Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Sleepers awake'/'Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying') from the Schübler Collection by Johann Sebastian Bach, played on the 1957 Åkerman & Lund organ in Ore Church, Rättvik, Sweden. The organ has some pipe material from the previous organ built in 1902 by the local builder P. J. Johansson.

Last week I posted a Reger setting of 'Sleepers Awake’, but this week it’s time for the more famous version, the one by Bach!✨ One of his most beloved organ chorales, it is the opening chorale of his highly appreciated 'Schübler Collection', but is actually a transcription of a movement from the cantata known as 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme'.⏰ The hymn itself exists in numerous translations, but the German original alludes to the parable of the ten virgins, more specifically the wise ones who DID have oil in their lamps and were let in to the marriage feast by the bridegroom - meaning we should all be prepared for the return of the Saviour.👰‍♀In Sweden it’s more known as a hymn for the last Sunday of the Church Year - the 'Doom Sunday'.🎺
