I will always love the 5D Mark II . I bought it (for video) right before they updated the firmware that allowed manual exposure for video( maybe 10 years ago?) Once the firmware was released, the floodgates of creativity opened up! This camera reignited my passion for video production when it was released. I remember almost loosing a good gig because I showed up with a photo camera to a video shoot! 😅. The producers freaked out on me . Then they saw the footage and their mouths dropped! On that same project, the editors at the network called me wanting to know what camera did I use, because they were blown away by the look of the footage they were working with. Tough camera too! I traveled the world shooting different projects in very challenging environmental conditions. I may buy another and play around with the ML software. Thanks for sharing!
I think the 5.6K raw is only limited to 3.8fps is because of the slow compact flash slot on the camera. If I remember it correctly, the compact flash card slot on 5D mark iii is only 100MB/s and SD card slot is 80MB/s, but I am also trying to install this magic lantern on (my dad's) 5D mark iii though and compare the image to my own ZCAM E2-F6, very exited to see the results.
Wow.. thanks for making this video, two weeks ago I just boxed up my 5d2 to get it ready to sell because I was done with it after 12 years... it's still sitting in my garage and I think you just made it an easier sell.
Details like max frame rate and resolution that can be achieved should be included. It is quintessential and few footage from either side of the band will be much more informative.
Yes Armando! the 5D2 was my first ever camera that got me into filmmaking! It's the absolute bare bones of pro camera today. I still use one as a back up and for personal projects
I remember checking out ML when I was upgrading from my 5DIII a few years ago. At that time I just didn't want to pull the trigger and risk potentially bricking my ONLY camera - but given that a 5DII is only $500... 🤔 Thanks for the inspiration, man!
I remember when this RAW capability with ML came out back in 2013, back then i was a broke film student and could only afford a 50$ card that could do 1920x880 RAW and the camera got so damn hot lol. Still got my 5d mkII..feeling like trying this out again now that memory cards are faster and affordable. Not enough people knew about this!!
It was an exciting time! It catapulted a lot of us into large sensor cinematography. It was finally affordable and accessible. Philip Bloom was our guide . I remember when I would email him for gear advice and get a response in about an hour. Yup, a different time.
I remember in 2009 my neighbor was a very successful photographer and I remember him scrolling through pictures and a video popped up and I was like wtf you shot that with this!? I had never seen someone shoot video that had shallow depth of field, and this guy didn't really shoot video he was just messing around with his 5D2. It really did change everything, being able to get the cinema look for $2500 was just unheard of. I had a Canon Vixia at the time that I thought was cool and got rid of it for a T2i right away and got a 5DII a few months later.
I believe this cam didn't have 24 fps when it was released. It came via firmware a little later. We shot a lot of jobs with the Rebel T2i and the 5d Mark II back in the days. Haven't used raw with this cam yet
Armando, Great video! I’ve owned a 5D Mark II since 2010 and I wanna use it as a B camera again, but last I checked (like a month ago) magic lantern raw DIDN’T support 1920x1080 or greater at 24p. Has something recently changed? Can you share what frame rates and raster sizes you’re capturing for full motion video? The captions in your video state 5.6 K or 2.7 K but there’s no indication as to what the frame rate is. THX!
It's June 2020 and just bought a 2nd hand 5Dii, like brand new only 7k clicks (2nd hand prices are now fabulous ... great value for money). I have tested it for a few weeks under various conditions such as low-light/sun/rain/indoors/outdoors etc and the 5DMK2 this a VERY capable camera in the right hands. I'm mainly a stills-image shooter who shot for around 25 years (pre-digital as well) and I have very little interest in video, so I'm looking forward to use it for many years to come and even use it for some paid jobs. I'm not shooting sports and don't need exceptional crazy frame rates. Auto focus is good enough if you use the center spot only and I also find RAW files up to ISO 3200 to be good enough to sell to wedding clients if you use good lenses (might need a SLIGHT noise reduction in Lightroom on a few occasions). Normally its only photographers who pixel-peep, clients are more focused on moments and emotions instead of technicality. Also, try to put some outside perspective into our consumer society where we are tricked into getting new gear/upgrades all the time. It was not that long ago Professionals used EOS-D1 for their corporate work and created fantastic images displayed on large billboards. The list-price for D1 on release was around 6500 Dollars even though the resolution was a meagre 4 MegaPixel only, but still photographers managed to generate fantastic photos on such small resolution. Some of the best + most historical images we seen are pre-digital, taken using a camera which literally was a box with a piece of glass in the front without any technology. Today people are buying cameras that are more powerful than the computer that took humanity to the moon in the 1960s... AND they cost as much as a second-hand car!!!! Even so, we often still see generic photos that could have been taken with any consumer camera. So looks like we don't need better more expensive gear, we need better photographers ... we have become so lazy with too much "auto" expectations.
