  • Join me on the granulation paint saga!
    I experimented with making my own granulating Dusk colors similar to the new Van Gogh Dusk colors: shrsl.com/2ikap
    I used Quin Magenta, Medium Yellow, Pthalo blue and Pthalo green mixed with a black watercolor containing Pbk11.
    I used Renesans Mars Black: www.etsy.com/l...
    Daniel Smith Lunar Black would also work: shrsl.com/2ikav
    I also experiment with Jane Davenport Inkcredible ink and I really loved the effect: shrsl.com/2ikb5
    I also tried Salt waterand granulation medium: shrsl.com/2ikba

    I love the entirety of your channel, but I can't even express the JOY i got from this video!
    And how i agree with how mixing (wasting) paint is much better than scrolling facebook!
    also, I was aware of pb11 and its lovely effects, but this video just made me fall in love and created needs I didn't have previously...not complaining!
    WE need joy and texture brings me joy!
    Thanks for this one Lindsay!

      @@KobieK I suppose you have not watched the video. That video brought me joy, Jay. It clearly did not do it for you, and I suppose its okay. I'm sending you hugs, in hopes they help you go through whatever you're going through that makes you object to my expression of gratitude I adressed to a creator I like.
      You don't have to lime what I like, Jay.

    LOVE this. I have Daniel Smith lunar black on hand - so had to do my own swatches immediately! My favorites ended up being M. Graham and QOR quinacridone colors, especially the golds. Beautiful. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

  • @rhondita95
    @rhondita95 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I was planning to do something similar myself and you beat me to it! Tho I’m sure I’ll still play around. Wondering if the Renesans paints didn’t respond as well because they are honey based? Be interesting to see if Senn or M Graham does the same. FYI , if someone is REALLY on a budget, Van Gogh’s oxide black is also made of PBk 11. There’s a nice PBk 11 in the Roman Szmal Aquarius paints, as well. New to me - I’ve never even thought about trying to paint with salt water and what the effects might be! I’ll have to try that! This was not a boring video at all, I think maybe you were just getting tired and things weren’t going necessarily as planned, lol! I had fun, though and learned things too.

  • @heidicook2395
    @heidicook2395 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I love this! In my opinion learning is never a waste of materials. And I say I'm "playing" when I am trying something new or learning a new process. There is no pressure in playing; the goal is to have fum.
    Try putting a little plastic wrap or wax paper inside the lid. It will help protect the edges from the salt water and will make it much easier to get the top off. If the lid is a ring with an insert it is easier because you can wrap the plastic around the insert. Thanks again Lindsey, I truly appreciate your time and effort.💗

    Great idea! I love Daniel Smith's Lunar Earth used in a similar way. Added to any green it makes a very granulating sap green with a "dirt" effect like DS's Green Apatite Genuine. It is prettier than I am describing it! Haha. One tube will last me a lifetime and I've shared half pans with my art group friends. I am going to have to get some of the Renesans Mars Black!

    Wow, haven't thought about granulation much (well, I got what I got and I don't have quite so many different watercolours in my stash yet - just my Pelikan transparent ones (which were my starters), some of the Van Goghs in half pans 3 or 4 White Nights half pans, which I bought, because I missed some primaries and secondaries in the Pelikan box - and some Gansai type ones and my sumi paints) , yet, but those look really beautiful 🥰. Especially the blue rivulets! I love stormy, churny sea water :) Somehow those paints really remind me of my Boku Undo Sumi paints, though those don't seem to granulate. Well, probably because the sumi ink in them doesn't ^^'

    I bought a small tube of DS Lunar Blue because "look at that shiny squirrel (on double sale at my local art store)!!" It's Cerulean Blue with Lunar Black. I did the cellophane trick and left it until almost dry. I took off the plastic and oh wow, the crystals. So at another big sale I bought the Lunar Black. The first option I tried was Opera Pink. Oh wow. And then Pthalo Green. And then a bright orange mix of Pyrrol Scarlet and Hansa Yellow. Each was at least as good as the last. My mixes were waterier on purpose than yours are and I think it helped show through the granulation. I used the most obnoxious colors in my collection. But oh wow, fun. After reading on the DS web site, I've been known to experiment with organic versus inorganic pigments, the reason why their Undersea Green is so cool. Because the inorganic/organic pigments don't interact, it creates a fun halo effect when one pigment runs away from the other. I've also played with a PR 101, which likes to chase away blues. That was fun. As a beginner I have a few paintings and a library of cool blobs, LOL. It's all good escape and with the DS it takes hardly any paint.

