Chennai is one of the safest cities with well connected and cheap transport, good educational institutions, good street food, some over enthusiastic helpful common folks, acceptable cleanliness, capable traffic-congestion-handling personnel, good electricity and decent water supply. All it needs to improve is Auto richshaw pricing and more friendly bus conductors (but I guess this is same in many cities)
thiruvetti Chennai climate sucks and water is too bad. not much cleaner and almost no trees. but rest r accetable like it is less polluted less traffic and friendly ppl etc. And also now it is not cheaper at all.
Arjun Manchala I think Chennai climate is overhyped. As an ex Mumbaikar I can vouch that Mumbai is far more sultry than Chennai. Hyderabad is also hotter than Chennai. Chennai, as per weather sites, has become a little cooler in the last 2 years. Chennai is hot -True. But not the hottest among popular cities as media hype suggest ;-) Chennai city doesnt have that much water issues as other part of TN.

As a person who actually lived in ALL the metro cities in India, I think I would be able to offer a better perspective. Listing the cities in no particular order with pros and cons. 1. Mumbai- Pros: Safety, very accommodating and polite residents. Always ready to help. Financial capital with plenty of opportunities. Also entertainment capital of India. Good public transport option. Cons- The cost of living is obnoxiously high. The bustle of the city might not be for every one. Food is not great. I'm sorry but had to put that out. 2. Delhi- Pros: one of the best food. 'The Best' as far as infrastructure is concerned ( because Capital). Plenty of opportunities. Relatively low cost of living. Cons- it's called the rape capital. Arguably the worst crowd(my experience) 3. Kolkata- The cultural capital. One of the best food ( probably the best), extremely diverse cuisine. The least expensive metro, cheaper than some non- metros. Best and most pocket friendly public transport options. The narrow road description is not accurate as it's probably less than 5% of Kolkata. And the Bengalies are generally very polite and well behaved. Cons- Lack of opportunities is the biggest issue here. They call it the dying city and not hard to understand why. The extream richness of the culture has diluted lately due to massive brain drain. 4. Bangalore- Currently residing. pros: The climate and the opportunities are hands down the biggest pros. The city of gardens is the greenest of all the metros. If you like pubs, Bangalore is your city. Cons- Worst traffic. Some roads are aweful. Very high cost of living. Worst public transport options. Hopefully metro will improve the situation. Water crisis is a thing 5. Chennai- Pros- The heritage! Again very rich culture. Very affordable city with great opportunities. Good public transport options. Cons- The climate is extreme. Not suitable for many. Cuisine is also not very diverse. I've seen racial discrimination towards outsiders. Can be orthodox. I was here during the Chennai flood of 2015. City also facing water crisis. 6. Hyderabad- Pros-Fastest growing city and well balanced. The cost of living is not high and there are plenty of opportunities. The best food in southern India. Helpful locals. Good options for public transport. Cons- Water crisis can be a threat.
Being born and brought up in tamilnadu i visited many places and lived in some cities out of tamilnadu.among them i feel Hyderabad is the best.Barring some islamic fundamentalists & pseudo secularists overall hyderabad is beautiful,cost-effective,economical,advanced city with almost all facilities of a big metro city.LOVE HYDERABAD @ BHAGYA NAGAR.
Chennai is most dirtiest cit...Look at area near railway sation, there is a big gutter flowing through the city, which I was told is a river!!!!! Paris bus station....yuck.......Koyambedu bus staiton another shithole... These r all facts and from some prejudice.....Comparatively look at Bengaluru and other K'taka cities like Mysore, Mangalore , Hubli and Belgaum....they r much cleaner than any other Indian cities.....Karnataka rocks
Hyderabad is the best city with most tolerant people, good education facilities, good Healthcare Facilities, Grand bazaars and Grand Malls and many more, nearly every community was able to thrive in Hyderabad like Parsis, Marwadis, Gujratis, Punjabis, Marathis, Tamils, Malyalis, and many such communities have been able to thrive in Hyderabad and each of them added their flavour to the city, it's the true melting pot, great crossroad of cultures and mini India, proud to be a Hyderabadi.
I have lived in some cities of India..... Delhi,Mumbai,Chennai,Banglore,Hyderabad,Bhubaneswar and Kolkata.... I liked Banglore for the climate. But I have to say my fav is HYDERABAD :) I love Hyderabad,Its my top most fav city in India... Food and the people makes Hyderabad a wonderful city to live.

Have lived/been to many cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyd, Kolkata etc but I just dont know there's something about Ahmedabad that makes me happy (except the weather and traffic), feel safe when i or my family members r out late at night, ease of living life, facilities that all other metros have, etc.. I was born and brought up in Jaipur but its Ahmedabad that I love and made my home.. Thanks. ☺☺

But not the hottest among popular cities as media hype suggest ;-)

As a person who actually lived in ALL the metro cities in India, I think I would be able to offer a better perspective. Listing the cities in no particular order with pros and cons.
1. Mumbai-
Pros: Safety, very accommodating and polite residents. Always ready to help. Financial capital with plenty of opportunities. Also entertainment capital of India. Good public transport option.
Cons- The cost of living is obnoxiously high.
The bustle of the city might not be for every one.
Food is not great. I'm sorry but had to put that out.
2. Delhi-
Pros: one of the best food. 'The Best' as far as infrastructure is concerned ( because Capital). Plenty of opportunities. Relatively low cost of living.
Cons- it's called the rape capital. Arguably the worst crowd(my experience)
Water crisis is a thing
5. Chennai-
Pros- The heritage!
6. Hyderabad-
Pros-Fastest growing city and well balanced. The cost of living is not high and there are plenty of opportunities. The best food in southern India. Helpful locals. Good options for public transport.
Cons- Water crisis can be a threat.
I'm from Delhi I think Chennai is better than delhi
Because Delhi is most polluted city in India.
@Halpha Bet yes . It is one of the developed cities. But one disadvantage that is pollution.
