  • Short film of an ascent of Lurking Fear on El Cap that was meant to take 1 day, but due to weather and a slow party, ended up taking 3! Bivy footage is on pitch 13, were 2 of the team had to sleep on a 40 degree sloping slab all night. Steve (NZ)in blue has an eye condition meaning he only has 10% vision (that's why he has the biggest haul bag to carry, as we told him it was the smallest), while this was Johno's (AU) first big wall (we met him at El Cap bridge the day before, and thought it would be funny to do it with a Brit, Kiwi and Aussie). Other climbers seen in video are Steve Scnieder and Pat (68 years old, and on 6th El Cap route).
All footage was filmed on Cannon G15 compact camera.

so man of those pitches look like they could be easily free climbed by a 70 year old why bother aiding them and wasting valuable time?

One of them has only 10% of their vision and another has no big wall experience, regardless, a pretty miserable comment.

Commented like someone that has never climbed El Cap... but spends a lot of time talking big at the gym.
WASTING time is only done if you aren’t enjoying what you’re doing; some of us enjoy aid climbing.
And., there are very few that have NEVER aided anything on el cap and successfully topped-out. Even the best you’ve probably sat home and watched do it aid-climbed pitches on that big thing at some point. And even those few that haven’t, were only able to do it because it was aid-climbed in the past.
