I was interested in the cover over where the spare was because I have to have access to my spare and tools in the event of a flat because I am doing a SUV conversion. Thank you for posting, it confirmed my original plan to hinge the flooring. I would have liked to see how the entire platform lifted when you were organizing.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I am happy this video was helpful. If you email me I can send back some still images of how I organized everything and what it looks like with the wood floor lifted. Unfortunately, I have had some medical issues arise which will prevent me from emailing you back until the second week of January. subarusleeping@gmail.com

I have the same rack and you gave me a some great ideas. I've been wanting to put a full size spare on top, I think this might work, thanks.

A full size spare will definitely work. Glad this video helped and possibly inspired you. Enjoy your adventures.

I did a similar mod to mine but I took out the factory foam and replaced it with a 2x4 on each on the outer edges of the cavity, it gave me a heap more space for tools and survival equipment.

I thought of doing that but can’t remember why I didn’t. In my next episode I will be doing a series of modifications to existing builds. I will add this to the list. THANKS for the idea and thanks for watching. Stay tuned.

A junkyard, salvage yard or pick & pull is a good place to find good full size rim & tire. Just be sure to Spin it first to see if it's bent.

Great suggestion, thanks! Pick & Pulls, those are fun places. The good old fashioned ones where you could bring your own tools and wonder acres on junk cars set on tires are rare. Although, I do appreciate the places that inventory everything for you and remove the items too. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video.

I am starting off as a residential electrician, and I really want to maximize my space in my trunk but my concern is if I fill up the back of my car with crap it'll be impossible to get to the spare tire and I don't want to throw it on the roof because then it's at the mercy of the weather

Check out the video I just posted about installing a Full-size spare in the cargo area.

Got a 2021 Trek and had a roof rack and aero bars on it for about a year .. was getting 27/29mpg With the rack in place. Once removed I’m getting 32/34mpg … something to consider

You’re spot on with the gas mileage. I am averaging 29.6 with the rack on in the city. On long highway trips it still says my average is 33 which seems crazy with the rack. I do miss the extra MPG, but love having all the extra space for gear in the spare tire’s place with room to grow on the roof. Thanks for watching and for your comments.

I will say, I have had to travel for work before and I've stayed at campsites, and it really sucks to have to worry about your tent during the daytime or to load up stuff everyday,

@@creationsbycarson I've sometimes thought about putting the tire on my back hatch, but one I don't like how it blocks the window two I don't know if the hatch pneumatics are strong enough to hold it out and thirdly it gets splashed to hell in the winter time

@@RediTtora I think the weight of the spare tire would be too much for the rear hatch. However, I saw a unique build online and have contacted the company today to learn more. I am awaiting their response. Their spare tire mount is lower and off-centered. I will let you know in the comments as soon as I hear something.

@@creationsbycarson I think the solution would be if you wanted to have it on the outside would be to have stronger arms. They do make appropriate hatch arms usually for bigger hatches. It might require a touch more strength to close them but it would also make it a lot easier to open it

Not even a full size spare. Maybe get better gas miles with the tiny donut tire. They just don't last vert long at all esp if you go off road. I think a full size would fit up top and for sure on a rear gate type bracket.

Couldn't agree more! I installed a Full-Size Spare in Ep. 35. I am considering getting a hitch and bracket for the Spare. Check out Ep 35: th-cam.com/video/8TeVNpzV6nc/w-d-xo.html

Yea a rear swing out would work but you might tire of it taking up garage space and blocking you from easy tail access. You can put a class 1 hitch on it tow light stuff. But.. Seems to me you almost need something a little bigger and more powerful. Like a Landrover LR4 they store full size under. Or a Defender 130. They get terrible miles vs the subaru though. Then you can tow with a class 3 hitch. Not that many great gas mile SUV with room and power to tow. Rivians? hehe they have issues too.

@@Physics072 I agree regarding the rear tire setup. So far, the full-sized tire under the raised cargo floor has worked well, and I average 30.9 MPG. I owned a 4 Runner back in the day. It was a V8, which had too much power for that vehicle. But it was fun. If it had been a 4X4, I would have kept it forever. I sold new Land Rovers for 15 years and countless other used cars in the car business. I owned a few LR Discoverys, the older ones, of course. Surprisingly, the Defenders don't have a lot of room in the front for someone my height. The LR3s and LR4s would be great for car camping. Lots of room, fold-flat seats, and excellent off-road capabilities. Rivians are cool, but I am not ready for full electric and would instead get a hybrid. That concept seems more realistic in the grand scheme of things. Why can't the automotive industry get more efficient and crank out 500 MPG with electric assist? Until that happens, I will stick with the Subaru and try to figure out the best setup for now.

@@creationsbycarson Well it sounds like you know what options are out there. Yea a V8 that got 35 mpg would be awsome. I choose to pay more for gas and went V8 dont hate me :) I did buy my kid a volt so that makes up for it.

@ I love V8s. You can never have too much horse power. Torque is nice too. Thanks again for watching and for chatting with me tonight.