Gerald Undone shared your channel and wow... that's nice! Already happy to have found your channel. And this video was great... really helpful due to keeping things inside the budget. ))) Thank you ! )))

I have a 5D mark II that I bought to record RAW footage with. This video explained a lot of the pluses but there are some technical problems you might have to work through before you dial in your process and more limitations than were mentioned here. And one big limitation is heat. If you are inside and are consistently recording takes in RAW, the camera will heat up in only a couple of minutes and you will need some time to let it cool. Out side on a cold day should be fine. But if its hot out you will get the same problem. The file size also caps out at 4GB before the recording will just stop. This only gives about a minute of footage per take. This is a good camera for B roll. Don't think people are shooting full projects using raw on this camera without a LOT of peripheral support.
That camera changed the video world for ever. We were still talking about ground glass just days before. Now interchangeable lenses are a given thanks to it.

Do you know if the M.L. hacks it to where the screen can stay on indefinitely? Thank you!
Fantastic video!! You explained Magic Lantern better than most TH-cam videos have and made it seem very approachable, which many TH-cam videos fails to do.

You love canon because they held back on these features, most likely on a lot of expensive cameras that could've been included in too? Canon has been ripping people off for years. You love magic lantern, without them you have a good camera but not great. (it was great at its release). I applaud magic lantern since they probably helped pave the way for a lot of affordable cinema quality items we see on the market today. The 5d MKII was about $3000 when it came out and when you look at the video codec it recorded in natively it was god awful (granted it was designed for still and it is still amazing at that. Canon had very little to do with something like this. Also he should be stating the recording times, dropped frame issues, and frame rate limitations at resolutions. For about the same price you can just get an old BMPC 4k, BMCC 2.5k, BMMCC 4K (which shoots 4k 60p), or even the og bmpcc (1080p raw which looks amazing and even looks amazing when superscaled). All of which have no problems recording. This thing will have major limitations on the old compact flash 1.0.
Bought this as my first "pro" camera in 2017. Once I updated the firmware it was a beast, and the difference between this and the mark iv isn't as wide of a gap as you'd think. Glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves
Hollywood shot movies with a 5d mark II. the problem is that they use 20k lens and other tens or hundreds K of equipment plus a complete team of professionals and a complete set a professional post production team with good equipment and good actors and good sound recording. The final result is made by many things. I don't think it's realistic to say that me and my 5d can make the same stuff Hollywood does with its 5d. Besides this art doesn't rely on the resolution, real cinema is free from the 4k addiction. Resolution to me is just something you are forced to upgrade for the market and the consumerism. All this hanger for resolution makes me feel there will be everyday less contents, less to say. I hope this addiction will finish
i currently own Canon t7i, been using that for past year. i think i’m ready for a upgrade. i would like to go for mirrorless camera, which one will be ideal for me. $750-$1200 would be my buget. any suggestion guys ? i prefer sony or canon
Great video! You need to be extremely careful with magic lantern. I destroyed one of my 5dmkii by shutting off the camera during operation. Handle magic lantern with extreme care.
Please talk about sony nex vg 900. Is it still relevant today as a fullframe camcorder?? If yes then it would be perfect for me for its size and money😊😊
Only reason i switched from mk2 to mk4 was dualpixel AF and 60p. I have to say that if you dont do video then cameras havent had any significant improvments from the 5dmk2. you can get just as good pictures with a mk2 than any other camera on the market today
That's why I've just bought it. If it was capable of shooting amazing pictures 14 years ago, then it's still able to do it now. Also the resolution is still high by modern standards.
Thanks so much! We are working very hard to make that happen! In fact we are working on a whole new platform with improvements and more features as well as both IOS and Android APPs. All coming later this year! 🤘😎

Such a rad video Armando! Crazy to see old tech with new software perform so well. Wish the same developers could go work at Adobe and help them speed up their software lol. Thanks for sharing bro!
Would be good to see this review of other mid tier DSLRs with Magic Lantern to get a feel for what is most viable. I'm sure the age of some of these cameras directly effects the potential framerate and resolution you can get.
Great video! I love my 5D MK II. Even though it mostly just sits there as the backup to my backup I can't bring myself to selling it. I'll haven't loaded ML on it for years so looking forward to dropping the latest version and having a play this weekend. Thanks again
I doubt you'll see any higher frame rates than that. It's not really an issue of firmware allowing it. It's the recording media interface. Compact flash 1.0 is not fast enough.
