Installed a Full-Size Tire and new Cargo floor Ep. 35 4K
I am driving more for work and need better fuel economy, so I decided to remove the roof rack and move the full-size spare tire into the cargo area, but I still want to carry all the gear I had been placing in the old spare space. Watch how I make it work.

Self Bow Build Ep. 34
มุมมอง 180ปีที่แล้ว
My son and I made a Self Bow based on what we learned on Kramer Ammons' TH-cam channel. This is a great episode on his channel for reference: th-cam.com/video/oghY3asY5jY/w-d-xo.html We bought one 8-foot-long 1x2 piece of Red Oak, some Pecan Poly-Stain, two wooden dowels, a large Rawhide bone from the pet store, and a bowstring from Amazon. All in at $62.

Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you :)
My Pleasure. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Not for cars.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Does the head section flex downward or is it stable while loaded.
Thanks for watching and commenting. The head section is stable and straight. There might be some sort of flex in the wood itself, but I don’t notice it while sleeping.
@@creationsbycarson thanks.
Very good idea, thank u. Very cheap and helpfull
Thank you for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for new builds.
.....without gloves...?! What does that even mean?
Not sure where to begin. There was a stent in my builds when I was wearing gloves. Not sure why I was doing it or why people cared. I have since broken the habit.😎
Love it, thanks 😊
Thank you for watching and commenting. I am working on a new build now. Stay tuned.
Insanity.... the sleeping part. Hell no. Sorry and best wishes.
@@NA-su3jk Agreed 100%. I already dismantled it and used it for a raised floor to cover the full size spare that I moved to the cargo area in episode 35. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Isn't it better to simply use an air mattress? It doesn't need to be perfectly level to have a good sleep
I hear you and these days there are a lot of options for air mattresses. I would just need to find one long enough and I could go that route. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for more builds. I am going to look into an air mattress option or combination now.
I've been searching for a simple bed assembly for my 2015 Subaru Outback. With the Outback there is a 60/40 back seat fold down which will allow a 32" inch wide bed vs your "24 in wide. This project of yours is preferable to any I've found in that it can fold up and store much easier. Thanks. Wish me luck
Why would you want to use chemically treated woods inside the car?
Thank you for watching and commenting. I never gave that much thought plus I coat everything with that Poly-stain which might not be good for me either. No issues yet. I will take this into consideration on the next build. What wood do you suggest that doesn’t produce an off-gassing potential?
I would suggest any wood for indoor use (with natural colors). Keep in mind that Home Depot refuses to cut chemically treated woods (greenish looking) inside the store, so it shows how potential harmful it can be if breathed in. I also wasn't sure about the strength of the head piece which doesn't have a dedicated support leg toward the front. But in general folding bed is a great idea, perfected by legs of different heights to make it leveled! I enjoyed watching your build process.
What was the purpose of this video. Things were already made
Thank you for watching and commenting. I was not aware of a similar option for tall individuals. Please share the link to what you’re referencing. I am always interested in learning about other options. Thanks again.
I have a 2008 camry. Can you make a bed for that? I don't know if you build for other people. Thanks.
Thank you for watching and for the comments. Please email me at: carcampingwithcarson@gmail.com Include your height and some pictures showing the inside of your car with the rear seats down. Send multiple different pictures from different perspectives. I think I might know someone who drives a Toyota Camry. If so, I would love to do a build. I will be on the lookout for your email.
Hi. Do you have a video showing how to build the long shelf?
Apologies for the delay. I appreciate you watching and commenting. I built this long drawer on Ep. 20 but don’t think I did a sufficient job on providing measurements or build instructions. I will get a video out detailing it soon.
Wear your gloves dude! You wouldn’t forget to wear your safety goggles during a haircut would you!?
Hilarious! Love the comments. I have recovered from my addiction to glove wearing and use my bare hands now.
All you gotta do is write to Robie, and they'll send you another base. Give them the model number and everything. And they'll send you a new base one time
Thank you for watching and commenting. Remind me what base you’re referencing regarding the base. Is Robie a typo, is it Ryobi? Did I mention an issue with one of my tools? Thank you for your help and suggestions.
Gloves impede your feel for the work and are not necessary when using hand tools.
I agree. I don’t wear them anymore. Thank you for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for new builds.
LOL Gloves are not "a must" when using a hand saw!
Agreed. I have changed my ways. Thank you for watching and commenting.
For those with allergies, suggest a 'No VOC' paint that Sherwin Williams sells. You will be sleeping in a closed-in environment without any real circulation of fresh air when you camp in Stealth Mode.
I appreciate the tip. I am brainstorming a new two-person platform and will use your suggestion. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Mr. Tender Hands
😂
Circular saw 10 times better than the jigsaw for straight cuts…How much better than the handsaw?😂
Agreed. I have one now. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I don't normally wear gloves, but safety glasses are an absolute must. At the minimum sunglasses when using power tools.
Agreed! I work in an industry that always promotes proper PPE and I need to make sure I promote this practice on my channel. In my next episode, I will make sure to wear safety glasses when using the saws. The gloves I might skip based on previous comments and the fact that I probably don’t need them so much for what I am doing. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Great stuff! I’m about to do something similar to my Fit, minus the full size spare.
Sounds great! I love before and after pictures. Email me or place them in these comments. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
Cool idea! I think if I were to make a copy of that myself, I'd add some sort of C channel to the end so it can just slide over the step in either orientation (full table or step & table)
That’s a great idea! I need to work on that modification. Much more streamlined. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I'm in a 2011 Forester. The front seats lay completely flat, level with the laid flat back seats. So one sheet of plywood does the job along with some sticks to acommodate with the front seat's back rest.. My plywood is only less than a half inch in thickness and I bet this would have done greatly too in your build, since your seperate pieces are only 24 inches wide and long. Would have made an even lighter package. These ways of making a sleeping platform are so much better and comfortable than the short ones in combination with the vertical back rests of the front seats 😁. I wonder if you'd be able to adjust the mount of the front seat a bit forward, if it would also lay more level flat with the back seats' back rests and make your build obsolete. This would lower the bed, leaving you with more headroom in the car.
Thanks for watching and for your helpful comments. Now that I have added a full size spare inside and raised the cargo floor I am going to build a new platform for two people again. I think something like you described would work well. Stay tuned.
2:12 "screwdriver without gloves".... 🤣🤣🤣
So grateful I found your video because I’m trying to build a platform in my Chevy spark with my front passenger seat exactly the way you have it and will be using this video this weekend as a reference! Thank you! 🙏🏼
Great plan. Definitely keeping this one in mind.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gloves can get caught up in blades and other tools. It's safer to go without when using power tools. Gloves also give a false sense of security and can cause you to misjudge how close your meaty bits are to spinning steel. Also, no glove will not protect you from spinning steel. But gloves can save you from splinters, bruises, and busted knuckles when using hand tools. Don't apologize and always assess your own risk in each individual situation. No two scenarios are identical. Now eye protection, on the other hand... Eye pro is never optional. You only have two and docs aren't great at replacing them yet. Take good care of them and they'll get you through until the end. Safety first, ho-oah.
You’re correct. I am gloveless moving forward.
I will say, I have had to travel for work before and I've stayed at campsites, and it really sucks to have to worry about your tent during the daytime or to load up stuff everyday,
Apologies for not responding. Thanks for watching and commenting. I agree with you 100%. Stay tuned for the next build.
@@creationsbycarson I've sometimes thought about putting the tire on my back hatch, but one I don't like how it blocks the window two I don't know if the hatch pneumatics are strong enough to hold it out and thirdly it gets splashed to hell in the winter time
@@RediTtora I think the weight of the spare tire would be too much for the rear hatch. However, I saw a unique build online and have contacted the company today to learn more. I am awaiting their response. Their spare tire mount is lower and off-centered. I will let you know in the comments as soon as I hear something.
@@creationsbycarson I think the solution would be if you wanted to have it on the outside would be to have stronger arms. They do make appropriate hatch arms usually for bigger hatches. It might require a touch more strength to close them but it would also make it a lot easier to open it
I am starting off as a residential electrician, and I really want to maximize my space in my trunk but my concern is if I fill up the back of my car with crap it'll be impossible to get to the spare tire and I don't want to throw it on the roof because then it's at the mercy of the weather
Check out the video I just posted about installing a Full-size spare in the cargo area.
Amazing 👏
Pronounced "Lou - On"
Thank you and thanks for watching too.
The thin sheet of luan is pronounced Lew-won. 😊
Gloves, gloves, gloves, keep taking the meds mate,
I don’t know why I put them on. Haha! Lots of people have made similar comments. I never really thought about it. But I don’t wear them anymore. I did make a video about it. Wearing Gloves Too Much Ep. 29 th-cam.com/video/efrgS1wC8fo/w-d-xo.html
"Non-ultimate option" :D This cracked me
7:58 it's okay man, you didn't have shorter screws and you didn't want to go by them. LOL
interesting ideas :) , gloves can get caught up in tools.
Yes, indeed. I have since eliminated the use of them for most occasions. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned for more builds.
Too many damn ads
That’s out of my control, I think, but good to know. I appreciate your comments and for watching.
It would’ve saved so much time, money, and been WAY more useful to remove the front seat even temporarily.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I love a good challenge and I enjoyed this build very much. I also understand your perspective. For me, being able to install this platform in seconds seems more efficient in the long run. In all my builds I like to keep the car as intact as possible as I use it as a people carrier 99% of the time. Thanks again for reaching out.
Thank you for the specs!
Thanks again for watching and commenting.
Can I get the specs to that wood board that you made?
Absolutely! I will take detailed measurements this afternoon and post a video next week. Thanks for watching and for reaching out!

