Aren’t women amazing? I’m an artist, and suddenly got into textiles, slow stitching, embroidery, crazy primitive dolls. This is a fabulous and inspiring video. Thank you!
I am scrap happy all the time. I'm quite surprised Beth, that you have not done a scrap quilt previously. It was a pleasure to watch you work.
For those who might want some extra help as beginners, here are my top tips I used recently with a bag of donated scraps.
Sort by shape first.
Anything not quite like a square, or a long rectangular shape, gets put aside for dealing with separately.
Sort by width next. Ignore colour and pattern until later.
Make a pile of square like items into dark and light.
Combining a dark and light piece into a 2 patch almost always ensures some balance.
I made long strings of 2 patches into 4 then 8 etc.
I next added strings together to go across the width I wanted to cover.
The other version is to take a piece of paper that is the size you want to aim for and keep joining until you get slightly bigger than the paper square, then trim to suit it.
Bigger widths work better on the outside of squares because they are easier to join. So aim for a wider piece so that even after trimming it will show on the outside and reduce bulk when joining to the next item.
If you are comfortable with seeing my comments and tips please let me know, as I love the world of sewing and the quilting community is so awesome.

I'm doing crumb blocks that finish to five inches to use in a lap quilt for a wildlife charity.
Beth, you can take the smallest bit of fabric and make something beautiful. You are an inspiration for me. Thank you for your videos. They are so beautiful and creative.
"I didn't do a whole lot of thinking, just had fun. Sometimes some blocks grow into a quilt; sometimes they don't " Thanks for keeping it real Beth.
I LOVE crumb piecing!! I do it when I just need to quilt but dont have a project. Or when im burnt out and need something mindless. I dont worry about what shape they are. I usually dont even worry if they "go together". I just sew straight sides together. If a side gets to wonky, I trim it straight. When I get around 8ish inches, I cut a 6.5 square from it. Then the trim offs become the start of the next piece. When I have enough squares, I add sashing and voila!
I have so much fun doing this! If its going to a child, I will even make an eye spy list to go with it. 😊
Yes Its addictive! I make my squares Big 12” and sew together. Because of all the seams, I tie them, making the quilt even more scrappy❤(KH)
@@davidhatfield5714 ooo! I havent tied one yet! I bet that it's beautiful!!! The batting I use doesnt lend itsself to tying. But I might pick up some poly batting so that i can do one that day 😊
I have quite a stack ready for a quilt. My friend loves scrappy quilts, but can't bring herself to make them. So im making her one for cmas. Im alternating the scrappy blocks w her favorite themes, then doing simple corner to corner straight line quilting.
@@trinam2503 hi you might like Marie's scrappy creations channel. Plenty of other inspiration there too. Fun people who all like to join in and share what they are doing.
i love love love love crumb quilting, especially wonky........
I make these a lot a group of friends I sewn with call them mile a minute blocks. So relaxing ,no stress
Great name👍
This block is beautiful💕. Crumb piecing is my favorite! Thank you for sharing☺️
I really love your work! Always lovely. Always inspiring!
I enjoy using up scraps this way. I typically use a "log cabin" technique, starting in the middle and working around and out. When I get to about 10 inches ( sometimes larger) I trim and set aside. I've used the squares for bag fronts, quilt square swaps, potholders, hot pads...
Lately I found I don't have the mental energy to cut and piece a quilt top. It's very sad, since I have some nice projects waiting for me. But I do have the energy to sit and make a small tidbit.
Thank you for sharing/commenting, because you inspired me so much. -Beth in Texas
I adore crumb quilting. Its my favourite style of quilting. Always love your videos. Monica from Australia
I love crumb quilting! The colours abd shapes always go together amazingly. Well done, I really like your videos. I love the slow motion addition at the end too 😀
I love the sashing it gives the eye a place to rest....you do beautiful work Thanks for the video
During 20/21 lockdown, I saw about crumb quilting but didn’t have a scrap of fabric, so went on line and bought lots of scrap packs etc, then started making lots of squares, just kept on going, till eventually I thought I’d better see how many I had… it turned out to become a king size bed quilt… The hardest part was doing the batting and backing fabric it was so big, and all done on my small kitchen table… love from London uk 🇬🇧
I've been making some quilt as you go tote bags with my fabric crumbs and scraps this week. I love just playing around with the shapes and colors. I can get lost in it for hours, like working on a jigsaw puzzle.