5d2 was my first full frame camera from the t1i and that thing was a beast and it's crazy that it still is after a decade. This means that our cameras now have so much more potential with better software. If only magic lantern could hack the eos R
Magic lantern will not give 5k 24fps movie mode because the sensor readout is really-really slow. But this it is a great option for timelapses, if you can buy a card large enough
Put it on my 70D the day the first nightly build went live. I liked somethings, but for what I do, the work around's I did just worked better for me. Intervelometer is nice, but I prefer the corded one I bought on Amazon. Canon crippled that firmware so well that it took so long for the Beta to go live I've bought new cheaper gear that does better for me. It's certainly neat, but I don't think it will ever be as good as any of the main builds unless a dev gets a bug in their bonnet. Try out the newest update and it may be just super for you. Night timelapse, JJC intervelometer from Amazon and you wont have to touch the camera.

I’ve been using my Canon 5D MKIII for live-streaming and my hack is to start it recording for 30 minutes and then the screen stays on for another 30 minutes after that, but if I don’t start another clip before that hour is up, the camera clicks over to black. Do you know if the M.L. hacks it to where the screen can stay on indefinitely? Thank you!
What’s the crop factor like when using full HD and the 14Bit?
And are there any restrictions on record time?
Cant believe this was used on House. Amazing show with an amazing camera.
Fantastic video!! You explained Magic Lantern better than most TH-cam videos have and made it seem very approachable, which many TH-cam videos fails to do.
Love this Armando , I have been tinkering with the 5d a while back, Unfortunately mine decided to die already, but I’m sure the latest ML is even better , man wish mine still works! Great stuff bro 👍
Been using MagicLantern software for years now. Love it !!
Any tips and heads ups??
Will it brick your camera?
Wow. I can't believe the image quality and dynamic range coming out of such an old camera. That price is crazy too. Great video!
Great Video.. I am planning to Save up for.. Canon R5c.. but Lately i have been looking at the... Canon 5D mark 3... with Magic Lantern....
I want to work with Both.. Photo And Video.. that is why I want Canon R5c...
but... Canon 5D Mark 3 with Magic Lantern.. .IS AN INCREDIBLE OPTION...
Loved this one. Would love More videos on magic lantern. Saludos desde Argentina Armando!
Honestly this is a great option for those with a lower budget that still want their footage to be competitive on the market right now, great video!
I knew keeping my 5dmii in storage would be a nice time capsule. Always knew about ML but never used it. Will definitely be diving into it soon.
I love those lenses 😎 Great vid!! Freakin love ML!
6'12": sickness of owning a touch screen camera. Hey Armando!
On TH-cam you can type timestamps like 6:12 which will make them clickable.
Wow! Very nice!
What if you want to use it with the ninja V? The ninja can read the raw output, or it's all happening just internally? Have you tried?
Was about to buy this camera, thanks a lot for the tip !!!
Dope video bro. Can you name the season and episode HOUSE used the 5d?
Magic Lantern has been around for YEARS. I totally forgot about it 🤣
Do you think if I got the 5D Mark III I would get a even better performance?
Yes
it 100 does, you can shoot 3.2k raw at 24fps and it looks good
@@nicholasboule5134 do you know how manny minutes of 3.2k raw can you get?
@@merodack3721 it depends on the media card you use
That’s why I love Canon ❤️
@@mrwashur1991 bruh...
I’m a Sony head. But I admit, this is pretty awesome. Kinda want to buy a Canon 5D now lol
@@aguynamedatidade yes?
You know you’re having a bad day when you manage to void your warranty and have a seizure all in the one video!
aint no warranties left from a camera produced in 2012 haha
CineBlogs If that’s the case I’ll settle for the seizure
Technically shouldn't void your warranty since the hacked firmware only lives on your memory card and doesn't actually change anything in the camera.
@@JIYkp False. ML overrides the camera firmware and then runs from the card. It absolutely can damage your camera.
Loved the video, makes me want to shoot RAW!
How much continuous recording time can you get in raw with the 5D M2 at 5k? Also, any problems with an external monitor?
This was a very entertaining and informative video! Dropping a comment to help the algorithm!
Awesome video! Love my 5D MkII and learning my way around ML and MLV app.
Bought this as my first "pro" camera in 2017. Once I updated the firmware it was a beast, and the difference between this and the mark iv isn't as wide of a gap as you'd think. Glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves
The camera that started my career 🙏🏻👌🏻
I didn’t watch the video, but I can tell he was talking about Magic Lantern, an elder firmware my grandpa was using back in the days
This is hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Does the 5D Mark III have this feature also?