Awesome big tree and the wildlife fantastic!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy that you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun. If you wait until November, the Whooping Cranes migrate to Texas' coastal plains and can be seen in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. It would be cooler too.
Wow, what a horrible thing to happen. Glad everything has worked out.
Thank you. Yes, it was quite a traumatic event. Happy it’s behind me now.
Beautiful scenery!!!!
Would you consider aChevy HHR? I’m planning a cross country trip from FL to CA! And I want to sleep in my car. I love all you videos and builds. Thank you.
Hello and thank you for watching and commenting. It’s nice to hear that you are enjoying the channel. I am excited to hear about your future roadtrip adventure from FL to CA in your Chevy HHR. I would love to take on that challenge. I will need some time to iron out logistics on temporarily acquiring that vehicle locally to be able to understand what kind of sleeping platform could work. I have some ideas and will get back with you. Could you please email me some some pictures of your vehicle inside and out? Please also explain what you plan on taking with you and how tall you are? Once you email me, I might have follow up questions. carcampingwithcarson@gmail.com
😂 That took a turn. And I LOL'd!
The brace over the front seat to lengthen the bed is ingenious.
😁 Thanks for watching and for commenting. I am happy it was helpful. Stay tuned for more builds. I will get back to it once it cools down here in Texas.
so excited to see you’re back ! used your videos to help build a platform in my subaru crosstrek and went car camping for the first time this summer
That’s fantastic! Please share photos or email: carcampingwithcarson@gmail.com