Thrilling. Its so exciting to see your artistic talents as you grow this quilt block. Makes my heart sing.
I love crumb quilts so much. Keep going and make another lovely quilt.
Awesome looks like a fun project. Thanks for the video
I LOVE crumb quilts. I’m sewing some crumbs blocks into HSTs at 3” finished
I love crumb quilting. Currently I’m cutting 4.5” blocks
The white sashing brings so much life into completed block. Thank you.
Sew glad you went alittle bigger with 6 inch squares, cause I love that little piece of strawberries 🍓 in it!
I can sit for hours sewing scraps together. I cut my scrap blocks to 5in and keep on hand if I need to make a gift quickly. Right now Im turning my scrappy blocks into stars.
I love making crumb blocks and quilts! Yours are soft and so pretty
A pleasure to watch.
I love making crumb blocks. I’m going to make dog blankets out of them.
Great block Beth. I used all my Christmas crumbs last year to make hot pads and mug rugs for presents. Amazing how far these tiny scraps go.💞🇦🇺
Crumb quilting is a new concept to me and I love how this turned out! So fun! I can see doing a table runner or top with this too. Your quilt will be stunning Beth! P.S. I really like the music that you use!
Crumb quilting is the best!
Beautiful quilt block. I love crumb quilts. Please make an entire quilt.
Thank you for this great video. I love crumb quilts because I just hate wasting even the smallest of scraps of beautiful fabric.
Thanks to your simple tutorial I am making crumb blocks they are sew addictive thanks for everything you do
I’ve always enjoyed crumb piecing. Fabric was precious to my grandmother, and I think I inherited some of her traits.
Love your crumb quilt! They really appeal to me. Like a crazy quilt without putting in all the bling etc. I love decoupage, and it’s kind of the same thing for me. Thanks Beth 🇦🇺❤️
You have such a natural eye for color and shape! Well done!
Thank you so much!
I love crumb quilting! Mindless sewing! I make 12.5 inches blocks and use them in many projects such as a strip vertically to increase the width of the quilt backing. I recently use then to make yippee pouches or as pockets inside tote bags. They are so versatile!
Mindless - not having a pattern-
Mindful- placing each price like a puzzle.
Love watching when people have the passion and patience to put together bits and bits to create something lovely; beautiful and esp..utilizing scraps....🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love crumb quilting. I've made totebags and baby bibs. I've made small quilts. Now I am making a crumb quilt for my queen size quilt. I'm looking forward to see the end results. It is very exciting and fun. I'm working on getting rid of my scraps just piling up. I just hope everyone will experience this joy of crumb quilting
How fun I love scrap quilts! ❤❤❤
I love crumb quilts, especially when I don't want to plan and think....
The bonus is using the lovely scraps I have!
How fun Beth! And relaxing at the same time! Blessings!
Over the last year I made 6 tablemats, and a tote bag with crumbs. The mats are used for a picnic table. My grandsons loved connecting the scraps to quilts I've sewed over the years for them. My tote bag is. often admired.
Beth, Good morning from NY! I love starting my day with a video you’ve put together. It doesn’t matter if it’s something I’m interested in or not. If you don’t have a new one up, I’ll go back to an old one, I always start my day with Beth! You’re laid back presentation and melodic voice soothes me and is like stretching before a marathon. I crumb quilt every morning, but then give my blocks to my quilting students to do with as they please, because, while it’s a good and freeing sewing activity, it is unpleasing to my eye and sense of organization. I’m more a “matchy matchy” kinda sewist. However, I do sew for Project Linus and as I look at your final picture of a finished crumb quilt, I’m thinking, hmmmm, maybe I’ve finally found a worthy project for the kids! Wondering, can I ask my students for the blocks back?!? 🤣 🥴 😂 Thank you for all the work you put in to your channel and the frequency with which you post! I love, love, love your channel❣️
Even your crumb quilt blocks are beautiful!
Hello Beth..a notice always seems to arrive in my brain in box and one of your fab projects is there to make me smile…if l need inspiration ..l know where to go..please stay prolific…thank you once again..🇨🇦
Always lovely and satisfying video♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️.
I really LOVE the borders and the little square in the center. Thanks for the idea.