    Thank you SO much, Lindsay. I am a sucker for moody colors and was also always kinda amazed by granulation colors but it never quite got to me to a point where I'd buy them, cause most of the time I want a soft effect to my painting and also I always wanna be flexible. So I didn't want to just have some colors I'd never get out and couldn't use for every painting. But buying this ONE black and mixing it with all my colors to achieve those wonderful moody granulation colors - I'm shook right now, tbh. :D Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to trying all the mixes!

    I have laugh at your awful sprayer. I have one to with the trigger rather than the push top, but the plastic they used to mfg the the bottle, has gone brittle & fallen apart. I’ve had it less than 2 years. My experience in the past is the pumps quit working not the bottle. I’ve been hoping to find another bottle from anything & screw on the nozzle sprayer, but all have been too narrow so far. My spouse said I get plumbers tape & try it. But the plastic was so brittle it just kept breaking down. So your awful sprayer just made me laugh so much, along with everything else ( cant get in the jar) story of my life,along with large cans like pork & Beans. Thanks for the fun!

    Lindsay, I use Tim Holtz Sprayer and its really good, have you tried it? I specially like that you can actually block it so that you can take it in your bag and it does not spray. If you use it quickly it sprays fine and if you use it slow it sprays in big drops. It has never clogged yet also. It is a bit more expensive that those cheapy sprayers from the dollar stores but I think its totally worth it, I use it now as my standard sprayer for water for all arts.

    Thank you for this video. I never was able to grasp what you meant when you said granulation, but now I see it and it is pretty cool. I have a tube that is called lamp black will that work? Have you tried it with distress oxides? I think that might be fun to try, unless there is an issue that would be a problem. And, BTW thanks for the anti scunk bath recipe. It either worked or the smell just finally wore off. Rocky and I are friends again.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      I think the oxides are too opaque and heavy to get the look. You want the contrast of a transparent color.

    • @rhondita95
      @rhondita95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lamp black won’t work. It doesn’t granulate. You want a black that has pigment PBk11. Van Gogh, Roman Szmal (Aquarius), and Renesans all make reasonably priced options. Daniel Smith and Rembrandt both make pricier options.

    Just a few thoughts... 1. The dried solid salt granules does add some interesting looks of its own with the black mix. 😍. 2. “Muddy paint better than scrolling Facebook” - hahaha yessss!!!! 3. Which video did you do the comparison of painting with regular vs salt water? And most importantly.... 4. Yes, we are your ‘people’ ~ we are a tribe of like-minded people who are all creative, curious, and silly. We live real and authentic lives and are unashamed to sometimes be a hot mess. We use our creativity as a way to express ourselves - and calm our souls in chaotic times. We balance everything by choosing priorities that are based on the needs of our families and ourselves... and sometimes that requires us to put something off or take a shortcut. That does not make us - YOU - lazy. We are all doing our best and that’s why we love you. Please stop calling yourself lazy... you inspire us with your hard work and creative energy and we relate to your real & sometimes chaotic life. No one needs to feel guilty for the ‘small stuff’ ... especially you! Thank you for hard work and commitment to making such great content! 🥰🥳🙃🥰

    I love this video and the great response you received . However, I am not sure what happened with the granulating medium experiment? Maybe try applying it after applying inks and paints that have less water. For example, paint a wash on watercolor paper (100% cotton) then charge in a bit more color or inks and then add the granulating medium (with pipette) and let it work, do not mix it into the paints/ink.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

    Thanks for the tips. I made versions of the dusk colors a few weeks ago that turned out good but I purchased the Van Gogh anyways. They are so inexpensive on Jerry's and I already had an order to place so I thought what the heck. I purchased all of the colors at less than $3 a tube. I was super impressed with the quality. Makes me want more Van Gogh colors. I never thought to try to make dusk colors with other pigments. Thanks for wasting your products for us. I don't consider it a waste though when I play this way. I learn something every time even if it's negative.

    haha! Thank you so much for testing this! I know the name of Mars Black is supposed to come from an association with the Roman god Mars to a property of the pigment, but... the ink and first salt set especially, both look like the photos of martian and lunar landscapes!

