friend of Martha’s too and after her divorce from her first husband she joined up with the Carlisle’s for a spell in 1951. Salty Holmes also another talented musician was married to Martha’s sister Jean “ Mattie” who teamed with Salty and they billed themselves as Salty and Mattie. Lots of family history in country and gospel music.

I remember seeing him the 70's when my parents "dragged" me to his shows during the summer outdoor events. I am thankful they did as watching this has borought back many memories of his great music. I now play it here for friends in my bar and enjoy having the young folks appreciate it n this day. Just takes a few songs and they are hooked to the greatness of this type music and what it meant to America at the time.

Listening to Tooter Boatman's "Thunder And Lightning" for the first time, was like discovering a Pharoah's tomb, according to Piers. Handing over 200 quid to Major Bill Smith, at a London hotel for the 'Twinkle' tapes was a lot of money back then, but says it was worth every penny. He and Trevor were RNR Pioneers in the Indiana Jones spirit, and I'm so pleased there's finally a podcast dedicated to the pair of them. It's criminal that no documentary has ever been made about this subject. Would make great TV, especially the bit where 'Swansong' wanted to licence the Injun label. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page really did dig no nonsense rockabilly and still do, and would have had the influence and money to push the product. Who knows, "Bop Crazy Baby" could have been a top ten record!