This is such a good idea, when one runs into roadblocks w/quilt making or attempting to sew a sundress with shirring (and, on an industrial machine it's not as easy as it was on Mom's Singer) and feeling totally frustrated but needing something to calm the frustration, sewing up crumb blocks is a great idea!
It's amazing how just sewing bits and pieces together can sooth the storm and create beautiful blocks for future projects! Great idea!
Thanks, Beth!
Thanks for hearting this, Beth. I saw that I misspelled quilt (guilt) so corrected it. I guess when one edits, any comments disappears...
Anyway, thanks!
So true. ! AMEN GIRL
The sashing was a really good idea. It keeps the wild crumbs somewhat under control! Very nice!!
Very nice Good use of scraps, u did an awesome 👏🏼 job. Love ur videos very inspiring 👍👏🏼👏🏼🥳
I really enjoy watching all the different ways people do crumb quilts. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful fabrics.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Always be safety and carefully.
Lovely crumb quilt…I will start saving all scraps…thank you Beth❣️
I love it also. Started a box. I put mine on old sale papers as a foundation and stash them in the box until I have enough for a quilt. I've also been making a piano keyboard on 3 inch wide strips of paper. It is fun and relaxing.
Love this. I am now off to work my scraps and have a go. Thank you 🙏
Absolutely love it with the muslin borders
What a great idea! I think it will be pretty, Beth. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for showing how to use scraps and making a beautiful quilt.
This is what I do on Sunday afternoon. Mine are 3 1/2 ". I just keep stacking them up. One day I will decide how I want to put them together. One day!
I like the crumb blocks with sashing
I love crumb blocks, the sashing is a great addition. It’s so relaxing to watch the process. Thanks Beth.
Beth the crumb blocks are a great idea! So cute.❤
I love crumb quilts- I’ve been building crumbs ( even tiny crumbs) for almost 3 years- it’s growing and is getting pretty larger. I never realized how much pink I actually use, until now! Maybe by the end of the year I will have a full size quilt of just crumbs!
An older gentleman who was here for a visit, saw my crumb project in my sewing room and mentioned that when he was growing up, most people had crumb quilts- they never let anything go to the trash- they didn’t call it “crumb” they just called it- bedding- a coat, britches, window covers, table cover etc-- I call it “bits and bobs”- never the less it is beautiful to see all of the tiny colors - 1/2 inch to 1 inch-
Not only is it Bank Holiday Monday, but there’s a video from you 🎉🥳🎉 What a great start to my day 🤩 Think adding the sashing is a great idea 👏👏 It lets each block ‘shine’ by itself, and gives your eyes somewhere to ‘rest’ 😃 Another great quilt that will brighten somebody’s day when it’s finished 🤩 They will feel the love 🥰 Thanks Beth 👏👏🇬🇧
Great , watching how you did this, I think we all had loads of small pieces of fabric we just can’t throw away, what a great idea to put together in a nice format for a quilt. Thanks for sharing.
It's so nice to watch your videos ! You always are so sweet and very gifted sewist love your videos ! Thank you sweetie 🌻 Happy sewing
I love your crumb block. It’s a fun relaxing process for me.
I’m like you, I can’t throw my crumbs away! It’s always fun to do some mindless sewing between projects. I have a room full of fabric and I get the most enjoyment playing with the scraps and crumbs. The sashing is almost a requirement to give the eye a rest. Thanks for sharing!
The bug hasn’t bit me yet! I have far too many quilts I want to make. Perhaps someday I’ll look into it crumb piecing.
Your pieces look great tho 👍
Beautiful block and the sashing is finishes nicely!
Suggestions for crumb quit blocks if you are not interested in making a full size quilt: doll quilts and pet beds.
Love that you use tiny "crumbs." I have many of these, thought if they were worth keeping but each piece has value. Thank you for sharing.
I have been interested in crumb quilting, lately. Not for bigger quilts, but smaller projects, like a tote bag. I am also thinking about making larger fabric pieces from sewing similar colored scraps. But, I haven’t done any of it, yet.
I have seen crumb quilts done in the same colour family and with colours that usually match,, they look great too. I encourage you to give it a go, you'll love it.
@@saleenahaffenden8292 I'm working on a shopping tote also with small pieces. I like your idea of the same color family. Hadn't thought of that.