I have a 6D. Checking this out now!
I have been using this software for like 6 month now and its getting better
😍😍😍😍😍😍 Amazing! I still have the canon 5d Mark II, I'm going to try this!
Hi how much can you sell your 5D mark ii. I'm Frank from Uganda in East Africa.
@@snapshotmediagroupuganda9105 Hi, I'm not selling it. Sorry
Great video. Lots of good info. Love your video lights, but the white glob in the background is quite distracting.
Great video! You need to be extremely careful with magic lantern. I destroyed one of my 5dmkii by shutting off the camera during operation. Handle magic lantern with extreme care.
Love my 5D!! It STAYS in my bag along with my M50, EOS RP
I just sold my APS-C and I'm getting a 5d mk2 for $350 with only 20k shots 😲
Just bought 5d MK III for 600€ and only 60k shots on it.
I got one :D, still the most pleasing colors out of any canon cameras >.>
Please talk about sony nex vg 900. Is it still relevant today as a fullframe camcorder?? If yes then it would be perfect for me for its size and money😊😊
This camera changed my life
Yes your video hit nail on the head ....can you use atomos v to record raw video also ? Please let me know....Thanks
Can i use this in T6i ?? Or 1300D ?😲
Wooow! That footage! I have the eosr and it doesn’t look as gorgeous! I am jealous!
So excited for Gear Focus to become the standard!
Thanks so much! We are working very hard to make that happen! In fact we are working on a whole new platform with improvements and more features as well as both IOS and Android APPs. All coming later this year! 🤘😎
Gear Focus do you operate in the U.K.?
Jimi Can Read Yes! We are currently open to several countries and adding more regularly. FYI, It is up to sellers where they are willing to ship to for each listing. Hope to see you join.
Armando could you make us video about Magic Lantern and the process! Thanks
There’s ton already on TH-cam
@@mondobytes You know I'm a big fan of your videos, but is alright
Such a rad video Armando! Crazy to see old tech with new software perform so well. Wish the same developers could go work at Adobe and help them speed up their software lol. Thanks for sharing bro!
Would be good to see this review of other mid tier DSLRs with Magic Lantern to get a feel for what is most viable. I'm sure the age of some of these cameras directly effects the potential framerate and resolution you can get.
The clickbait is real. 😂🤣
magic lantern is legit
Edward Heavrin lol ok
Edward Heavrin that’s just 5k. Everything else is 24-48fps depending on the mode, for $500 which is what I spent on my 5Dii, it’s not a bad deal.
Peter C exactly.. idk why he was being a dick
Is the Mark III superior in Dynamic range shooting raw? I found out my friend is selling his mII for $400,00 . Also, can I shoot 60 FPS with ML?
Thats very interesting. How's the auto focus for movie mode on this camera?
Great video! I love my 5D MK II. Even though it mostly just sits there as the backup to my backup I can't bring myself to selling it. I'll haven't loaded ML on it for years so looking forward to dropping the latest version and having a play this weekend. Thanks again
What kind of lens is set up on camera at 1:39 min. And what lens i should use as a beginner.
Looks like a filter.
I doubt you'll see any higher frame rates than that. It's not really an issue of firmware allowing it. It's the recording media interface. Compact flash 1.0 is not fast enough.
I just started hacking my T3i last week with Magic Lantern. Even without a nice lens, there's noticeable improvement.
Very interesting and informative video I came across my youtube feed today.
5d2 was my first full frame camera from the t1i and that thing was a beast and it's crazy that it still is after a decade. This means that our cameras now have so much more potential with better software. If only magic lantern could hack the eos R
One of your best episodes.
Would you recommend the Canon EOS 5D MK III over the 5D MK II ?
Would there be any advantages?
Magic lantern will not give 5k 24fps movie mode because the sensor readout is really-really slow. But this it is a great option for timelapses, if you can buy a card large enough
Does anyone have any experience using Magic Lantern on 70d? What are the pros and cons? Is it worth it? Would you recommend it?
Definitely worth it!
Guess I’ll try it
Put it on my 70D the day the first nightly build went live. Night timelapse, JJC intervelometer from Amazon and you wont have to touch the camera.
do you think it will be worth saving more money and going for the blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k??
Very interesting topic would like more like this. I just subbed.
I've been hoping for a while now that they would make something for the 80D, but there hasn't been much development for that camera. Maybe I should look at some other options too.
you wont be disappointed with a 5dmk3, easily best looking ML camera
Oh yeah the mark 2 and the 3 are awesome cameras...I own th mark 3 and i love it its a great camera for new comers and experience film makers 👌🏼
