    My favorite thing in the aquarium hobby is, depending on who you ask, you'll always get a different answer. Clean your glass, don't clean your glass. Snails are great! Snails are Satan incarnate. You don't need co2 for live plants, co2 is absolutely necessary.
    But what we can all agree on, SpongeBob doesn't belong in our aquascaping.

      @@Pennysfishkeeping LOLZ, I just want to encourage little ones to be responsible fish loving aquarium keepers. It's so awesome that the hobby is so easy to learn about now. I have tried to keep fish and invertebrates since I was young. I wish all children had the opportunity. If it takes a Nickelodeon cartoon to encourage that lifelong love, so be it.

      I have a blue semi coiled dragon at the entrance of a cave. But the planting is so heavy (now that it has all grown) it's very difficult to see. Very occasionally someone will spot it. The rest of my 4ft long is naturally decorated. As too are my other tanks. But I wouldn't want to not have it in there. Originally got it to encourage the offspring over 20yrs ago. 🤣

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tbh the way I see it is, artificial decor can be ok if it only takes up a small amount of your fish's swimming space. CO2 though... The answer really depends because there are some high tech, mainly carpeting plants, that do require CO2 to thrive but there's also plenty of low tech plants if that is your aim. It's kinda just, pick whatever you're comfortable with and build a tank around that. "Pest" snails though... Again, depends on who you ask and their tank keeping style, I'm one of some people that actually purposely keep pest snails as biological indicators since the health of their shell is a great way to check nutrient levels in a tank and their population density is a great way to check how much you're feeding your tank, since many freshwater snails are very slow compared to your fish and will starve if you only feed the perfect amount to fill your wanted bellies and not unwanted bellies. Hearing all the different answers is fun though, like I'm partial to low tech, low flow, no water change tanks and do well with multiple species of both plant and animal, then others swear by giant expensive canister filters for just about any sized tank and hey, there's a ton of factors that go into keeping a successful tank, starting with the owner's knowledge level, so I say do what works for you but don't be afraid to experiment a bit and listen to others' experience, and share what works for you as well, we're all constantly learning in this hobby and that's what makes it so fun and rewarding

    I really like neon tetras. Bright blue with a pop of red. I have 16 or 18 of them in a planted 75 gallon with habrosus cories, harlequin rasboras, cherry shrimp, a hillstream loach, 3 otos and khuli loaches. In my opinion the tetras are the prettiest fish in that tank. And because they are so cheap you can get a lot of them and they are even prettier swimming together among the plants. I hardly see the rasboras as they stay at the top which means bending over to see them. The tank is in an inconvenient spot for pulling up a chair lol.

    Great advices. I used one species for several years with the correct plants and clean up crew (I have to say one of my friends is a marine biologist so I had a bit of advice to get the right combination.)Then I started to add a few other species to it which were compatible. For the second tank I did a lot of research and combined several different compatible species with my Betta.And yes I put him in a larger tank with a lot of plants and compatible schooling fish and a clean up crew and he seems a lot happier in there than in the smaller tank.He loves exploring.The filter flow can easily be adjusted in a larger tank or in my case I bought large sponge filters.

    Gravel (inert) by itself is amazing! Every bit of nutrient goes straight to the roots.
    It's like having a tank full of floating plants.
    I used to laugh at gravel users, because I was a sand/dirted tank user. I was so wrong. Dont get me wrong sand (with our without dirt) works well.
    But gravel took away all maintenance I had. Its like having a substrate top to bottom helping convert ammonia because the water reaches through the entire substrate.
    What I also do with gravel is hide my heater in it. At worst you will only see a black wire sticking out of the gravel.
    Gravel > Sand > sand with dirt (creates a mess during rebuilds)
    Full disclosure: The first few weeks I use liquid fertilizer with the gravel setup, but the good part is the liquid reaches all parts of tank because it's not capped with sand. All plants thrive. After a while no need to fertilize. Just feed your fish well and balanced diets. The broken down nutrients will feed your plants

      Good luck! Also, a tip from someone who's made this mistake: expect to wait a month before getting any shrimp, they actually want you to give the tank time for algae to set in and the system to settle before adding them since shrimp can be pretty sensitive to changes and will graze constantly on algae if allowed, which means less risk of starvation if you can't feed them 2-4 times a day and can only do 1-2 times. Also definitely make sure you pick a species and test your water parameters to match that species, it should make acclimation easier. I hope that tank does great, shrimp are adorable and you can even add in a few small snails after a bit to add some variety ^^

    That’s so cool, I got the same brand lights as you mentioned several years ago off Amazon because they seemed like a good deal and bright enough for my plants at the time, it’s definitely bright enough to grow enough algae for my algae eating animals that I barely have to add extra Auphwuchs substitute food because they have a buffet of living green surfaces to graze on and the bloodworms for my other fish and the leaves and wood gets enough nutrients into the water to keep it growing well indefinitely as long as I keep an eye on my water parameters and it seems to be working well so far and since my dream setup includes a bunch of different kinds of algae and aufwuchs eating fish and invertebrates from higher tannin environments in a much larger aquarium I am practicing for that eventuality by keeping my current small tank as if I already had them with the surfaces green and the water clear with lots of tannins because that’s good for my current small number of neo shrimp and for my betta as well. Sorry I can’t remember how to spell some words today and the autocorrect isn’t helping much because I’m not misspelling common English words.