Wow what a beautiful crumb quilt, I'm quilting a sort of scrappy quilt I'm using left overs from a friend's in the forest line and have added some sample fabrics that go with the theme, will go to a homeless family, that has been our focus this year for our charity quilts. Thankyou love your TH-cam channel.
This looks like an amazing use for my scraps. Also I know I’ve been a nurse too long because I’m noticing your veins. A dream for IV easy starts. lol .
Any kind of scrap quilting feels consistent with the origins of quilting to use what you have. I do some quilting and some simple clothes sewing. I don't like to have a big stash, so I periodically make some. 8x8 string and crumb blocks. Someday I'll have enough to make a queen size quilt for my bed.
I REALLY like crumb quilts!
I have gathered quite a stash by always grabbing up any scraps at whatever event I may attend.
My personal choice of fabrics is fairly eclectic, but always dark and bold.
Having others' scraps, my blocks have a life of their own.
I love quilt stores that sell grab bags of scraps - - so much scrapping, and so many ideas.
Watching your videos encourages me in my chosen reason for quilting - - to bring color and odds and ends to a useful destination.
Wow Beth, These scrappy blocks are really beautiful. I love all the different colors and shapes together. I adore the solid sashing with a pretty corner stone in it, because it gives a place for the eye to rest. I have not seen the addition of sashing to a crumb quilt before. I absolutely love the results. I have tried to make a crumb quilt. I didn’t like what I came up with so i think I threw some of it away. That surprised me to as I have seen some other crumb quilts and really liked them. I wasn’t able to figure out why/what was wrong with mine. I’m about to have eye surgery and maybe that is part of the problem, as I am not seeing like I used too. If I attempt to work on crumb quilting again, if you don’t mind, I would love to follow suit with the sashing and corner stone like you have done. It’s truly beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing, 👍💖🥰 Chris
I make quite a few crumb pieces that I turn into a quilt 😊
My brain was starting to get very confused when you start sewing the four squares together and then there’s that middle section joining the other hat Omgosh, but it’s so easy, and oh, you are amazing and the video is so nice and slow said that it can be understood without pulling my hair out!! Lol. thank you so much.
I always enjoy watching people see with scraps especially crumbs but you seem to put more thought into the process and the results, I think, are worth the time. 😍
I am endlessly fascinated by crumb quilts and how people puzzle them together. (I've never seen anyone sew two long pieces together down the long length & now am thinking, that would add a bit of "something else.")
I love this quilt block. So pretty and creative. When all the blocks and sashing were together is really pretty. Now I know what to do with all those little pieces of fabric. Thx Beth
Inspiring. Thanks!
Thank you so much Beth, I really really love ❤❤❤ how those blocks turned out, and it’s great to be able to use all those little pieces of fabric up. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
I like the sashing it looks real nice!
Have made a few crumb quilts & they are my favorite to make since I am using all my scraps. I save everything & feel thrifty when I can make a quilt out of the blocks.i Its addictive too!
I live for scraps and love crumb quilts. Beth, this block is amazing! God bless.
I like your creation.
Love it. Like the sashing !
love your quilt. give me a.good.idea to sew me a quilt with all my small squares.
I know what you mean about sometimes it turns into a quilt sometimes not. Sometimes I use scrap fabric like a coloring book or meditation. The process of playing with the colors is relaxing. Sometimes I like the finished product. Sometimes I don't. But it is always relaxing to my brain. And I'm sure on some level I'm learning or improving on a skill.
Think I will give it a try. I’ve enjoyed watching this demonstration.
I love the randomness of this method. It looks so happy and colourful. Will do one of these for sure.
Yet another great quilt using scraps! Love, love, love it.
So pretty and easy!
This is so calming to watch!!!
I love doing crumb blocks your video you have shown us is the same way i do mine and i have made all type of items thankyou
Hello and good morning friend, thank you for a amazing tutorial. I have all leftover scrapes.
I would love to see how you store your fabric! I'm redoing my sewing room, but it is so overwhelming with sooooo much fabric!
I do have a video about that… but I wil say fabric takes up a lot of space!🙂
I do by colour if bigger than a fat quarter and by size for everything else. By bagged sizes for squares and strips in cubes for the smaller items. So I can take out a bag of one size squares and play with stuff until I make a block or a piece that becomes a project. Or strip piece QAYG placemats etc.
I love the smashing and corner stones with the crumb blocks! ❤️🙂