    I just watched Iris Langrit mix QOR paints with other brands paints. QORs binder Aquasol created amazing effects that resembled the trendy super-granulating colors. I would love to see your brain wrap around the concept & bust out your QOR paints to mix with other brands. She was worried about the video being too long so she didn't really jump into it on video, anyway. You have no qualms about making long videos & showing us lots of different ways to use our paints. I don't have a studio, lights or the supplies to do it. You're equipped to so a comprehensive expose' on QOR mixed with artist grade or good student grade paints 😊 I'd bet a QOR granulating black mixed with other brands woukd be amazing 😃

    I love to do beach scenes but always have to put grass or rocks in the foreground. If I have granulating medium how would I paint the sand up close and further away does the med change the color.. I grew up on the beach and can't get it right. Thanks stay safe ❤️

    Was thinking of this video after I just received a new handmade paint..PBk14, Magnesium Grey(black in mass tone)..AND IT SHIMMERS! NO added mica, like some of the PrimaTek colors, just natural. Kourtney, the young lady who made it from scratch said it even surprised her!
    I’m not big on mica colors…but I LOVE the very slight shimmer I can get with some PrimaTek mixes. This black one though…shimmery shadows! Unfortunately, I’ve been a bit under the weather..it seems like I get some new, weird diagnosis every time my girls force me to go to the doctor…🙄😖😂. Cie la vie… I had just received that paint and some new primateks (that I’m liking WAY too much these days), including Bronzite and had only done a full mixing chart for Bronzite and started my new shimmery shadow mixes…when I ended up back in bed. It’s ok though, I’m making a spreadsheet of all my paints & including mixing notes (Thank God for iPads!). I’m hoping to feel better today so I can go through as many mixes with it as I can. Kourtney is thinking of making a set of just shimmery shadow mixes for her shop. I’m curious if the shadow blue, purple and green can possibly take another colors to come up with some dupes of some of the popular darker mixes…with a touch of shimmer! We shall see!! 😁

    I was totally cracking up! Great "experiment"! You used your paints so we don't have to, lol. Turner tube of Mars Black is very inexpensive ($4?), but has that Japanese type of formulation, so not as granulating as DS Lunar Black. Still great to have on hand. Really love these jewel tones. I think I'll try to make them in half pans and see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏🏼🎨

    So this vid was years ago but if you haven't tried Lunar black yet- DEFINITELY DO! 🤩👍
    It has insane granularity and texture for days! I bought a half pan just to try it out and after a little over 3 months with it, it's nearly time for me to buy a tube to refill the pan.
    Thanks for bringing us along on your granulation journey! Very helpful! 🙏😊

    Thank you so much for the insightful experiments! I've been thinking on getting a tube of granulating black to add to my colors for that unique effect 👍💕
    I sometimes feel when I experiment I waste paints, but i always try to remember "what is progression without practice and experimenting?" Even when the day comes when all the paints are used up, i'd look back and say "i've gotten better at my craft" ✌🌈

    I'm always doing this with lunar black! Any time I dont know what to paint, I end up with swatches of differemt colors combined with lunar black. I like trying to mix my own "lunar" colors, but honestly mine never really turn out as well as the ones daniel smith sells. I also love doing this experiment with Daniel smith graphite gray and seeing how close I cab get to my graphitint pencils. Ive had the granulation medium in my blick cart for months but its still out of stock and none of my local places have it, so I look forward to playing with that one day. I just love granulation and letting special effects paints do their thing without having to rely on my rendering ability (or lack thereof) to make things look interesting,lol. Thanks so much for the video :) Its very useful to see how things mix out.
