  • During their tenure at ILM, Adam and Fon Davis worked as model supervisors on the Matrix sequels. What was that like? Adam and Fon reminisce about the challenges and good times they experienced during that job -- and let's just say, laser cutting in 2002 was NOT what it is today!

I know that Star Wars is really high on Adams movie love list. But for me The Matrix always holds that spot. I refuse to call the 2nd and 3rd movie failures purely on the art design and special effects work of the Zion hangers. You found the proper solution to the facet of the curve issue. The only option is to make many small facets to appear as a curve. The reason is because it uses 3D models to cut, which are actually made of faceted triangles, even though a curve may appear smooth mathematically, in reality, it will always be faceted.

I spent a few years using a CMM. A 3 dimensional measuring.machine, not unlike a laser cutter, but had a volume inside of which you could measure ANY dimension on a 3d part. It was insanely accurate (up to .001mm). Held in a climate controlled room, with a ruby tipped probe, with a 1000 lb granite base. (Respect if you know why those features were important).
Point is, in 2009, I still feel Adam's assessment that the software was our limitation. It was so niche that our options for the scale of our hardware were almost none. I think our software provider was out of Germany, so support was a mess.

I remember watching the credits and seeing the APU's were made by 'Giant Killer Robots'.
In movies, some of my favorite 'characters' are machines. The 'Landmaster' APC from Damnnation Alley, the Colonial Marines M577 APC from 'Aliens', the Delorean Time Machine from BTTF, ED-209 from Robocop, proton packs from Ghostbusters, the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.

I now have two more goals in life. 1) I want an APU model, and 2) I really want to see the behind the scenes footage of that crash scene. A 36' "model" blasting through a 30' wide door? If they released a cinematic of that it would gross higher than M3.