    Dirted tanks are where it's at, learn balance, ride the wave of only having to feed a tank and top off with RODI water twice a week, you can just keep a bucket of water setting with a couple well season plants floating in it, ready for top offs at all times. Don't adjust parameters until 3+ hours after you top off, I always wait to do my tests the following day. Adjust if necessary and only with the water at or above the full line, on mine I consider anything being obscured by the black rim as full. My care schedule means I only spend 5-15 minutes per day working on fish depending on the day of the week, and I get to spend 10 times that just looking at and enjoying them. The profit margin on effort:enjoyment is very very wide with a well-planned dirted tank.

    Should I get some white clouds for my 9 gallon Fluval flex to accompany my betta?

    • @nigga12665
      @nigga12665 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wont add any other fish which swim at thr top or middle of the tank with my betta in a 9 gallon. You can add bottom dwellers like kuhuli loaches or Cory fish. Adding amano shrimp and snails is a must tho.

    I would love tips for tanks that use just gravel and plants that grow on rocks and wood instead of inside substrate. Liquid fertilizer has been helpful but any tips for a somewhat beginner would be awesome

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had much luck growing plants in gravel ngl, though woodscape being an option, anubias and java fern both are good options for lower light options that you can attach directly to your hardscape. They don't like to be buried but if you don't mind a little more messy start, just dropping java fern in on top of gravel also works, though I get that not everyone likes the mangrove tree look you get because they often root elevated off the substrate a bit, though if shrimp, nano fish or fish fry are what you want... It does make a great natural hide at least. You've also got multiple floating plant options depending on availability in your area and your filter- especially duckweed tends to clog up and stop your standard HOB (hang on back) filter so that could be a factor. Another option is, of course, an aquatic moss like java moss or chrismas moss. I've got both of them but I know other options exist. Moss will grow on just about anything and just about anywhere so it can be a nice hardscape decor when kept in check with trimming, or an unusual carpet choice on top of the substrate but do your own research before spending money on moss, it can be a hassle to get rid of and it can get messy fast, so not exactly the best choice for anyone going for a cleaner look or lacking the time to keep an eye on it
      Also I'm sure there's other options, aside from one low effort option to just treat an easy to keep stem plant as a floater, or optionally, actually plant it but stem plants can get very long if not trimmed and you probably want to float and wait for root growth before planting as they have a habit of melting and uprooting when planted otherwise. Other options might be something like a lotus or a banana plant, more bulb type plants that don't all like being buried. Also some carpeting type plants might be just fine with gravel, but some species I've yet to keep alive without CO2 so look up care requirements first ^^'
      Hopefully this helps at all or at least gives you a decent starting point to do your own research on what will hopefully fit your needs and tastes both

    nice vid, tto get rid of the biofilm on the surface i use one sheet of the newspaper, lay it on the water surface and drag it towards you lifting it this way you will remove all from the surface in one go. It is a 2 minute job done and all is clean on the surface.

    • @notfundy240
      @notfundy240 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I personally wedge their rhizomes between pieces of hardscape until they root down. You could also use cyanoacrylate glue to glue part of the rhizome to the hardscape, wait for the glue to dry before you put it in the water though.

      Wedge them into your hardscape or use a small stone to weigh them down until they root, though tieing them to hardscape is also an option. Glue though, I haven't personally tried but it seems like others have had success with using the right kind

      @@brickosaurus2276 I've used rubber bands before, though I think most people's go to is a thin fishing line that can be hidden. Fishing line does need to eventually be cut and removed though but rubber bands disintegrate after a while and afaik that hasn't caused me any trouble, though in the future I'd probably use a different material then either, like maybe sewing thread as that should break down after a while but idk about fishing line personally. It probably doesn't hurt to forget about it though since idk how many people that use it actually take it out when it's done its job, so it might be worth your time to check it out before you decide. I think though that anything thin and non toxic should be fine if it works, then it's more a question of how well it can be hidden if seeing it is gonna bother you

    lol and here i am .. with too many plants in my tank wich has actually only a ,,cheap,, kinda light .. it was in the set included and even i wanted to change it, i never did tho.. in the very first beginning i needed some fertilizier but cause i didnt have any living fish or so in there and my substrade was kinda dead xD .. now i even have some big floater plants but my plants in the tank go crazy x.x my actuall biggest and kinda only problem are these big amount of snails.. got them somehow when i bought some plants and now i cant get rid of them .. annoying biests
    have black sand in my tank and i did take some rocks from my garden .. did cook them, wash and let them soak with testing if it would affect my water quality bad.. but all fine :D
    and my tank is getting around 3 hours of sunlight the day.. but its actally really handy, cause the plants in the corner where it hits, dont get so much from above caused from the floaters. so perfectly fine and no algys - thanks to my little shrimps ^^
